Vista 64 + X3 woes

Hi I've moved over to a new PC based on Vista 64 Ultimate and having reinstalled X3, patched to latest version 2.0.0.2 I get a partially repetative freeze which is driving me nuts.

Essentially one in roughly six gates I fly through causes the game to freeze and not continue into the new sector. It doesn't seem to matter which sector I am going to or from, and when I restart X3 and reload the last saved game I can successfuly pass through the same gate which saw the last freeze.

The game doesn't CTD it just stays on the black screen after entering the gate. I can use task manager to force X3 to close and restart so there are no errors to go on.

I do use the latest bonus scripts pack and XTM v7.0a mod, I will test later today if the vanilla game has the same fault.

Any assistance or advice greatly appreciated.

I have read other posts in this forum about Vista problems non seem relevent in my case.

Hi,

Well as far as I can see it is supposed to be compatible with the Bia Gia missions but there is still an outstanding bug report by a few players regarding ctd's.

So uninstall the mod and try without it to see if that fixes the problem.


If it does report it in the scripts and modding forum or in the thread on the X Universe forum.

Make sure your Xtended .7 download wasn't corrupted. Their main dl site was getting hammered the first few days the mod was released and the download was getting corrupted near the end for some people. Also, if you are using Cycrow's script installer, there is a known issue where you will need to re-install the Xtended script pack periodically as the Script installer is currently deleting some needed Xtended files.

Edit: Also, some of the XTM team were recommending not installing the bonus pack or any other scripts at this time as they are still testing for compatibility.

I've not updated the Nvidia drivers further as the release notes point to changes with SLI only which doesn't effect my setup.

XTM corruption I hopefully avoided as I had to download it 3 times to get a file which passed the CRC check but I know what u mean its a possibilitiy.

I have got a bit closer to the source of the problem, I was starting X3 from Cycrow's script installer (the Run X3 button). When I simply start X3 from the normal shortcut I didn't get the problem and still get all the XTM models.

The question is..... are the XTM scripts running when I start X3 in this way?

The models are still there, and it looks ok... and its playable for 2hours+ with no freeze 8)

BigBANGtheory, you are my hero. I've had the same problem in the last week (since I have my new computer and I've finally been able to play with proper framerates). I'm running X3 on Vista x86 without XTM, but with several of Cycrows extension and using his plugin manager. And I've had exactly the same problem. I've tried disabling different mods, all of them eventually but I couldn't figure it out. Ran diagnostics, looked for newer drivers (there weren't any, as my computer is a week old :) ) and tried playing with various graphical settings.

Just running X3 directly, and not from the plugin manager fixed it. I must say:

my computer has just blown up!
i must buy another!

so will a vista ultimate, with a quad core 64 bit cpu work with an unmodded fully patched X game?

There are a number of people using Vista Ultimate and there's no reason why quad core should cause any problems. I'd recommend running 32-bit Vista though since, as with 64-bit XP, the 64-bit drivers are still a bit flakey.

Oh, and while you're at it could you ship me one of those PCs? ;)

well normally i only get a new main comp when a new X requires it!
But since my old lad just blew up on me, i might as well get one ready to work on the next few generations of X :-)
