NOTE: This is only for when you are trying to use ONE (1) mod. Any more than one and you'll have to do the 'fake patch' method which can be found HERE.
Also this is for the standard X3TC CD install, I haven't looked in to the Steam method as yet (though when I do, I'll add how to choose the mod to this post if I figure it out).
Until recently, I had no idea how to choose a mod from the mod package option. I've also witnessed a lot of other people asking how to do it and why their mods weren't working, and I couldn't find a tutorial or explanation on how to do it. So here it is.
Additional Note: It should be pointed out that the 'mods' folder does not exist on a clean install. You simply need to create a new folder in the main directory and name it 'mods'.
Step 1: 'Run' the X3TC Launcher, by defaut it would be via your Start Menu or Desktop Shortcut.

Step 2: You should see something like this --

Click on the "Select Mod Package" option, as highlighted below

Step 3: You should see a list with available mods (I'm using the XTra Ship/Station Pack as an Example here). Highlight the one you wish to run (NOTE: If there is more than one name here that you wish to run then you will have to go through the 'Fake Patch Install' Method, which is here)

Click on "OK", as highlighted below

Step 4: Run your game

You only have to Select the Mod Package ONCE, unless you wish to change the mod you want to play.
Now enjoy playing with your newly installed mod.
Feedback/Suggestions/Comments Appreciated

nice tutorial
Don't forget that the "mod" folder isn't created by default.
First time, you wanna play a mod on a clean vanilla install, You have to create the mod-folder by Yourself.
I saw several people around here, who don't know about this, so it would be a good idea to mention this in such a "beginners" tutorial
Cheers,
Mike

Unless of course the Mod resides in a compression file which has folders targetted (ie .zip, .rar etc) whereby when extracted to the root directory they automatically move to or create the folder needed to extract in to.Mike.Galaxy wrote:nice tutorial

Osnap, I just noticed the Tutorial and Resources sticky topic. One of the topics linked in that has a step to step guide in it... how did I miss that one.

Most mods should contain the creation of the mods folder within the unpacking process.
Zips for example, should contain the folder structure so folders get created when the zip is unzipped.
Rars often dont though.
If the mod doesnt automatically create its needed folders and put everything in the correct place as part of the unpack, then complain to the mod author and ask for it to be done better.
So for all the better mods, unpacking them will create the mod folder and so the select mods button will be available without doing anything. Select mod, and play.
