Keyboard keys issue for X-BTF

Post by Fitzy Of Sydney »

Hey all. I haven't had it in my hands for 24 hours and I already have a tech issue.
I purchased X-Gold. It came with a manual which looked like it was written for X-Tension, even though the cover had X-Gold on it.

For some reason, I can not open the main menu, hit Shift + S to use insurance. Just wondering if there had ever been an issue with keyboards.

The version is the most updated for BTF.

If there have been no issues in the past, It may just mean that I need a new keyboard. It just seems strange that it only happens in the game play, and not when I am in the general game menu.

Also, between BTF and T, were there many more hotkeys added?
If so can some one point me in the direction for a hotkey list for BTF.

Any help / words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

Salvage Insurance in X-BTF only works when docked at a station. You cannot save at all in this game without it, and cannot save with or without it while in space.

I'm also not sure which "main menu" you are referring to. I don't remember there being one as such in X-BTF but I could be wrong.

The manual is indeed for XTension.

@CBJ he means the ship computer, which you access with ENTER iirc.
@Fitzy that doesn't exist in XBTF, only XT. Compared to XT, XBTF is rather basic, but it has oodles of atmosphere.

That is the frustrating thing through trial and error I will have to work this out, as the hotkeys in the manual seem to be for X-Tension.

Hotkeys for BTF anyone. I just looked at replacementdocs.com, and there is no listing for X-BTF

Well, there's no galaxy map, so don't bother looking for that one. There's no sector map as you know it either - you have to buy a navigation device (forgotten it's name) which puts an overlay of the sector up in front of you. It'll show stations on it, but not what they are until you've explored them.

Your cargobay opens the same way. Weapon selection is with the 1 and 2 keys. Missiles are M and L still, I believe. There's no jumpdrive, so don't look for that one either.

J for SETA, TAB for afterburners (and they're "proper" afterburners allowing you to exceed your maximum speed, but at the cost of shield strength) and then there's SHIFT-J which is SETA with afterburners on.

C for communications. D for the docking computer, once you've bought one from the Paranid.

T to target.

ALT to zoom with Vid. Enhancement Goggles (which have no maximum zoom setting! You can just keep zooming and zooming until your screen is filled with the engines of that ship on the other side of the sector).

Can't remember if "I" still brings up an information screen on the current target.

There's no property list, so no hotkey for that...

...in fact, I think I've covered almost all of them.

Thanks ESD.

If anyone has an addition, please go ahead.

ESD, so I can not save while I am in a station and save my insurance?
And, is there no ship computer?

No ship computer, except for a voice you'll hear when going through gates, targetting and the like.

Saving in XBTF is slightly different - you purchase an item of salvage insurance while docked at a station and then select a saveslot. That's your savegame. You cannot save in space.

Well it is a nine year old game!

XBTF had a neat story, but it also had more atmosphere than the others.

Been a while since I played that one myself, but I do remember pressing Shift + h (or k) brings up an info screen with some key assignments. HTH :)

Ok after a bit of research and some help from ESP, here is what I have worked out.

Communication 'C'
Pilot Info 'P'
Nav computer 'N'
Nav Command 'H'
Target 'T'
Info (Target) 'I'
SETA 'Shift - J'
Gun select ' 1,2,3'
Fire Gun 'Ctrl'
Next enemy Toggle 'Pg Up/Down'
Missile select 'M'
Missile Fire 'L'
Binocular zoom 'Alt'
MARS (autopilot) 'U'
Docking Computer 'D'
Ecliptic projector 'F5'
Camera view 'F2'
Rotate camera 'Numpad'
zoom camera '+/-'
Accelerate 'A'
Decelerate 'Z'
Speed to max 'TAB'
Speed to zero 'Backspace'
Open close cargo bay 'O'

There is one in the tutorial though that I did not work out. Shift cargo (F)
does this mean you open the cargo bay press F and the cargo is placed on board when you fly over it????

Suggestions?

No. F loads the cargobay and pressing O will open the bay doors and eject it.

MARS isn't quite autopilot - but it is... all it'll do is follow another ship's position.

M.A.R.S. (Motion analysis relay system... is it sad i still remember it?) i think was also useful as station autopilot, though it would not auto-dock you, just leave you at 1 km of the station.

Did you not get in game help with shift+h giving you a keyboard command help screen that was adaptive to the software that you had installed (so if you did not have best buys installed you did not get told 6 = best buys).

Okay I re-installed* x-btf and played through the trainer and did a little trading in Seizwell.
"h" is in game help on keyboard commands
"Shift+h" is in game tips
"n" is navigation map (or in my case navigation map is not installed)

A fun trip down memory lane, however I will stick to my current game of x2 for now.

*On my Vista laptop - plays really well with no problems as yet....

Wow.
Had a great 3 hours on it last night. Brilliant.

Found a new key.
Ship system info 'S'

An annoying thing I found was that if I attempt to collect something floating around, I press 'O' then 'F', and it doesn't work. It just ejects what I already have. Luckily it was only a few energy.

Any tips.

That's what I said earlier, pretty much.

Just press O and run the object over, just like now. It'll soon be transferred from the ejection/loading bay and put into the main cargo hold.

OK.
Seeing as the Superbox is out, and I too will be reloading BTF, I thought it prudent to redo this list of commands:

----------------------------------------------

Communication 'C'
Pilot Info 'P'
Nav computer 'N'
Nav Command 'H'
Target 'T'
Info (Target) 'I'
SETA 'Shift - J'
Gun select ' 1,2,3'
Fire Gun 'Ctrl'
Next enemy Toggle 'Pg Up/Down'
Missile select 'M'
Missile Fire 'L'
Binocular zoom 'Alt'
MARS (Motion Analysis Relay System) 'U'
Docking Computer 'D'
Ecliptic projector 'F5'
Camera view 'F2'
Rotate camera 'Numpad'
zoom camera '+/-'
Accelerate 'A'
Decelerate 'Z'
Speed to max 'TAB'
Speed to zero 'Backspace'
Load cargo ‘F’
Help ‘SHIFT – h’
Open/Close cargo bay 'O'
System info ‘S’
