No, the next one almost certainly won't have multiplayer.
Here's the lay of the land for the un-initiated:
Egosoft plan on creating an MMO called X: Online at some point in the future. This is going to cost an absolute fortune to create and run.
At present, no investors have been found. Got a few million Sterling spare? Contact Egosoft.
The chances of there "just being a LAN version" are remote, as the costs and challenges are largely the same for development, and investors are less likely to go for LAN because there'd be no additional income.
Even a co-op mode is extremely unlikely to happen. The game would need a massive rewrite, to the point where it'd be almost unrecognisable to the X we know and love today.
Egosoft will need to introduce multiplayer-friendly concepts slowly (eg, removing SETA and associated tuning), over the course of a few sequels.

As an MMO I think it would have to be very good and innovitive to compete with the very popular space based MMORPG out there (Not mentioning any names!).
This might also make investors a bit wary of, welll investing hehe!
I for one, am not a great fan of multiplayer, having played many different MMORPG`s, I shunned the useless grouping, stupid PVP, and farming galor!!!
Let`s not ruin the fun!
As for the long time spent in the for-not-mentioned space MMO, and having it all obliterated in an instant, by some Pirates, if this game went anything like that, I for one, would not be buying it!!!!

Man, there needs to be a sticky on this. When i first got here i was wondering what all the hostility towards people inquiring about X-Online -edit- was all about, and now i understand. Very little can be said about it, and even less asked... Thus every post is pritty much the same and gets the same answers.
Even the Extra Search option turns up results... Look before you post (at least a little).

Hmm...
As far as online gaming goes, If I want to be a politician(which I don't) I'll go and do politic things.
Thats all online games are nowadays, people sitting around playing politics, I feel like I'm watching prime ministers question time.
'Do this... Do that'
'after that defeat in omicron lyrae why should we listen to you, my honored opponent?'
'Well, as my honourable friend stated, we did not have the resources, hence why we should do this mission'
'here here'

Actually esd made a good point there about game mechanics that had never even crossed my mind. SETA! The game is slooooowwww without this but it is not possible to have it in any sort of multiplayer environment. Add to that the antisocial tendencies of traders (emptying every weapon fab in the universe for profit) and so on and the game would need so many rewrites it would not be anything like the same game. Imagine having to actually wait, real time, for your hired Mammoth to transport your first wheat farm L from Light of Heart to core Argon space! And the Teladi M1/2s? My word. Click 'fly to', go make a cup of tea. And a three course meal. And maybe a bed.
Wow, I think this was my first post on an X-online thread. Normally I avoid them. But I had never really though much about how the game would have to change until this one. And now I think 'Stick to what we know'!

Try to equip a fleet of ships, owned by multiple players, with only a maximum of 2 G-PPC's in any Equipment Dock. Its gonna take time.
Although I dont mind doing it manually, its going to be a first-come-first-serve policy since you will loose the Docking Computer. It will make docking with capital ships interresting.

Been thinking about Multiplayer. Not MMO, just multi.
SETA could be replaced with some sort of 'In Sector' Jumpdrive system. Would use Enegry Cells of course. Could just 'Speed' up the ship your flying like SETA without making anything else go faster.
Also, an auto instant eject would be helpful. That way when you are blown up, (since there cant really be a game over) you just eject and either get moved to the nearest station or be picked up by one of your ships. Maybe give players a free crappy buster upon death. Always gotta have a ship.
The only other thing I would do for multi (not MMO) is either have the map wide open or let sections be purchased, and just give folks the ability to buy a jumpdrive easily.
Everything else after that would be fine. Couldnt do a storyline, but hey, as long as the BBS missions are there, that would be good. Im actually surprised no one has tried to mod a multiplayer version yet.

Wow what a responce thats what i ment not a mmo but like everyone says the rewrite would be a new game , oh the idea about a in sector SETA but only speeds your ship up would'nt work well not with out many fatalities
cos only your ship would be fast and willl have to weave in and out of other ships seta does not speed you ship up just moves time so every ones move at the same speed i say the theory of relativity bests explains that one

Well put it this way there have been THAT many threads on this particular issue it gets quite tedious, with that said I can't say I'd take to the idea of an online X game especially if I have to pay for the privilege, WoW anyone? Pretty much all Blizzard does now, and they just watch the creds roll in, so if Egosoft did X-online we can forget about X4.

I too was once one the OMG Multi so coo!!11!one bandwagon, but I have come to realize that the only kind of multiplayer for the game in its current form would e a combat mod only, and then you would have to write some kind of script that would create a npc ship that would respond to your opponents input and vise versa. They tried this for Oblivion (there was an article out for it a long while back) and it didn't work out so well. Communication would require a separate program as well, not to mention the complications of having two hosts.
@riverngash
Asking if there is multi in the next installment, I have no problem with but some people just seem to want to hate on someone just for asking an ignorant question. I call this the Internet Inferiority Complex, where one must always prove their dominance by attacking the weakest member of the group (examples include the noob phenomenon and trolls). I am not saying this about the people on this forum, just general human nature. That being said, people who constantly bring up the topic will be ostracized because everyone wants it (or almost every one), and they know that begging will get them nowhere.
not @ rivern
If you are tired of hearing/talking about something, why engage in the discussion?
Most people on this forum are polite to even poor quality posters, like myself. The community here is very polite, and helpful, and if you want to see something in the game, ask for the modders and you will probably see it. Rivern, stick around for a bit and I think you'll find this forum incredibly useful.
Edit: I am sating that I am a poor quality poster, as at least half my posts are garbage, but I'm too lazy to go back and edit them. Curse you internet and your lack of inflection!

The only way I can see Egosoft making any money from a LAN based multiplayer is if they make it as a whole new game and charge it accordingly. I would pay 90 AUD for a whole new lan version of X3, but this is what you must decide, we won't get multiplayer for free.
Having said that this new version should not support Singleplayer, it would be LAN /WAN only with Egosoft hosting a game list server.
