Static noise?

Post by aronlsearle »

Im having an issue with sound. What is happening is that when alot of sounds are playing (engine noise, music, weopons), its starts cackling static out the speakers.

As far as i know it only happens with X3, and only since i upgraded (new mem, processor, grx card, but the same sound card)?

Any ideas?

Without a DXDiag report it's hard to tell. The fact that it happened after an upgrade suggests a hardware or driver issue, but the fact that it only happens in X3 suggests it might be a codec problem. Try checking for updated motherboard and sound drivers, and reinstalling WMP 10 or 11. If that doesn't help then you could also try MadBoris' DShow tool at the top of the forum. Failing that, post a DXDiag report so that people have some chance of spotting any potential problems.

@ aronlsearle

I found the following quote on another forum concerning another game sometime ago. I have highlighted a part of it that CAN cause the problem you are describing. It would be worth checking this IMO.

"Hey there , im the other guy with the same problem and luky for you i found the solution, as soon as u said u have an asus bord i knew it, ....... uses .ogg sound format and for some wired reason our c-media 3D audio driver / card dosent handle it very well, all u gotta do is

1- goto "control pannel"
2- click on "sound, speach and audio divices"
3- then "audio divices"
4- goto speaker settings "advanced"
5- click on "performance" tab
6- and where it has "hardware aceleration" set to "none"

you can skip all that by right clicking on ur C-Media system try icon and goto "media properties" and so on.

now u may think that this has got nothin to do with it sound in relation to cloak, but some reason it does, i have 2 games that use .ogg sound files and on both of them i have to disable hardware acceleration or crash.

lukily this is not a problem caused by ...... but im abit dissapointed that i found the solution and not ..... teqnical support group, do they even have a support group ?, anyway, this solution only applies to asus boards "i think", if not please post and let us know.

note: this does not solve other crash issues such as titan crashes and so on. also remember to re-enable hardware aceleration for other games or u may encounter problems such as delayed sound or static/scratching issues"

I have removed references to the other game also. Don't want to get into trouble.

On another note. I have noticed that since I installed Media Player 11 I am getting strange enging sounds, they are a bit fluttery if I can use that description. By turning down Hardware Acceleration you can eliminate this problem. The downside of this is that I seem to get an increase (slightly) in lagg. So I live with the fluttery engin noise.

Might be useful.

Cheers
