I was wondering if maybe a mod could be made to make the game multiplayer. I don't know if this is possible or not, but the game really plays quite a bit like a MMORPG except its just singleplayer. It would be fascinating to be able to play with your friends in a MMORPG-type version of this, or even just an single instanced one I guess.
Like you just start off with so much money and a ship, and you can proceed to build an empire and trade with other players and such, or be a mercenary or a pirate.
Maybe I just miss Earth and Beyond....
X3 multiplayer.. is it possible?

I never said anything about it being magical
But anyway, is this multiplayer X Universe game going to be like a MMORPG-style with montly fees and such? Or would it work more like how Freelancer's multiplayer did? I understand that its just a plan right now and wont happen until the sun burns out or something but I'm just curious as to if Egosoft is going to go MMORPG with their game series or not.
..I can't stand Blizzard or Square Enix anymore after that stuff.

The long-term plans involve an MMOG with a working title of Online Universe. However since this is still well into the future, there is no point in discussing things like how it will be paid for.
There are currently no plans for Freelancer-style multiplayer because the X Universe is about long-term empire-building, not quick skirmishes. It also requires a large amount of processing power to handle the background universe, which in a multiplayer environment means a dedicated server.

Just a thought, but as far as the storeyline goes, there could be an additional gate somewhere which jumps ships to a new set of on-line multiplayer sectors that only works for the player ship.
We could all go mineing, looking for good deals or just go for a fight. Anything bought, found capped could be brought back to the non on-line game.
No on-line saves to keep things interesting. No fighter support unless you arrive in a ship that has docked ships.
I dunno about programming & stuff so the viability of this idea is something I have absolutely no clue on, but if it's still early days . . .

TBH I honestly cant see it being anything but pay as you play, the long term costs of maintaining a series of servers capable of running this sort of game would be a massive loss for anyone considerring operating it on a on off purchass the game and we will run the server basis.kilauea wrote:I never said anything about it being magical

Correct me if I am wrong but I think Diablo 1 (if its still going) and 2 (including expansion) are the only online games run in this way, dont even consider games like Couter-strike, they are pay as you play its just the pay is done by companies independant of the game suplier or by individuals who want to run a gameserver in the way they wish to.
There are also some advantages to pay as you play. As you are paying over a long period of time the games tend to be better supported than average (In Egosoftd case this is gonna be hard to believe as they give the best post release support have seen anywhere), you tend not to get the annoying immature players joining in as they are generally less able to support the long term investment
and just imagine seeing the BBS message
Some player guild has declared war on "sectorname" Another player guild invites all non aligned players to join us in defending sectorname at 12:00 GMT Saturday 20 th April 2008.
Please message defending guilds Battlemaster for your Battle assignement
Not that this is nessercarily the sort of thing invisioned but it is believable given the present game stucture

Guildwars is an online game that is not pay as you play. I know its a little different, but starcraft and warcraft 3 are also online games that are not pay as you play. The server loads are less for those RTS games, but its still there. I think, though, its worth keeping in mind that Diablo 2 sold extremely well as did starcraft and warcraft. Also, GuildWars is selling quite well too.
In any case, a X MMO game would be fun for sure. It would be very cool to be able to build your own space stations in a MMO game and setup trade routes and such. I know that EVE sort of incorporates that sort of thing, but something about the way EVE feels just sucks. I really don't know how else to put it.

Dont know much about guildwars but RTS games do not actually use an online server but the host of the game is effectively the server ( or at least thats how all the C&C and AoE ones worked ) this does not require the anywhere near the same level of sophistication in hardware and server access that a MMORPG does.
As for Diablo the word is D3 is gonna be PAYP and D2 is not very well suported by Blizzard, yes there are updates but server downtime and lag issues are no better now than when it was released. If your game income is dependant on maintaining the quality of a game well beyond release the you are IMHO more likely to get a seriously longterm game, that again IMHO will become more a hobby than a game.
All this is of course pure speculation as we the punters have no Idea other than the official line of "its being looked at for the future" whatis realy being aimed for.

Freelancer style multiplayer would be great!! I would buy two more copies. Finding a third computer to be the "server" for Freelancer was easy enough for most of us. Sell the multiplayer extra as an add-on and lots of us would pay more and find the hardware. Then we could pressure our friends to buy copies so they could play X3 with us. Long term empire building player vs player.
