Grandmother Mission Reboots Computer.

Post by dpadula »

I have been playing through a new X4 game and when I get to the mission to see Grandmother my machine reboots. I go into the sector where she is located and my machine actually just turns off and back on again. It is almost like the power goes out. No error or anything. System logs for Windows will just say the machine unexpectedly rebooted. There is no minidump file created either by the game. It will only do this for the Grandmother mission when I am in her sector. I have continued to play my save without issue as long as I remain out of her sector. I am running a modded game but I am curious on thoughts around this. I am happy to upload a save but the list of mods is a bit long.

Anybody else experience this type of thing before or have some thoughts on troubleshooting it? I could probably do a new game without mods and see what happens but I would prefer not to have to start a new game.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

No game can, itself, cause your PC to reboot; Windows doesn't allow that. That can only be caused by an underlying driver or hardware problem.

Nobody will be able to provide any suggestions to help you with such a problem without any information to work with. Please see the very first thread at the top of the forum and provide the information requested there, in particular your DXDiag and vulkaninfo.

I have updated my original post with a Dropbox Link to my DXDiag.

Start by updating your drivers. Your graphics drivers are several months out of date, and the sound drivers for most of your devices are even older. I would also suggest going into your Windows event log to see if there is anything there to indicate what triggered the system to restart.

Common hardware causes of unexpected restarts include memory faults and power issues. Try running a memory testing application such as MemTest86, and something like Prime95 to stress test the power supply.

I had exactly the same problem, but not with X4 (highest Version I used is 6.2). But the problem seems to be the same.

I had this problem with Witcher 3 NextGen and Starfield. In certain scenes the PC suddenly rebooted, and it clearly was a power outage.

My PC:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900X (not overclocked)
RTX 3080 Ti (not overclocked)
Power Supply WAS a Seasonic 750 Watts, an older model.

The problem never happened in normal use or while playing older games like Skyrim, Fallout 4 or the older original Witcher 3 game, and others.
So I researched this a bit, and found out, that my graphic card is know for current spikes, very short high spikes which are caused by games. There are a lot of discussions, but since the games run normally fine, this should not be a problem.

What happens is, that certain graphic scenes cause a power spike, not with every graphic card, but a generally power hungry card like the RTX 3080 Ti can cause this.

Next I looked at my PC, and there was the problem: My old Seasonic had enough power, but only 2 outlets/cables for the graphic card! The graphic card has 3 inputs for power, so I used one of the cables with its divider to supply two inputs with power. And this was clearly the problem! I did not know before, that the three power inputs are separated and can draw different current on each. There is a tool, which can show this.

So the solution could have been to distribute this differently, because clearly the cable which I used for two power inputs on the card was overloaded and caused the power supply to emergency shutdown. No damage done, but PC reboots.

My solution: I bought a newer Seasonic 1000 Watts power supply, which now has 3 power outlets/cables for the graphic card (plus the new high current cable for RTX 4xxx cards, which I do not use yet). I used all 3 cables to connect my graphic card, and the problem never happened again.

This probably is not the only cause of such a problem, it could be a too weak power supply and the CPU could draw too much power, but entering a certain scene to make it happen repeatable surely smells exactly like my problem.

I hope this helps others...
