Same problem here. X3 used to have a splash screen where you could tell it what input devices you are using - can't find anything like that in X4. Also, don't know where it is getting "left" and "right" it is calling the POV hat on my G13 (which is on the left side of my keyboard) the right joystick and Extreme 3D pro my left joystick and the twist is calling right trigger. Is there some setting menu that can change all this that I can't find? I'm lost!

Saitek CyborgX and indeed general joystic support problems.
OK in a nutshell:
The game gets controller and joystic recognition mixed up. More precicely it thinks my joystick is a controller.
Just one example, if i pull back on the stick: guns fire. try to bank left, menus pop up etc.
can we please have seperate menus for controllers and joystics. Not 'Mouse' and 'Controller/Joystick' menu as it is now.
i just cant play this game with mouse and i hate controllers because I dont have a console and I bought a controller for this game and what a convoluted mess thats is.
My current Joystick is a Saitek Cyborg X.

Agreed. Until it is sorted, I managed a work around with my Saitek V.1 stick - by downloading the driver and Profile Editor (from the Saitek/MadCatz website).
Enter a profile with the fire buttons to replicate the keyboard controls. Same for the throttle (and invert it). Select the profile from the tray at the bottom of the screen. Then in X Rebirth you will need to invert the pitch of the stick. For personal preference I also remove the auto-centering used on rolling.
I hope it helps.

I am also having similar issues with my Extreme 3D Pro. As you mentioned above, the axis are not registering properly when trying to bind them in settings. The roll axis identifies as a trigger and several buttons don't register at all - most specifically the primary triggers 1 and 2. The throttle works but is being recognized as a trigger.
For now I have had to ditch the joystick and am just using KB/M... My least favorite flight controls =\

Insert something witty here, some day...

Add me to the list.
In my case I use a simple X,Y and thurst axis with 3 buttons. "usb thrustmaster at 15€ in amazon".
The main problem is that mouse pointer can't stay on while the joystick is connected so I can't dock, and looking while you walk in ship or stations only happens when you briefly see mouse pointer hit the edge of the screen.
Disconnecting the joystick inmediatly fixes the issue.
Joystick is detected and works right with any other game (including previous X games and Linux).
Trying to use the joystick is a nightmare.

Joystick Deadzone, and other bindings.
It feels that the game was really not developed for using a Joystick, nevertheless it can be fixed getting rid of some configurations such as autoroll and inverting some axes, there are two things that I was not able to solve:
1.- Huge Deadzone, As I saw (unless I'm missing something) there is only sensivity control for the Joystick, but the Deadzone is HUGE. I bought a X52 with hall effect sensors, with a fancy centering system not for having a 1/3 of deadzone. At least, is there a registry variable or something else to put the deadzone to 0? (the controller already has a good software for configuring it if necessary).
2.- Not all bindings available. It looks that some bindings are not available, targeting, actions, also that annoying controller like menu is going to kill me, you press a button then you have to move the stick to select an action, then you release the button and voilá you turn / roll the ship. Why not keeping the possibility of having a key and the POV.
I'm still trying to figure out things, I hope someone post some tricks at least to afford them.
Thanks.

Exactly same issue here, X52. But also I have a 360 controller and the game cannot bind all of its keys. Additionally I cant bind controls to the mouse either. but those are merely asides. the real problem is I cant properly use my X52, as stated, its axis are not being recognized correctly.SilverCommand wrote:Same problems with the Saitex x52.

+1 on point number 2, i would also like the ability to bind my hats so i can strafe... had to enable aim assist because i was getting my ass kicked without the ability to strafe. and the menu system is very frustrating with the joystick.
This game was not designed with joystick support in mind, but a damn console controller.

Same here on Saitek Evo Pro; of course by this stage I think we can safely say the devs never tested the so-called "joystick" interface with anything but an xbox controller >.<
Also, POV-hat doesn't seem to let you look around the cockpit; possibly not a bug, but it'd be weird if they removed that feature from X:Rebirth with it's highly detailed cockpit, when it's been a staple feature of every previous game

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro
Configuring controls not working as intended and buttons can not be assinged. very bad for a space sim tbh ... First day and joysticks won't work. I hope we get a fix soon, otherwise i'm gone demand a refund. I don't buy space / flight games to play them with keyb/mouse or controlers.

[Fixed] Joystick still putting in commands while unplugged...
=====
Edit:
Not sure if this will work for those others who have this problem.
Basically I figured out it was my TrackIR 5 that as somehow telling the game to walk forward. If you have trackIR maybe try unplugging that.
If you don't have TrackIR, then it could very possibly be another plugged in device that the game thinks is telling it to move. I suggest individually unplugging/plugging everything and seeing if one of the devices plugged up is commanding your game to move.
I admit it's not really a *fix*, but who would have thought TrackIR was the cause of my game to be moving on it's on? So I figure the same could be said for some other randomly plugged in device.
=====
Like many people, I've had horrible trouble with the joystick controls. Between unbindable actions and what-not, I just wanted to say forget it. So I completely unplugged my joystick, throttle, and pedals.
However, when I'm in the game, it continues to act as if my joystick is plugged in. Making my guy continuously walk forward or my ship to continue to spin around.
I've tried to look for a way to unbind the joystick buttons in controls, but there isn't one.
How is my game accepting a joystick input command when it's not even plugged in?!
