what i think the game needs to make it better experience

hi there

i was wondering when/ if you where going to make the x series an online multilayer/ and if you where going to add designing your own ship feature to the games shipyards i believe that both these items in the game it's self would make the gaming experience so much better for the user and i believe that it will be a lot more popular.[color=#ffff7f][/color][color=#444444][/color]

The X series is one of those few games that would suffer from Multyplayer/online play.

Just imagine it, you host a game, get 4 people to join and when you happily trade, one of the players decide to specifically target you as your tradeships usually carry high value stuff, or are always decent equipped (good caps), as we all know player > NPC, no amount of escortships can stop him....
Can also work the other way, you as a pirate have fun in pirate alley, capping ships & fixing/equipping them for your fun ragtag fleet. Then some big fleet from a player passes by, wiping out all your hard earned wingmen.

In the end, X multiplayer would greatly reduce the amount of variety we play X, forcing us to take the path of maximum profit with minimal assets.

Yeah, this idea/request has been posted quite a few times in the past.

Main problem as I see it is that X games are empire-building - you get the sense of rising from humble beginnings to tower above entire races, undisputed master of the galaxy. That wouldn't be possible in any fair way with multiple people playing.

However, I've been thinking what would be cool is if people could upload aspects of their game (assets, play style, universe history, etc), then others could intelligently and selectively splice it into their own game. So you're still playing against AI but with some elements contributed by other people.

But none of it is gonna happen, at least not for this iteration of the X series.

I've toyed with the idea of a multiplayer x3 (And currently, it is VERY low on my priority of stuff to mod, thou I could be persuaded if another c# programmer wants to do it with me :) )

But the short list of problems
1: Bandwidth, higher then FPS' (as there is a 3rd dimenion, ~ dimensions, not 3)

2. Will you be happy if someone blows up your stuff?

it could work but i agree with alot of what was said here, If implemented in a whole fashion you would have a game exactly like eve, except combat i more entertaining and challenging. Perhaps something more like guild wars however would be more x3 style.

Think of it like this, a special sector that can be accessed only if you have a internet connection. In this sector there are a few unique stations that act as specific functions. a few examples would the following:

Multi-verse Trading station: this station works alot like the pokemon global trader if you are familiar with that, if not here is how it would work, you are looking for a unique ship/weapon/ware/upgrade, you post what you are looking for, and along with that you post what you are willing to trade for it. success is ultimately dependent on what you are offering. for example alot of the universe is random i have noticed and in a particular save i had, no local borons carried any ion disruptors, woulda been nice to trade with someone whos save was littered with IDs but say mass driver were scarce and was in the market for some.

Co-op multiplayer missions: this station is where players can group up and complete objectives together in online only special sectors/ instanced unique universes. meaning the only players in the universe are those grouped together, also the only resources they have is what they bring with them prior to entering the multiplayer sector.

Cantina: every multiplayer sector should have a cantina, a place where people can just take a break without actually taking a break. here players can just gather and chat.

competitive arena Station: here players can actually battle it out in quite a few situations. we could have CTF, one on one, two on two, fleet vs fleet, all of this taking place in a hand full of pre designed special online only sectors. winners also get achievements/ unique rewards points whatever the creative developers can come up with. and if you happen to be on the losing side, well too bad so sad we can offer you a special taxi jump to another ship you own. unless of course you have only one ship left in which case you will not be allowed to dock in the competitive arena. (this way you cant royally ruin your progress)

I think this form of multiplayer would be the best, while still maintaining everything that makes X3 spectacular. course with all this awesomeness i dont think we could call it X3 anymore maybe X4 would be more appropriate.

Finally there is one more issue that would have to be addressed, Cheating. Its inevitable and not everyone is comfortable competing with cheaters nor are they comfortable co opping with them. now im not saying everyone is a cheater, but there i nothing that ruins an experience than losing something you worked hard for legitimately to someone who is a hacker/ cheater / exploiter whatever. I also believe that cheating shouldn't be wholly discouraged, what someone views as cheating another could view as convenience, therefor some sort of anti cheating detection system should be in-place and if cheating has been detected they can only compete and participate on a non official sector. as for rewards they should not be as special as those earned legitimately so as to not cheapen the hard work of the legits.

this feature would not be simple to implement, but the rewards could possibly make X a game of the year title. i have stated in a previous post that while in my book X3 is a winner in my book, not many people know of it. i only learned of it by searching and trial and error for a game of a particular style like wing commander privateer.

  • DevNet L3+ Ideas is the Forum for feasible proposals of novel features, such as multi-player and modular ships. Mind the strict posting rules down there, and please note that both these ideas have already been proposed there.
  • Discussing how vanilla game could have something is not S&M.
  • Repeating discussion on same old topic (with same ideas) gets close to Rule 6 (even if unintentionally).
  • Considering the link posted by X2-Illuminatus there is no point for moving this thread.
For S&M aspect: the engine does not support either idea in the OP (apart from overtuning ships as form of "ingame design").

Now, what does the other fella usually say at this point? Force Majeure? :gruebel:
