Why is the X3 copy protection such a big secret?
Why not just release the information about what copy protection different regions will use so we all can pre order and go on with our lives?

I think some people want to know if Starforce is being used as it can sometimes cause problems. I've had personal experience of this when I installed GT Legends one week ago. It uses starforce protection and due to a conflict with the version that shiped with the game and the version of Zonealarm I'm using it actually blue screened my PC and I had to do a full rebuild.
I personally don't care what they use, starforce included, it can install whatever it wants on my PC and read anything on my hard drives and registry. I've nothing to hide. I'd just prefere it not to kill my PC.

I believe the starforce drivers have improved somewhat since then, However it is not up to the developer it is up to the publisher, so there is no point in pestering Egosoft about it, pester Deepsilver or Enlight or QV they are the ones who decide CP
HAR HAR HAR, It be here!!!!

Because, and I don't know how many times I've said this recently (click my profile then "find all posts" if you really want to know how many), quite simply we do not know!MDH wrote:Why not just release the information about what copy protection different regions will use so we all can pre order and go on with our lives?
It is the publisher that decides on and impliments the copy protection system on a game they publish, not the developer.
So, it's not a secret at all, at least, not one that we're in on. Once people have had access to the game, then we'll all know what CP is where. I too want to know.
There is no evidence of this, especially given that people have serious legitimate concerns regarding Starforce in particular.Because a large portion of the people wanting to know what the protection is are asking for less than honest reasons.
Due to the tendancy of threads discussing copy protection systems to drift into areas that are strictly against forum rules, I am giving fair warning now. Any discussion that breaks the forum rules will result in this thread being locked immediately, with no further warning.

It is not the job of Egosoft to answer these questions.
To use or not to use Copy Protection, it is down to the publisher Deep Silver/Enlight.
And it is up to us if we agree to the license agreement or not.
If we do, great. If we don't, then don't buy the software.
The CP developers badge will be on the box.
What ever the case it won't stop me from a purchase.
CP is for the good of the industry. So I'm all for it as long as it does'nt cause conflicts with my system

Now I know that Starforce has caused some people no end of difficulties with their computers, but I had no idea that it affected their needlework and textiles skills too!iam.cool wrote:Starforce is anti costumer thats all that matters.....
Yes, a joke based on a typo. Sorry.

I took some time, and did some research about Starforce, which appears to be alot more than some people do!

The "Firingsquad" interviewed a representative whom outlined what it does, how it acts, exactly why it is chosen etc. It made interesting and informative reading, with the interviewer seemingly giving a balanced opinion.
I highly/strongly suggest people read it.

Very well done at finding this article. I second that suggestion that people take time to read it.Chips wrote:I took some time, and did some research about Starforce, which appears to be alot more than some people do!

Seeing as there's a possibility that Starforce will be on the UK version I'll be getting, we'll see if all the hoopla amounts to anything.
As a side note, when I was younger, copy protection was a pain in the rear as I felt I was being "stuck" by the man. A decade or two later, you realize that you have yourself become the "man" with bills to pay and interests that need to be protected to insure your long and short-term financial health. As the author states, if copy protection allows developers and publishers to keep on making good games, what's the problem?
My 2 cents.

Don't feed the trolls.

People have looked into it before, and for example, this thread in Off Topic went to some lengths to discuss and investigate it.

Remember, you don't have to read itwe don't we just drop the copy protection system debate

I hate invasive copy protection, hell I hate CD-Keys. In fact, CD-Keys are one of the most misused forms of anti-piracy. For example, you put a CD-Key in, you play online with a server full of people with the same CD key - no one gets blacklisted. How hard is it to put some logic into the server code to check keys, any duplicates get sent to the master server for black listing?
Anyway, I see why copy protection is used, and tbh, think it should carry on for now. However, it is also true that people with legit copies have to put up with more hassle.
Ideally, the view of piracy of games needs to become as bad as mugging someone on the street. I am the only person (in real life) I know who thinks of piracy as a very bad thing, it would seem piracy is 'accepted'. I bought FEAR recently said it was good at work, and the first response was 'well, I might as well download it and give it a bash then'. Its got that bad that games aren't even 'worth' a free & illegal download.
Remove the view that piracy is 'ok', and the copy protection will be removed. Ultimately copy protection is worthless in the end, and I don't believe that there are some Starforce games haven't been cracked - unless the games were flops and therefore not 'worth' cracking.
So either remove the thought piracy is ok, or have severe punishments for those who do pirate - and actually follow through with the punishments.

i just want to say i realy liked that interview, it were more "neutral" in its writing then others i have seen (long time ago, that one even said that it worked like a trojan and sent information on what games were on your computer and if you had cracked them (not true ofcorse ))
and i do not care about copy protection, if it do crach my computer i only format the thing and install X3 again i suck at all games so i dont care about my saves and stuff
sorry for bad spelling,
