The baseless rumor that I'm shamelessly perpatrating is that they're working on an FPS Halo clone for the XBox 360, called X: Box.

maybe they are working on an x-tension for X3? rather then just patches...

or maybe they are not sure what to work on and are glad this has come up so they can take ideas and use them?

though i cannot tell what they have in X3 really since i have not played it, but if they don't have space ship races then maybe they should add that? (different class ship races?)

Most of us remember the undeserved flak egosofties got prior to the launch of x3 i.e. "You said XYZ was going to be in the game and it wasnt, Im going to pout" and "You said it was going to be out by now and its not, Im going to act like you guys owe me big".

I admit as soon as any future developement anouncement is made, the regular question will change from "what you doing" to "when will it be ready" but at least speculation will be a bit more interesting.

Ok the mods dont know, the devs cant say, and if anybody is tired of reading these posts then the advice is dont read them, but....BUT......BIGGER BUT.....

To be able to answer "X online is the next project or there is another single player foray in the works" (maybe with the odd bit of teaser info as well) has to be better for all concerned.

I can understand the reluctance to repeat the pre X3 hub-ub but there has to be a better way than just saying nothing.

While the new patch and MD are only a month old there has been nothing realy new in the game for the player since Bala Gi. Nothing even to speculate on.
Please dont take what I have said as ungreatfull but its been a year since any missions or serious kit has been introduced and if egosoft are not going to make another Bala Gi type mission (once a year would be nice) then maybe its not unreasonable to be expected that they are a little more forthcoming with there plans.

You gave some of the reasons why early announcements aren't made by games companies in general at the start of your post, but you missed out the biggie. Don't forget that developers work with publishers, and amongst the other things they do it's the publishers who generally do the marketing, so they like to be in control of what information is released and when. That in turn means that they like to know what is happening, when it is happening, and have all the necessary paperwork signed and sealed before anything gets said. Obviously that means that sometimes it takes longer than some people would like it to to get information out, but it's often unavoidable, and I'm afraid that saying things like it's "not unreasonable to expect..." doesn't change that.
