Large increase in frame rate - nvidia

Post by alfmouse »

I've been struggling to get playable frame rates since I got X3, I've optimised, tweaked and tuned my system to death over the past week or so, and nothing has really helped.

Finally something has made a real difference... 81.89 forceware drivers. It's actually perfectly playable now. Can't remember the last time a nvidia driver update improved things as much as this. Apparently frame rates in COD2 are also massively improved.

Anyway, I got them from here...

btw I'm running a 6800GT. Hope this helps some of you.

Thanks for the tip i also have a 6800gt.
A note tho, the improved frame rates are relative using these techniques. Try turning off the hud, you`ll still get x2 fps than having the hud on. There is no miracle trick, so just wait for a couple more days. :D

Glad you got some extra fps from those drivers, just bear in mind that they are the not official nVidia Forceware drivers. The "(inoffiziell)" means inofficial. Just so you know. ;)

It'd be nice to get more fps though. My system, which is A64 2.8GHz, 2G of ram, 2 x 7800gtx SLI) gets only 25-35 fps at 1280x960 with everything else on high, and the SLI isn't really being utilized according to the forceware drivers and FRAPS.

Just tried them out with my 6800 GT, they did seem to give a benefit 8) . Now if they can just get the game to run as smooth with HUD as it does without I would consider it playable...

Did it actually make any difference from 81.85? or were you using some older drivers?

Post by kurush »

I just upgraded to the most recent driver for my eVGA e-GeForce 6600 and I am wondering if it will help to get the version you mention. I am getting about 13-25 FPS when flying and 3-5 in SETA. With HUD off the frame rate doubles.

Can you get these drivers for the laptop Geforce Go 6800?

Before trying these I'd tried every version I could get my hands on, and none had really improved things much. Can't remember 100% if I'd tried 81.85, but most likely did. But give these a go, what's the worst that can happen :-)

Haven't found any other version of 81.89 other than these, they may well work with the Geforce Go anyway. The readme doesn't list the 6800 at all, but they work like a charm with my 6800GT. As they're unofficial beta drivers, often the readme is not correct.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll try these drivers when I get home...

Your and BugMeisters posts have encouraged me...

But in case something goes wrong, being a beta driver, how are you best rolling back?

Microsoft has a guide here using one method, but maybe it's just as good to uninstall, use a driver cleaner, and install the older one again, if you'd wish to do that.

Maybe it'll be like when I upgraded my drivers for Doom 3... Saw a tremendous improvement of like 15 fps. lol

I'm going to give these babies a go over the weekend.

I can play the game, but the framerates are not brilliant.

Hopefully these will help until 1.3 comes out (if indeed 1.3 solves the HUD issue).

Yeah assuming that things went horribly wrong, that MS guide would most likely be fine, or you could use system restore to roll it back. Otherwise uninstalling and then reinstalling the old one should also work fine.

I saw a poster with A64 and 6800GT I have the Agp 256MB and A643000 and have not encountered any stutter, even with the HUD on. Your system should easily cope with X3. My MB and Memory are very cheapy low tech. X3 seems to either work like a dream or stink....

Have tried them. Switching from 81.87 to 81.89 makes no difference on my system.

I have a Geforce 5500FX and the game is definitly playable with all the features turned down to the lowest setting. I would still like to go from about 20 fps to 30 fps though .. I'll give these drivers a shot.. funny thing. I upgraded from Nvidia 77.77 to the newest driver set and now I get corrupted saved games and CTD. I am going to go back to 77.77 if these unofficial drivers do not help.

How do you run benchmarks? My benchmark option box is greyed out at startup....
