X3 - mmorpg or similar
Is there any chance that community or real creators produce something like massive multiplayer game out of X3, something like EVE online ???
I played EVE after completing X2 and building big economy, feeling just is not the same
I believe that this project would bring a lot of money and huge number of players if ever completed
(*** sory for my english, Im not a native ***)

Although this has been posted numerous times before.....
Xonline is currently in the works (sort of)
I think they should come out with X4 with multiplayer support first.
Let them deal with game balance (lack of seta and death penelties and the like) and, here is the big one, perfomance.
Do no get me wrong, I love X3 to death, but the engine is well, not very optimized. Now, take all those scrips/processes/AI thats bogging your computer down and throw in network code, latency, and other people with high pings.
X4 with multiplayer support first, let them get some multiplayer coding experience on a small scale before going MMPORG.
Freelancer has servers that can support up to 64 players. If Egosoft can do half of that I will one of the first on the sign up list for when they MMORPG.

ok, didn´t know
but one sector could be like one room/server and you could just fly from one to another and this would limit player count (all stations/ships in sectors you arn´t in would be ran by server with your instructions)
and sta - well you colud turn some special thrusters on, but they would spend some energy or similar . . .
i but one sector one server would have dramatic effect on performance
em i right ?
anyway, didn´t know that it is allready in progres and all

I don't see X3 as a successful MMORPG game, at least not one based on monthly subscription fees. For one thing, it's a little too similar in concept to Eve Online, with no walkaround avatars (can't get out of your ship).
If Egosoft had the financial resources and time to create walkaround 3D avatars and interior models... for example, bars on stations you could walk into and interact with other players, or crews that could interact at different duties on a capital ship together... then I think they'd have something competitive. But obviously that would be a huge amount of new coding and testing. Probably not going to happen.
Another potential issue is that the X games have been open to modification, so the user base can make scripts to fix problems, or build in new content (to a limited extent). That gets Egosof off the hook on several levels, and they won't be able to do that with a MMORPG. This type of game has to be a closed, un-hackable system, so people are all on a level playing field.
They'd have to please everyone with one fixed design, at a single difficulty level, with a low enough level of bugs to keep people paying that monthyl fee. That's a tall order.

It could be good, but would be crazy insane to program. I imagine it would take a long time, and a lot of money.
I kind of like that in X3 I am ultimatelly the only real person there, though I wouldn't mind small scale multi-player, over a lan.

Yeah, it's inevitble. Someone will do it, but it probably won't be either of these companies (Egosoft or whoever is behind Eve).TaoZero5 wrote:I think it's bound to happen one day - eve will go totally 3d - or X will go ww webby. Enough people in the world want to fly in space.
Maybe our children's children will see it.

The reason why Blizzard is the current 800 lb. Gorilla of the MMORPG market, is that they understand social gaming. You'll never see a fantastically successful space-based MMORPG until people can walk around and compare how tricked-out their spacesuits are, and flirt with each other, or challenge each other to "Step outside" in their ships for a space combat duel. You can't do that in a dry environment where you're essentially a disembodied brain in a spaceship.

i would say yes to it. some people on here were sayin X3 is open to scripts and such, but this NEW game could have that taken out. i played star wars galaxies for some time and i was told that when that game first came out it was basic and very little to it. but they added things in every few days or so and thing got better and more interesting.
if egosoft were to create a game like this then people would be able to see things added and keep the people comin, if they made a big show about releasing it that would bring the custom, and the game could be endless. story line tagged on for to to complete in your own time. the BBS missions could be somebody at a reception desk or at a bar or some1 working for a factory who is sick of being under paid.
there is also the pirate side to things. (i tried playing as a pirate and found it more trouble then its worth) with an MMOG you could become more of a pirate and take that route if u so wish.
if you tried to place a station in a sector with too many stations in already (would have to have a limit) then you might get a message from border control or something.
also after being with the game for X amount of months you get given a free ship, or free station. maybe they could make a housing complex. u have your own home which u can place objects in to look how ever u want. in the housing complex there could be a bar. somewhere to chat to other online ppl find out new info from the people who have played missions or quests.
guild, maybe you could join the argon police force? or smuggling crew, or maybe be a peacefull gooner? each with there own unique abilitys and rewards?
can you tell i been wishing for this for a long time? if theres any help needed for such a game send em to me

X like EVE - never
I brought it up only as a rough concept.
X like X only online, wallkable stations could be good
Pirating would be definitely fun. And bounty hunters, races, or simply building an economy, mining, trading.
Programers could create some new evil races every now and then or old one atacking so entire sectors should unite to destroy them (something like dragons in fantasy mmorpgs)

I didn't answer the poll because the only no option is that nobody would play it. I believe it would be played, but i would still say no there shouldn't be an x-online without a large moderater presence as my experience with mmorpg is that within a week you have 14000 l33t speaking morons whose only job (if you could call it that) is to annoy players just out to have some fun.
Until the online gaming community grows up a bit I'll stick with the single player game.

Could the parents of the little Argon girl, Suzie, please claim her sealed jar of remains?

There huge ammount of aspects to consider. First off all, graphics. People can enjoy the x-series if they buy the game that fits with their computer. X3 is made for newer computers, where X2 can be played on somewhat older computers. With an online version, there has to be made a choice. With an online game you want many people playing, so the graphics will be tuned down.
Then there is developing costs and time. A single player game is relative easy to make compaired to an online version. Things to consider are anti-cheating, stable, much content, low bandwith, balancing...
And there is the risc. Egosoft does exist a couple of years now. They could get bankrupt if the game does not attract the number of people needed to keep the game running. Who would take such a risc if the current line of games will make enough profit?

Im guessing you have never ran a freelancer server....kilaan wrote:

they can hold 128 players.. though by saying 64 you are right in one area there. most servers only host 64 players due to bandwith costs.

There are ways to deal with that problem, like World of Warcraft's different server types. They have PvP (player vs. player, everyone flagged all the time), PvE (player vs. environment, with optional PvP flagging), and RP (same as PvE + role playing) servers. This tends to steer the L337!!! kiddies to the PvP servers, and there is generally a more mature community on the RP servers. It also means you can choose a server type where you can't get ganked unfairly, if you don't want to deal with it.Dgn Master wrote:I didn't answer the poll because the only no option is that nobody would play it. I haven't played Eve, but I think it's a single gameworld, right? With that concept, you can't avoid the L337!!! kiddies because everyone's playing under the same rule set. Of course, to make the WoW system work, you have to be assured of a fairly large player population, to justify the different server types and additional overhead.
