How would you see the races name their capital ships ?
From this thread, we would like to get your ideas.
How would you see the different races name their capital ships ? (M1 & M2)
For me, Argons would have 'normal' names. In the story, you meet a Colossus which's name is "Renown", so it's less or more the same than today's navies.
But we have to find 2 types of names.
Borons are more complicated: what should we use ? X-universe sees' names ? Famous names like Mobydick, Dagoon ?
Splits would have aggresive names, like Sartorie suggested. Weapons names ?
Paranids: religious/Sacred names ?
And what about Teladis ? Sartorie suggested currencies' names, but it wouldn't fit in the X universe...
As for pirates, easy: good ol' pirates ships names !
Kha'ak: (gibberish ?)
Xenon: (use the ship id ? or maybe binary?)
So, what are your ideas ? What would you like to see ?

I see Split ships as being named after various medieval weapons... SFN (Split Family Navy) Partisan, Battle Axe, Broadsword, War Scythe, Halberd, etc.

More ideas / suggestions ?

guess seeing some of the argon ship names alrleady in game names like dauntless, enduring, bravery and such seems to fit the theme(but the names doesnt fit themselves actually, most of the time I see argon sips run away from or ignore kha'ak in their sectors ;s)
for the boron, plankton, runner, flees swiftly, cuddlywuddly and such?

The Boron: Revenge is a Dish Best Served Wet!
The Split: Revenger is a Dish Best Served With Tarter Sauce!
...so they're a little long.
For the Paranid maybe something like Wreakin' Deacon or Altar Boy of Doom.
Actually, for the Paranid anything with an appropriately ominous adjective and the word Crusader or Inquisitor would probably be good.

there's a big flaw in that whole discussion.
in the context of the game, who would be naming the ships?
Argon aka humans?
so far it looks like, every name that we see in the game would be the kind of name that Argon had came up for that specific ship. Thus the real names of the ships are still unknown to us.
similar to Americans/British calling a russian bomber a 'Bear', while that's not its real name.
so on that note, every race would call a ship in their own language.
Xenon would either not name a ship, name it in code, or carry over old and forgotten Terraformer fleet names
Khaak would name their ships in their language, if they feel like naming.

The name of the first ship that you encounter in the X games was a Teladi destroyer called the Pheonix.Dantrithor wrote:Teladi... more like economic things. Not just currency names!
Yes I know that the Class name as well, but it could have been the first of its class. In any case thats proof of the kind of things Teladi call their ships.

Although the problem could be handwaved away by saying that ship names are translated, just as conversations with the other races are.fiksal wrote:so far it looks like, every name that we see in the game would be the kind of name that Argon had came up for that specific ship. a bit of a sloppy translation then, dont you think, if the translated names ended up being Earth animals and Gods.ephemeron wrote:Although the problem could be handwaved away by saying that ship names are translated, just as conversations with the other races are.fiksal wrote:so far it looks like, every name that we see in the game would be the kind of name that Argon had came up for that specific ship. Just babbling, but maybe to put words "known as" in front of the non - Argon ships?
So - if you have Split Pheonix - it's description for Argons would be: "Known as Pheonix", and when you're in the Split station, you see their real (weird and connected to money) names too?
p.s. "known as" is easy to put as K.A.

Okay, are we talking ship names or ship class names?fiksal wrote:a bit of a sloppy translation then, dont you think, if the translated names ended up being Earth animals and Gods.ephemeron wrote:Although the problem could be handwaved away by saying that ship names are translated, just as conversations with the other races are.fiksal wrote:so far it looks like, every name that we see in the game would be the kind of name that Argon had came up for that specific ship. To me, it seems the ship class names (e.i. Split Mamba, Teladi Falcon) are assigned by Argon Naval Intelligence...

The problem is, except in a few isolated instances, there are no specific names for NPC ships. That's too bad because it would certainly add to the atmosphere of the game.
Here's a few more names:
Paranid:
Xaar's Wrath
Righteous Indignation
Teladi:
Market Force
Venture Capital
Boron:
Cloud Swimmer
Will of Atreus
Split:
Blood Oath
Njy's Vengeance
Death or Honor

Or it translated by the computer that way: the comp' find a name that can't be translated (i.e name of a local bird). It will translate it with a word that can be understood and recognized by its owner.
No ?

Let's gather what we proposed for now:
Paranid:
- Xaar's Wrath
- Righteous Indignation
- Saint Preacher
- Beacon of Light
- Pious Knight
- Lightbringer
- Holy words
Teladi:
- Market Force
- Venture Capital
Boron:
- Cloud Swimmer
- Will of Atreus
Split:
- Blood Oath
- Njy's Vengeance
- medieval weapons names ?

No ?![]()

usually we tend to pronounce names from other languages as is, or as close as we can do within our own language.
though some maps for whatever reason 'slightly' adjust city and country names
ex: Germany, Moscow
like a bastard sword?- medieval weapons names ?

The split are very family-centric, based on their sector and rank names.
Or has the Argon translation service assumed they are for that purpose?
Also, their ship design points to 'Live fast, die young'
I would assume that the ship would have the Family Name and then some Split name for something fast and powerful.
The assumed ship names are not bad examples (not sure about Elephant) of this last bit this but unless they have Earth animals, meaningless.
