I'll post my old rig's results later on - TC was just playable on it. Any ideas why my CPU is quoted at 2.8GHz rather than 3.16? And what is the significance of the "used vertexsize" figure?
Me=dumbass. Here's the benchmark without Boinc using 40% of the CPU

In answer to why is my CPU reported as 2.8 not 3.16 I suspect the multiplier in the BIOS is set to 8.5 not 9.5 as it should be. It is possible to set lower multipliers on locked CPUs such as yours.

Ok, thanks for that. It's actually at 8 (max 9 it seems). So I guess it shipped underclocked?

OK, now I know there is a valid answer to this so I ask the experts:

I understand the X games utilize only a single core. Since there was quite a bit of talk earlier in this tread about the game engine being more CPU hunger than GPU hungry I thought I would try a little experiment to see how my AMD Opteron would hold up.

To check the max CPU usage I turned off virtually all items running in the background and allowed only the Task Manager to run while the X3 - TC Rolling Demo was playing.
After the demo concluded I checked the Task Manager CPU usage graph and to my surprise the CPU was not only NOT maxed out but it showed cores had been utilized to a fairly even degree. Not mirror images mid you but peaks and valleys / highs and lows being about equal.

How this be Joe?

Thanks in advance

JMD

Even if X3TC.exe itself is not multithreaded, Windows will take the liberty of shifting non-process related tasks to another core. That, and I think some things are multi-threaded, like sound. Not sure where I heard that, though.

Windows will automatically schedule "processcode" to an unused core when its most efficient. But if you use threads you will get more control from a programmers point of view WHEN to use another core. Its true that the sound often plays in a thread of its own. You can try starving the thread by setting up the main-thread-priority to REALTIME. You will get sound that stutter (at least on slow computers).

I think its all about how the algorithms used looks like.

The number of tests (collisiontests, AI-events-firing) grows extremely fast when there are lots of units in combat combining this with heavy graphics you will get a slow game (when number of units rise). The easiest solution is basically often to set a limit on the number of instances that can exist at the same time that can fire on each other. So Egosoft could easily enhance the FPS by : Make weapons fire less often and tune down the number of ships appearing at the same time (on missions for instance).

The nice thing about the game is the scale but it comes with a cost (some difficultylevels should be renamed to brutal or insane instead based on the number of ships spawned) ;)

Another thing is If you got an inefficient algorithm it wont matter how fast your computer is, the growth of how much CPU time that is needed to complete a number of vital tasks in a reasonable time is too fast.

(For an example, to complete update 1000 ships firing at each other IS VERY MUCH slower than have 900 ships firing at each other because of the nature of the collisiondetecionalgoritms works for an instance).

So people will notice this by a sudden drop of FPS when a hardwarelimit (often the CPU nowadays) is hit. Because the number of calculations that must be made suddenly jumps even if a small number of instances is added to the scene.

(Bought the game but cant register it(!))

Well, a single-threaded application is not going to max out a multi-core processor because it simply can't--if you HAD seen it max both cores then it would indicate it's a pretty efficient multi-threaded application.

Did anyone notice how the fps in the Trade scene is low for almost everyone, even the guy with the 4200 e8500 and 2x 4750 still got 20 min in that scene. A 4.2 ghz cpu and two 4750 video cards are basically of their knees in that scene, and that's just the demo, there are no stations and traders and so the cpu does not have to do all those extra calculations, yet the minimum fps seems to be low for most.

Can someone explain how such good systems are barely coping with such an old game engine? And the average fps is not an accurate representation in my opinion, some scenes in the demo go as high as 150+ fps on some rigs but those scenes are not what we encounter in the real game imo.

I appreciate whole heartedly what you’re saying. My post was not meant to point out an inefficiency of the game engine. I was simply asking for someone more knowledgeable than myself in regards to Windows XP CPU allocation to explain why a game designed access the CPU power of a single core was showing as accessing both.

On a second topic: Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on why the Demo does a noticeable chug at just about 13 and then again at 15 seconds into Trade portion? My FPS, as well as many others it seems, takes a hell of kidney punch at that spot and drops at least 20 fps instantly from high 40’s to mid 20’s. I can understand when the Titan blows but I don't take that type of instant hit even in the stunning final sequence.

The only thing that seems to help on my system is if I lower my texture to med. Anyone else?

Best again.

That is a bit low, so i tried changing various settings. For some reason "medium shaders" is *ugly* (similar to the first screenshot page 1).

Runs much worse than the X3 Reunion rolling demo, but I'll see if the actual ingame experience is also as bad in comparison. Looking forward to playing TC when I get it tomorrow.

- not bad, for an AGP card - it looks amazing onscreen.. :)

- Widescreen @ 1440x900
- everything on high - no glow - medium textures
- offline - a/v disabled - "Best" setting for sound-sampling rate
- ZA in "Game Mode" - Indexing Off - Systray cleared
- X3.exe priority raised to "Realtime" in Task Manager
[ external image ]
- and the cat's been fed, as well.. :D
odd - with new Catalyst driver v8.11, I get a slight reduction in ave. fps..

Here's my results. The CPU is oc'd to 4GHz. Only finished building this machine last week - finally upgraded from a P4 3.00GHz.

Interesting to see how much of a difference switching from 16xAF to 8x makes. AQC was left on for all tests.

I agree with the comments about the low frame rates in the "Trade" scene - even with the lowest settings, the minimum FPS was only 27!
