My thoughts on frame generation

Post by Falcrack »

So I just got me a new graphics card, went from a 3060Ti to a 5070. I went to test out the frame generation features in the 8.0 beta that are available with the new card which were not an option on the 3060 Ti. My impression is, it causes a lot of lag. There is a tiny but noticeable delay between when I make a movement and when it responds, which delay becomes more noticeable to highest the frame generation number goes. It's quite annoying actually.

So I feel that unless I absolutely have to have a high fps number and buttery smooth frame rate, I prefer to have it off.

I found you need to have the max frame rate set to multiples of a base figure you would like for real frames.

Thats max frame rate set in both NVidia Control Panel, and in the games new Max Frame rate setting.

So for example (and this is what I set which works really well) ..
I wanted a minimum of 60 FPS real frames (not generated).
Frame Gen x2 setting is 1 Real Frame plus 1 frame gen.
So for a minimum real frame setting of 60;
set Max FPS to 120, if you want x2 Frame Gen.
set Max FPS to 180, if you want x3 Frame Gen.

My Max FPS in Game and NVidia Control panel is 180, as I have Frame Gen set to x3.

Using the in game FPS Counter, it hardly ever goes below 175, even landed at either my shipyard or wharf with lots of modules, and with the map open.

Its always buttery smooth .. but with one exception, being in the near vicinity of big fights, I dont think they will ever fix the game to be good enough on any machine to cope with that scenario. Its a lot better than it used to be but Frame Gen is not a magic bullet for this to totally eradicate the problem.

One more tip, disable that new setting "Dynamic Frame Generation" if you have it set to on, or vice versa and see if that makes a difference. Effect on whether you feel any occasional lag with this setting depends on your machine.

For me I have Max FPS Set to 180, Frame Gen set to x3, Dynamic Frame Generation switched off, DLSS set to Balanced. I also set Texture setting to Low, it really doesn't look better if set to high, and when set to low Egosoft filters by texture type when to load them in. Up close where it counts you still get the full size textures/bump maps.

The new laptop (see spec in signature) doesn't even get warm playing with these settings.

Well, for the time being, this card is strong enough to power through on highest settings with great framerate without frame generation, but if I get to late game and need a few extra frames, maybe I'll give frame generation a try again!

Note that frame generation isn‘t free. The fake frames cost real ones, so they decrease input responsiveness.

This is a good reference to understanding the downsides of the tech:
