Required Information in all Technical Support Requests

Please ensure that you provide the following information for all questions posted in this Technical Support forum.
  • Version and language (e.g. 8.00 Hotfix 3, English, etc.).
  • Whether or not your game is modified using any third party scripts or mods (see note below).
  • The game start you originally selected for the game in which the problem occurred.
  • Exact nature of the problem, where and when it occurs and what you were doing at the time.
  • Any possibly relevant changes you have made to your game, system, or software before the issue occurred.
  • Where appropriate, additional symptoms, error messages, links to saves, screenshots and crash dump files (see this Wiki entry).
  • Your system specifications in the form of a DxDiag report and vulkaninfo (see this Wiki entry).
Failure to provide all this information will make it pretty much impossible for people to help you and may mean that it takes longer for your problem to be identified and hopefully solved. So please don't waste your own time and everyone else's by just posting something like "My game freezes. Help!!!".

If you are supplying information that will not conveniently fit into posts in this forum (approx 70,000 character limit per post), in the worst case you can split long text files across 2 consecutive posts, or ideally you can upload the data to a reputable public fileshare site (a few examples are Google Drive, DropBox or PasteBin, etc) but please don't use sites that spam advertising or require registration for downloads. Please use in your post the open public sharing link to your file(s) that will not require any account or registration for others to download.

Note: Support for third party modifications must be provided by the authors of those modifications, and any requests for such support should be posted in the appropriate thread in the Scripts and Modding forum.

[9.0] Lost all missions, log book and tutorial reset in my save - Corrupted Save?

Post by Mystik »

I have a very frustrating problem. When I loaded my save, I discovered that my list of accepted missions (30+) in my mission manager is now completely empty! The log book is also empty.

Furthermore, I can see all the notifications reminding me to complete the tutorials and missions. The same thing happens when I load my last auto-save.

I'm also experiencing a number of strange issues. If a scan a leak with someone talking, it doesn't show up the mission description (like if I can't take new mission anymore).
I still see some mission offer in the mission offers and I can accept them. Upon acceptation, they show in the mission manager.

This is a new game that I started with version 9.0 without any DLC.

I've tried reinstalling the game and verify the files (Steam), but it didn't change anything.

Someone else reported a similar problem on Steam Forum in 2024: https://steamcommunity.com/app/392160/d ... 763784213/

Try loading an older save that was known to work, or checking if the issue persists in a new playthrough.

Problems like described here can be the result of an incomplete or corrupted save, where either X4 crashes or is blocked from fully completing a save, or something prevents it from parsing a save file fully. The X4 engine is very robust and will often "successfully" load such saves but the result is a rather broken universe where entire classes of data might be missing and key mechanics broken.

Your save file provided is 41MB which seems near 75% of what a typical X4 mid-game gamesave might be, even if without the DLCs. I guess something earlier in the save chain was lost during a save or load process.

I understand your point. My 300 hours save file from 8.0 is 130Mb.

But... This game is only 10 hours old (new start with 9.0). A correct older save is also 41Mb.

If I analyze the XML of the problematic save file, I can find the name of some missions that was on my list like: "Promotion to: Friend of the Federation" or "Going Offensive"
If the mission menu is empty in the game, the missions still exist in the XML and their descriptions are still present.

I'm hesitant to accuse the save file of being corrupted.

- save_009.xml.gz decompresses correctly.
- The XML is readable to the end.
- The missions still exist in the save file.
- The file size is practically identical to a working save file from the same game (10 hours of gameplay).
- It doesn't look like a file that was interrupted mid-writing.

The broken save is not significantly smaller, decompresses correctly, appears structurally complete, and still contains the mission entries themselves.

Since the mission data is still present, could the issue instead be caused by a loading failure of a related subsystem (mission manager, logbook, guidance, tutorials, player progression state) rather than an incomplete save write?

Hello, I also have a similar problem with my save file...

I've seen that you also have the Emissary ship in your image files, and I wonder if the bug could be linked to the way camo is handled by the game during a save... When you activate cloak to look like your are of another faction, your owned ship list disappears, as if you do not own them... don't get me wrong, I think it's a neat mecanic, since you are under cover, it make sense you cannot order fleets from there, but I wonder if since you are not part of your own faction, if the save breaks the link between what is yours and what isn't...

I've made a few observation, trying to figure out what had happened
  • All player owned ships stop moving on the map
  • All player owned station spam mission to have subordinate even if subordinates are affected to stations
  • Player can move around their pilots/managers to resume normal behaviors of ships/stations
  • Effectivly void any story mission or mission progression you had going on
  • other faction standing unchanged
  • some areas that was explored by a ship you didn't pilot are lost
do you have the same problems...?

Speculation is less useful than evidence, in the form of links to unmodified savegames. :)
