[#5942] Black screen then visual freeze - resolved after system reinstall

Hey

A while ago I started having the issue that my monitors would flicker black when playing. After this the image on the screen stays frozen, but the game is still going. I had a modded game, I have the same issue without mods, I have repaired my installation, did a clean driver install. My GPU is not overheating when it happens. This usually happened when I was jut loaded into a game, or after a minute when in the creative start options.

After repairing the install and removing the shader cache to be sure, and starting without any unofficial extensions, it now freezes immediately when loading the main screen.

I had 232 hours in the game before, of which 180 the last weeks. No clue why it is happening now.

In the logs I see the following:

• The same issue with or without mods, currently a clean game.

• Cannot even get to game start.

• Black flickering, then game visuals freeze.

• I had mods before but this is a clean install. I also have a clean GPU driver install.

• Will provide the game log, vulkan and dxdiag if needed.

In the DxDiag posted, Windows has not recognised your Nvidia RTX 3060 Laptop graphics card nor its driver. You need to run another DxDiag with your graphics driver installed and stable and then link that. (The same may be true of your other supplied files if they were from the same time.) I assume that updating the graphics driver did not help with the game.

You have many, many different sound devices and drivers on the go at the same time with drivers of varying ages. Disable any you don't use in Control Panel, Device Manager, Sound/Audio Devices (right-click on a device in the listing for a disable/enable pop-up). Whatever you keep, make sure that they are updated to latest WHQL driver version.

You only have one Windows Error Report in the DxDiag and that is that One Drive was unable to start.

Removed all unneeded audio drivers. According to what I see, it should be installed..
A clean install of the graphics driver did not help.
I see in the included windows event log the error that 'nvlddmkm' for my card throws an error. But that was installed correctly according to the device manager, and event log, from what I can tell.

Thanks, the graphics driver shows OK in that DxDiag, although it is not the absolute latest WHQL Nvidia driver and Vulkan as it is over 2 months old. You are still having One Drive starting issues reported though (now 2 reports).

The fact that a graphics driver issue is mentioned in the event log is a concern though. Unfortunately there's no real indication about what else to try apart from updating the driver.

In fact I had downgraded the driver at the last clean install, to see if the latest driver were the issue. But I guess I can try upgrading it again. Thing is, it seems no matter which version I use, the same issue gets mentioned.

The One Drive I have no turned of from startup applications (again), because I do not use it.

I will try upgrading it again when I have time.

Updated the driver again to the latest version, did a complete reinstall of the game to be sure. Same issue. I think for now I will have to give up.

I have done a complete clean reinstallation of my laptop, windows, drivers, everything, with a completely clean disk. X4 seems to run perfectly now. I will blame it on some sort of driver corruption that persisted.
