Another thing that came up in my mind is I wonder if you have the ability to conquer a sector and/or other races have the ability to conquer a sector... so that the borders shift dynamically.

It'd be nice to see more natural phenomena in the universe. As is, most sectors are just different shades of clouds, which don't mean anything. Perhaps a broken gate was built on a miniature wormhole, still allowing small ships to travel? Perhaps a gate simply sends you a couple hundred KM down the road? Perhaps a gate sends you to a black hole, or the shadow of a moon nearly inside a star's corona? Maybe a storm requires carriers and heavy shields to cross. Or an ancient warzone is filled with roving mines. There's a lot that can be done to add great places or natural disasters to the universe.
A spaceship graveyard, full of derelict hulks, large and small, with scavengers lurking around. I so want to see that in a game.
Friendly fire is not so friendly.

To be honest, I'd be more surprised if there isn't some sort of dynamic element to the politics of the universe. It was one of the big criticisms of the X3 (and older) games. Think it'll be in there :)
Yes yes yes! If a good political system is in place, I could care less of the other three items I listed in my previous post.

Found an interesting article (in Russian) about XR

It says mostly what is already known but one point is interesting: apparently Bernd told them in an interview that the game would have new physics. So huge capital ships will have some sort of gravity field that'll pull you in and if you get close enough you will drag along.

Since the direction seems to be moving towards downloadable games, I wonder if this game will only be available through steam? What would be the incentive to create a physical product when you can command the same price for a pdf and a download?

It better not be downloadable only, or it won't be on my computer. My home connection is a very slow DSL and it would literally take days to download something the size of TC, let alone a new game that's likely even bigger. :roll:

And don't discount the value of a boxed version, with a hardcopy manual. Not to mention a nice T-shirt, like the one I got with the special edition of Reunion from Enlight. :D

Yeah I hope that they will offer it on a nice dvd with a nice box like the X2/X3TC box. With a nice manual/poster/map included.

Then it would be being published by Steam, not Deepsilver :p

I would be gobsmacked if it wasn't available from Steam on release day. But it'll also be available from Egosoft for pre-order, and Play.com. And Amazon...

Interesting. They mentioned that the only way of travel is the direct one (perhaps not unlike the sandbox games a-la bethesda's) — you just fly in the seamless space until you find something and then you can fast travel to the once discovered location. This brings up a conclusion that the game will be set in the very limited portion of space, perhaps one solar system? But then again they mentioned that "the number of available sectors will decrease" so go figure...

One massive solar system would be really nice as like you said if you go long enough and find something a fast travel point unlocks or somit that would be really cool for exploration tho maybe boring depends how they set the speed of ships as if their slow as hell like previous games then exploring this way will be rather poor.

That would definitely give jump beacons a much better role in the game.

I hope it's like Morrowind then Oblivion then. Since if it's like Oblivion there would be really little difference to the current system. It sounds like we have something like a transportation hub.

wouldn't the tradelane system resemble the gate ways that freelancer used? Fast travel between A and B and then when you reach a destination explore that part of space?

If there will be a new political system, i hope, that there will be blockades to prevent a system from trading.

You could make a lot of credits by breaking trough such a blocked and it would be challenging to fly trough enemy fire from lets say 20 M2 and being followed by some fighters trying to stop you.

10 things I would like to see in Rebirth...

Here's just a list of thing that would make the game more fun and fresh. I hope at least some of these are already implemented...

1) Better path-finding and better AI collision avoidance

2) Exploration into truly unknown sectors/areas that are not just empty lifeless areas with a few rocks, perhaps dangerous environments (mine fields, unstable gasses, super heated areas/radiation, hostile aliens) with unique rewards and chances to escape pursuing enemies into these areas.

3) Trade lanes to be used to navigate sectors rather than SETA, and the ability to create your own lanes to your own areas in space.

4) Waypoint system to plot navigation to stations or space to avoid hostiles, perhaps even an automated learning AI to flee from enemies and find an alternative route.

5) Purchase areas of space and police/mercenaries at a price.

6) Mineable extremely rare metals and mining stations that mine areas of space you own with small ships which do not deplete and are totally autonomous.

7) Unique wares from certain core sectors (planets) that cannot be created on stations for long distance risky trading to other races.

8) Counter measures for attacking ships (EMP, damageable engines/weapon/targeting systems to slow enemies).

9) Repair crew/droids to repair damaged systems using spare parts or salvage from other destroyed/disabled ships while on the move or in battle.

10) More upgrades to ships.
