X3:TC 3.0 Dead-is-dead game
Hi,
I originally purchased the DVD copy of this game, and now I decided to test the Steam version and "Dead-is-Dead" game.
I've installed the game through steam, but when I try to start a DiD game, it is greyed out and it says it cannot connect to STEAM, even though steam is on (not offline mode). Am I missing something, or do I need to perform some additional actions to enable DiD?

i really like the DiD mode, and i dont really have anything against the boron, but i didnt really feel like playing one, so i modded a couple of the other game starts to save a DiD...
There is one thing i dont like about DiD.. X3, while is a fantastic game.. is not the most stable thing, especially when mods get involved. So i am wondering if there is a way to address DiD game saves being lost due to a game crash...

u can also buy salvage insurance although im not sure what u would do with it, u should be allowed to save it using that insurance and so if u die, at least if uve mustered up a lot of stuff u can still retain it, albeit without gettin the achievements

From what i have seen Dead is Dead has a reference file that is synced up with steam. So while there is a file required to load it up on your computer, it is merely a reference file that is probably check against steam.
It still bothers me that a simple game crash can kill your character in Game... Almost like the matrix movie, kinda ironic reference there, as the movie's creators are of German decent and X is created in Germany.

No longer a tech support issue so let's move to the main forum.

The nice thing about DiD mode is that when you first start out in your game, things can kill you quite easily, so you try knowing that you don't have much time and effort to lose. Later as the game grows in days of play, you become more fearful of death. Even though you can kill and probably survive easier, the price is now higher (your time and effort so far).
Makes you think twice about jumping into the fray of things.
You REALLY NEED a power backup system in place. Mine has saved my game three times so far.
Rumor has it, that when you get ready to save and exit (and you don't have to have salvage insurance, and you can save anytime) you need to first check and see if you can see your achievements from within X3TC. If they show, your Steam client is online. If it's blank, do not exit and try to save. The save says it was successful, but if it was offline, then the Steam cloud server did not receive your key file. You can reload if you haven't exited X3TC entirely, but I have not tested it yet to see if it will reload if you exit X3TC before rebooting or exiting Steam client.
There is a bit of magic at work here it seems. You cannot just backup your save file and replace it later for a reload. It has to be the one for the sent key.

Dead is Dead Game Saves
The game does save a file to your own hard drive. The same place as your none dead is dead saves.
What I think happens though is that Steam saves some details of your games as a reference. Possibly md5sum and/or file size as record tracking.
If you do die (and I have several times) your local file is deleted and the Steam reference destroyed.
Now while creating a md5sum collision may be possible for your local save combining that with file size makes it extremely difficult to manipulate/con/fudge/backup and restore a game.
