Greenland
well, let's go a thread for Greenland specific news
we are here before any attacks took place yet
Trump had threatened Greenland with an easy way or a hard way.
What is the hard way?

Re: Greenland
You would have to ask Trump that question, but it basically covers anything not being total and immediate capitulation and agreement.

Re: Greenland
I do think this is a step too far even for many of Trump's most ardent supporters. I feel if he tries to force the issue, which due to his detachment from reality he will, he will be stopped and perhaps even declared unfit for office by whatever legal processes are still in operation over there.
I mean, Germany are sending warships (a token I know) to Greenland to express solidarity. You don't get to annex a friendly nation's territory for contrived reasons and think there will be no repercussions.
In other words, Trump is a delusional dribble of puke who is about to find out he's not beyond sanction, and no amount of distraction is going to prevent whatever truths lie within the Epstein files from emerging.
The hard way will be for him to face justice. There is no hard way for Greenland, I pray.

Re: Greenland
Trump has ordered his military chief to draw up plans to invade Greenland. So he gone from considering it, to planning it. Congress better stop him, if this does happen. WW3 will happen. Sure there are videos saying people should not follow illegal orders. But Trump isn't happy with that. But anyway, This is very much going to happen. unless congress strips him from his war powers.

Re: Greenland
Again, this will only embolden the villains of this world. Taiwan will be hit by China, Russia won't stop Ukraine invasion and terrorize others.
US has this on it's conscience and I'd say all good things which they did in WW2 will be overshadowed by them being the villains now who bully anyone who they consider lesser into submission. This will end bad once the bloodshed is over. Just like we Germans had it bad after our dictator was violently removed from the country (which he chickened out from, but the country was trashed nevertheless).

Re: Greenland
The thing that is not clear to me at all, who in US would stop Trump's order to invade Greenland today?
He is about to turn Venezuela into a colony, and Republicans said basically - yep, this is right, even though we still don't know what's going on, this is all fine.
Europe's reaction was mostly - well what can you do

Re: Greenland
Fiksal, I thought the congress had passed a motion forbidding any further military action in Venezuela without their prior approval (52-47 or something.)
Many of Trump's actions are short-sighted/short-term, and I believe those who aren't quite so old as him are getting a little nervous about life after his demise. I don't think any order he gives to invade Greenland will be obeyed, and I feel if he tries to press it, he will be ousted. I feel more than hopeful this time he will be thwarted.

Re: Greenland
He may try to bribe the residents of Greenland with 100k dollars each or something. At around 50,000 residents, that's around 5 billion dollars.
Not that I feel it is ethical. But if he offered enough resident enough money, is there a chance the residents would vote to join the US?

For example.
Does that come with citizenship? Because if not what is going to happen is the following:
Greenland joins America.
Residence are not American.
ICE declares them illegal immigrants and begins deporting them to god knows where.
Americans searching for anew start move into the vacant homes.
ICE gets to fill its quotas, Americans get cheap houses and a new start. Greenland is now ethnically cleansed and 'truly' American.

Re: Greenland
Let's say hypothetically Trump offers each resident of Greenland a million US dollars and full US citizenship, if they vote in a referendum to join the US. That would be 57 billion US dollars, certainly not cheap, but something the US could afford if they really were intent on making Greenland part of the US.
Not that I think this would be a good idea for the people of Greenland to accept, that would essentially be like making a deal with the devil.
I can't see how Trump gets his way in Greenland without essentially bribing the population. But even bribing them in such a manner would probably mean the end of the NATO alliance.

Re: Greenland
I am not so sure about the NATO part. Europe really wants NATO to continue and if you ask me, the people of Greenland have every right to decide if they want to be Americans or not, no matter if that comes with money or not.Falcrack wrote: ↑Tue, 13. Who am I, a random guy in Germany, to tell them where they belong? It also isn't my right to tell them not to take the money. My problem and the problem of most Europeans isn't Greenland having a democratic vote to join America, sucks for Denmark I guess, but whatever, the issue is if they aren't given the choice (and to be fair, Denmark's possession of the island is certainly also something worth having a conversation about, as that is also a story with more than a few dark chapters).
What I will say though, is that I have never heard a German domestic nuclear arms program being brought up as often as I have heard it in recent days. This is purely anecdotal though and might very well just be coincidence.

Republican introduces bill seeking to make Greenland 51st state
Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) has introduced a bill to make Greenland the 51st state in the U.S., following President Trump’s recent push to acquire the Danish territory.
The “Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act” was introduced by the Florida Republican on Monday, his office said in a press release. The bill’s goals, according to its text, include enabling “the annexation and subsequent admission to statehood of Greenland.”
“Greenland is not a distant outpost we can afford to ignore—it is a vital national security asset,” Fine said in the press release. “Whoever controls Greenland controls key Arctic shipping lanes and the security architecture protecting the United States.”
“America cannot leave that future in the hands of regimes that despise our values and seek to undermine our security,” he added.
The bill states President Trump “is authorized to take such steps as may be necessary, including by seeking to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark, to annex or otherwise acquire Greenland as a territory of the United States.”
After the U.S. owns Greenland, under the bill, Trump then has to send a report to Congress featuring possible federal law changes “as the President may determine necessary to admit the newly acquired territory as a State.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday said that there was not a “timeline” for the U.S. to take over Greenland.
“[Trump] has not set a timeline, but it’s definitely a priority for him,” Leavitt told reporters.
“I think the president was very clear last night,” she continued. “He said that he wants to see the United States acquire Greenland because he feels if we do not, then it will eventually be acquired or even perhaps hostilely taken over by either China or Russia.”
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Sunday that the U.S. taking action to acquire Greenland by force would mark the end of the NATO alliance.
“It would be the end of NATO,” Murphy told host Kristen Welker in an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

And I'm pretty sure he's had his bumhole surgically removed and grafted onto his face, just below his nose.

But, yeah, a lot of such bills are designed to curry favour rather than ever be enacted.

Re: Greenland
If the Congress didn't have so many toadies who were prepared to vote in favour of Trump's unbalanced nonsense no matter how stupid it is, I'd say bring it on. A vote on this which utterly humiliated Trump would be quite a useful tool for those opposing him.
But there's too much risk that idiots might think "Eh, it's something that won't affect us personally, let's vote for the President."

Re: Greenland
Various European countries have sent troops to defend Greenland from the US. Their orders are to shoot first and ask questions later. This might be how trump/russia gets the US out of NATO. Removing the US military bases/presence including civilians seems like a good idea at this point. They are also discussing making a defence force that doesn't include the US.
