Performance degradation as you progress.

Post by acrh2 »

The game started out at between 60 and 100fps.
Now, it's nearly a constant 20fps, regardless of graphics settings, or location (almost, it doesn't get any faster).
This is at 10 days of in-game time.

I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm not seeing significantly larger number of ships or stations yet (~70 sectors explored).

For people with slower cpus, it is going to be unplayable very soon. Imagine there's someone with a 2.4GHz C2Q, having to play at 10-15 fps all the time. And what about people with minimum requirements (2 GHz P4), which is about twice slower than this C2Q. They would get, at max, 10 fps.

This is very troubling. It feels as if there's a bug somewhere. Or maybe the game isn't optimized at all. X3:R ran very well on my old system, before I upgraded.
I feel like putting the game on hold until this is addressed.

Thoughts?

I've begun noticing the exact same thing. I've already had to scale down my graphical settings from 4xFSAA/8xAF to 2/4, and thinking about going 0/2.

I was wondering if it was just me, but apparently not. It's DEFINITELY slowing down. The whole game was smooth as silk at first. Now it's a slideshow in most combats.

I just checked the fps in 3 different sectors.
I got a constant 20 fps in 2, and 12-15 fps in Ore Belt. The fps numbers were the same regardless of settings:
1) 1280x960, 4xAA, 16xAF, all maximum quality settings.
2) 1024x768, 0xAA, 0xAF, all minimal quality settings.

Yep same here I've noticed the slowdown too.
It looks like somethings going on with the randum number genarators in the game.
And I'll bets the slow downs being created by races wars going on in other sectors.
Just have a look at fergra umbra post you'll see what I mean.

Ahhhh that explains why Sunday I swore blind (and posted here) I was getting 40-50 fps on average but yesterday when I checked my facts I found I was only getting 30-40 fps -I thought I had just made a mistake on Sunday.

On dear I made a post a little while ago saying I've only seen minor bugs, maybe I was a bit hasty :(

X3 had the same thing, although it probably affected me more than most then as I was still using an old Athlon XP. Now I have a fairly high end gaming PC, and the performance is definitely slowing. Hopefully Egosoft can improve it in a patch, but until then you have the obvious solution of lowering the graphics settings. Someone has also made a no civilians mod for TC which you can find in the modding forum, that gave me a decent performance boost in Reunion.

Wow im getting the same thing during combat. However i have noticed that at the start of the game some sectores(ore belt) were deserted and now the trade lanes are so full that ships are crashing into each other. so maybe the game is spawning too many ships and not removing them. I also noticed that Akeela's beacon fill up with non hostile pirates at a regular basis. these pirates outnumbered the local ships and just in general spammed the sector. it was like one of those patrol missions for one sector, but noone was fighting

Yeah, I have the same in Legend's End. There's about 30 non-hostile pirate ships just flying around.

Well going by the release state of Reunion we should be glad TC is playable at all.

Spawning unmanageable amounts of ships in missions?

Spawning GIANT Split invasion fleets?

Spawning so many traders the universe slows down?

Something tells me we have a problem with the amount of ships the engine is creating.

So far, I've been playing for a few days and I've not received any slowdowns. I use FRAPS to get an idea of what my FPS are in-game. I'm also not using a C2D processor, if that makes any difference. I'm using an FX-60.

I suppose they just need to add a line of code telling God that it can't have more than a set number of ships in play at any given time and to eliminate excess NPC ships accordingly to remain inside this cap.

The X3 engine has always gotten a little slower after a day or two of gameplay. Lots of stuff to track.

True, but

- It's not getting just a LITTLE slower. My FPS have gone from solid 60-100 (+) pretty much everywhere at mega graphical settings to slideshows in battles.

- Most of the things it needs to track, it tracks in a database format. A few thousand entries shouldn't make a jot of difference in performance. It doesn't in any commercial database.

I'm actually loathe to continue playing because it's getting worse every hour. I'm thinking of writing a script to just nuke every flying thing in the galaxy...

Guys, i dont think you get lower Frame rates cause of the graphic card, think that processor is having problems. Everything is calculated in real time, all the ships, fabs, missile & shots fired, everything in universe. The more you play, the more stuff is in it. And i dont really think egosoft can do anything about it with the current engine (ie, not supporting multi core processors).

In X3:R there were couple of scripts that helped a bit, like already mentioned, no civilian ships, and there was also some script that removed rocks. Im sure that most of reunion scripts will get TC versions of them, it shouldn't be a problem cause both games use the same engine.

edit:
nvm ;s

Why on earth did egosoft include civilian ships in TC!? All they do is hog docking clamps.
