Which DLC to Enable 1st? Returning Player

Post by MarvinTheMartian »

Hi. According to my most recent X4 save, it's been 5 years since my last session. I'm guessing a few things have changed since

My save has a S/M shipyard and factories to support production so would like to use that as a base game going forward. I never did manage that game's goal of putting HOP back in their place and stealing their conquered sectors but I'm interested to see what the DLCs have to offer, I have bought them all but disabled them so far while I play the vanilla game.

Apart from the addition of Boron, Split and Terran races and their ships/wares, I have no idea what the DLCs add to the games so... is there a common wisdom of an order in which to add them to a game?

I want to experience each DLC in its own right rather than add them all at once and call it a new base game.

Cheers,

Marv.

In all honesty i think most people just activate them all and do the missions if/when you want.

If you want to activate them in an order where they have the least effect on your current universe then i would suggest Tides of Avarice, and Boron (They are activated via quest).

If you're talking about story/lore wise i have no idea as it never interested me.

I would activate the Boron first, do their gate questline & when finished; activate the others. This way all DLC factions are roughly linked at the same time with the X-Universe & their economies are in a similar state of development.

If you prefer to do them separately, I could suggets this order:

- Hyperion (You get an explorer L ship, fitting for a developed player)
- Envoy (for the diplomacy update)
- Boron (open the gates)
- Terrans (to strengthen the anti-xenon forces)
- Split (contain the xenon)
- Avarice (central sectors)
- Timelines

I tend to restart every time there's new DLC. I generally prioritise the new content in each game (e.g. Envoy is my primary player ship in my current game, mostly flew Hyperion in the last one), but usually all the previous DLCs are active from game start. Like to have a busy universe with all the various factions doing their thing around me. Just wouldn't be the same experience with half the factions missing. Only DLC I sometimes delay starting is Kingdom End - sometimes I prefer to do the original HQ plot so it's in Grand Exchange.

I think betted will be
1. Hyperion + Envoy + Timelines - that gives much good free ships at start with base game
2. Avarice - central cectors dont give much influence to universe (exept invulnerable ministry station in 18th billion sector), add pirates, not a bad transporter and convenient assembly method

Now it's up to you to decide: do you want a peacefull universe without xenons with a huge save file size or do you want to preserve a part of the universe for the Xenons.
For Xenons grows better will be enable split (+2 warfs and +2 ports) -> terrans (+2 warfs and +2 ports)-> borons (just systems for feeding xenons)
For peacefull lagged universe better will be borons (allied support to arg/ant) -> terrans (fleet raids to xenons systems) -> splits

If you don't want to add the DLCs at game start, the most logical point would be once you finish the Hatikvah plot and have Dal as a resource. He will give you introduction missions to many of the DLCs, so you can now add them one at a time as you do Dal's Missions.

I think the CoH, SV and KE are the three important DLCs to add, as they reintroduce the three missing races from X3. So maybe activate them once you're done the Hatikvah plot and have Dal. Personally, I often skip KE until I talk to Boso Ta, as I prefer the PHQ in Grand Exchange.

The other DLCs are not essential, so introduce them whenever you want.
  • Envoy Pack - You can leave this out if you are not interested in diplomacy; the game was fine without it for almost a decade. But if you are introducing DLCs slowly, it would make the most sense after you have Dal and are interested in manipulating the other factions.
  • Tides of Averace - Adds four new sectors with their own unusual economic and political models. Totally localised, with the exception that there is a tie-in with one of KE main plots, so you might want to activate it at the same time as KE.
  • Hyperion pack - Just gives you a free ship. I guess activate whenever you want a free ship.
  • Timelines - A separate game, so not essential. However, it does seed some free stuff into the Sandbox. If you feel like playing another game in the X4 universe, you can give it a try; it's a nice enough story.

In that case the only and the best anwer is - activate them all.
With the exception of Timelines, they all add something to universe (Timelines add stuff as well, but you need to unlock it in separate Timelines gameplay) and there is no point in having them manually activate in any particular order.

Honestly, I'm bit jelous, coz if you're returning after 5 years break then you will be into one positive suprise after another - the game improved a lot in those years.
