Action and reaction: Prologue

Post by Dragoongfa »

The idea for this story came to me while playing the X3 plot.It takes place in the same time as the X3 plot and it uses some of its story elements.

Chapter 1
Chapter 2

Prologue:

Crystal Fab M Alpha, Kingdom End. Sometime before the rediscovery of Earth

"Well just 20 more mizuras before the end of this shift, just 20 more freaking mizuras so relax already."

The two security guards, passed yet an other junction.

"Even single mizura is an eternity in this place, I tell you, there must no worse post than being the security guard in a boron station in the middle of Kingdom end.” One of them said.

"You think this is the worse post you can get, once you finish your training boy you will see the worse trust me on that." The other replied.

"Anything is better than sitting on your bastu all day doing nothing OLD man.”

"You will see, in a few years you will beg not getting shot at every few stazuras. You will remember this place as the next closest thing to paradise. Come on now lets do the final patrol of the docking bays." The guards continued their routes, on the way to the docking bays the older security guard tried to give some advice to the younger one.

“Remember that no one ever notices station security officers, unless they need you or they plan something dubious, the security guards on the other hand must always be vigilant, everybody in the station depends on them, the book covers everything.” The younger one frowned at the advice.

"Does the field manual contain any real advice or it just points out the basics of the basics?"

"The field book one day WILL save your life, read it, memorize it and most of all UNDERSTAND it; remember that unlike any other manuals this one was written by veterans of the firm, everything that has ever happened on our shifts has in one way or an other made it into that manual.” That remark must have hit a nerve on the young trainee.

“Don’t patronize me old man, I can handle myself.”

"You will see....Trust me...you will..."

The two men continued on with their routes, both in silence after the last remarks, both seemed lost in their thoughts but they both were in the lookout for anything out of the ordinary, even if the young trainee was a little bored.

"Patrol 1 this is operations, report." A voice sounded at their comm links.

"This is patrol 1 nothing to report." The old security guard responded to his comm link.

“Of course there is nothing to report, what would happen in a crystal fab in the middle of kingdom end?” The young trainee replied earning him a side look from his trainer and a small pause from the woman at the operations center.

"Patrol 1 I am registering some strange energy readings from a cargo container in the docking bay 3, go and investigate." The voice responded, seemingly oblivious to the last remark.

"You wanted some action boy well lets see how you handle this then, its all up to you" he said laughing.

The young trainee grinned but he didn't respond, never look a gift horse at the mouth was his thought and all things considered this was probably the most exciting thing in the entire shift.

“So young man, what does the book say about strange energy readings from the cargo bay?” The trainee thought for a little and then responded.

"It will most probably be a damaged sensor in the docking bay but if we are lucky it will be a signal dampener they use for contraband smuggling.” The trainee responded in a cheerful voice.

“Why so excited?”

"Whatever this is it will probably keep us busy until the end of our shift. At least we won’t be bored to death until then." He thought for a second and then asked his trainer.

"Isn't docking bay 3 the closest one to the E cell storage compartment?"

"Yep that’s the one, energy transporters use it all the time."

"I heard somewhere that E cells are the preferred smokescreen ware when you transport contraband is that true?"

"Until recently it was, with the new security scanners though that trick is a thing of the past but now they came up with signal dampeners that disguise the signature that the sensors receive, that’s why we do random checks on some of the containers."

With all that they reached docking bay 3. The older guard gestured to his trainee to go on

"Operations we reached docking bay 3, which one is it?" The trainee asked.

"Container 15, its the closest one to the energy coupling far to your left."

They both started moving towards the container in question, then the older guard tapped the shoulder of his trainee and whispered.

“Pay attention kid.” The trainee was a little surprised but remained silent.

"One of these days Misao i have to take you out, you know." The old guard said to his comm. link.

"Hey you are old enough to be my father, no wait, you are OLDER than my father." Misao replied in a somewhat cheerful note.

"Its tradition you know, I asked out every last female operator in the company and now you just say no for over a mazura." The guard said apologetically.

"All the females... no wonder the Split one gives you side looks." Misao responded sarcastically, causing the young guard to giggle.

"First of all her name is Zarrt n'tn and second, as I said it is tradition, nothing inappropriate."

"Well I will think about it."

"Women kid, women they are there just to cause us trouble."

"I heard that."Misao complained, the young guard could barely contain his laughter before he talked.

"Ok now that we reached the container can we please open it show we can continue with our lives, especially because this love chatter is starting to turn my stomach."

"Just press the damn button kid and it will open, no locked containers are permitted in the docking bays." The old guard responded.

"Yes yes I remember: In order to randomly check the containers for contraband.”

The trainee reached the console and gave the command to open but the panel just flashed access denied.

"Hey this one is locked.”

"Well somebody is in for a fine, try the security override."

The trainee tapped a few controls at his datapad and then tried the control console on the container, the controls again flashed a big red access denied; the young trainee scratched his head looking at the older guard, who politely pointed at his comm. link, the trainee immediately took the hint.

"Operator can you do anything about this one, won’t open with anything we can do."

"Running police warrant override now." Misao responded

"Nothing happened, Misao." The access denied sign still flashed.

"Wait, I will try hack the lock and delete its commands, it may take a mizura."

"You are in luck, kid by the looks of it , it is contraband." The old guard commented.

"What could it be? Space Fuel?"

"Maybe but my money is on space weed, space fuel is just a jump away, space weed four.”

"Almost done it... there , try it now." Misao commented, the young guard once again operated the controls, this time the container started to open.

"Well Misao I will have to buy you dinner just for th, holy shit." Both guards were in shock at the sight of a hornet missile rigged with a timer, just sezuras from detonating.

"Operations we have a live hornet in docking bay 3 I repeat we have a live hornet in docking bay 3, commence code red now...run ." The old guard yelled at his comm link and started running for the blast doors, they ran as fast as they could; perhaps even faster than they even. The doors were closing already.

"You are faster kid, run god dammit ,run."He yelled to his trainee, the young trainee managed to get past the blast door just before it close for the emergency depressurization but the other guard wasn't fast enough, the trainee tried to open them just a little but nothing could reverse the process once it started.

“Station integrity must be preserved at all costs.” The old guard told to himself as he drew his blaster and aimed at his forehead, he did all the as he saw the docking bay doors opening, the vacuum claiming everything that wasn’t bolted down, the explosion got him before he pressed the trigger.

Sorry, mate, didn't get around to reading it any sooner.

Great start! Yet another completely different angle. I guess that was a tad more action than the kid wanted. One old instructor who no longer gets bored. Looking forward to seeing the continuation of the story.
