purchasing through Steam

Post by Treachery »

Can You purchase X3TC through steam and install it so it is not part of Steam on your system? Does Steam automatically install X3TC in the Steam folder structure? I don't run any X3 games as part of Steam, I have always bought X3 in a store and installed from DVD. But I can't find X3TC anywhere so the only way to have it now is to buy it through steam, I just dont wanna do it if it is going to install it through steam. My X3 Reunion installation is in C:\Program Files\EGOSOFT. I kind of want X3TC to install the same way. Is this possible when you purchase through Steam. Basically I dont want Steam to be a part of the installation.

As with all titles bought through Steam, TC will require Steam to run.

if you can get a hard copy...get a hard copy. Steam is a nice alternative but nowhere close to a real copy

Steam is slow up the patch updates too. Don't suggest it. Go gamer has it... I should of bought it from them like I do most my games... But no I had to try steam out.

Plus X3TC is about 14 gigs of game... And takes a while to download.

depends on your outlook. I am hopelessly disorganised, so I buy on steam if I can so I know I'll never lose the game. On the other hand, it's quite often more expensive (the publishers control the price, whereas in shops they will discount it most of the time), and there's that extra layer of red tape that delays patches. So it's up to you.

My 2 cents: Steam sucks. Buck for buck, it's not worth it.

Steam works fine for me. I just wish it had more titles, most of the stuff on there is mediocre.

My 2 cents: Steam is great as a content management system and community system.

steam is a great backup because you never loose any of your games.

I don't like Steam either. I imported my game from Singapore, through an Ebay seller. With shipping it ended up being $40 US. It arrived in about a week.

I'm fine with digital distribution - I've bought games through GamersGate, Impulse, and several small scale developers. I just don't like having a different version from everyone else, where I have to run some crappy program in the background and go through them for patches.

And Steam has option - Work Offline
To enable it - you should
1. Login with your account
2. update your games
3. Choose option Go Offline from File menu
After that - Steam will not require any interntet connection.
That's all.

PS: I like steam ))

try to patch your game. you can easly wait a week or more to get the new patch, it was relased here but took more than a week to be available in steam for dl.

so yes it has SERIOUS issues.

STAY AWAY FROM STEAM. DO NOT BUY A GAME FROM STEAM EVER. incliding X3 TC

As you said in another thread:
"im not worried about the game not getting the patch , the problem is WHEN///////////// "

So patching - is only matter of time - and one week not long period to wait for )).

for your standards perhaps,

but for mine and for my money its a long time, considering that we all (steam users) should have the patch as soon as it is released.)

i have no reason to be happy as a customer, if i had that info about the: Steam patch policy i would never buy from then, so i feel like someone has lied to me.

you see? this is how paying customers with legal copies of games are taken care of. steam users should have the rights of having updates the same day it is released to the DVD users.

i think i have pretty much strong reasons to complain. its simply not fair.

and i cant still post in steam, i have to wait for a admin to "approve" my account. //////

Steam is very handy: because I can play my games from any place where internet present (moreover - I can use offline mode).
Patches - are not things that released too often, so one week earlier - one week later - doesn't matter after a year ))).
But with DVD version - I have to take all my discs (If i want to travel), with Steam - I haven't.

That's a huge factor for me as well.

In Summary:

Drawback: Patches take longer
Benefit: Discs ? I don't want no stinking discs! :)

Especially for a game like X that has such a longterm appeal, not having to worry about the disc all the time is a huge plus for me. The patch delay is unfortunate... but overall not having to use a disc still is more appealing to me.

I quote evrey single letter of this post: I'm in the exact same situation and it's unacceptable! I payed good money, more than I could have payed in a traditional store, and I have less, much less.

If you're ok playing with a bugged game good for you, not evreybody likes that tough! ;)
The patch 1.3 corrects tons of serious bugs and it improves performances as well to a certain extent.

Playing anytime anywhere Steam motto uh? Well, not to be rude, but anytime anywhere my ass! :D
There is the tages drm which requires the online activation for the game and it puts a limit of five activations (=different machines). It's a pretty high number, ok, but it's nowhere near the concept of anytime anywhere for obvious reasons. If you use all of the five activations for some reason you can email Egosoft begging for a new set of activations, but that's another story...
