Help : planet covering nebulae

Post by 4fAkt »

Hello dear X-Comunity!
After many years I picked up on the X-Series again (starting with X3TC) and already lost myself to visually enhance the game to my personal liking. My recent efforts aim to achieve a rather realistic look of the (undouptedly beatiful) space landscape of the vanilla game. Changing the textures of planetary surfaces and atmospheres already yields good results. However I struggle to ensure that far away interstellar nebulae are being displayed behind the comparatively close by planets of a system instead of obscuring them.

MY QUESTION:
Where/How does the game store the information, whether a planet is displayed as a foreground feature (obscuring potential background nebulae) or as a background feature (being obscured by said nebulae)?

WHAT I KNOW:
These informations are neither stored in the bob-files of the planet models nor in the TPlanets-files. I am also quite sure it is not stored in the TBackgrounds-files either..

I hope, that there are still some old modders around, who can answere such questions or at least give me a decisive hint :)
Many thanks in advance!

Hello fellow X-enthusiasts!
I still have not found an answer to my previous question, but at least a temporary workaround. For anyone who might stumble upon the same problem as me:

In X3TC 3.4, planets with subtypes/TPlanet indices from 24 to 47 and 68 to 134 seem to be translucent for background nebulae. Using or creating TPlanet entries with other indices will result in planets that do actually obscure background nebulae. So, I will simply copy the TPlanet entries for all translucent planets and moons, paste them at the end of the TPlanets file, change their subtypes and IDs accordingly, and update their subtype entries in the galaxy map file (a simple text replacement script will do).

However, if someone reads this and knows the actual answer to my previous question, I would be eager to know :D !

PS: To any moderators reading this - was my question rather suited for the generic-modding-questions-section of the forum?
