Meh, there were definitely at least some positive changes happening. But you know, going into detail on those would probably take me further off-topic than I've already wandered, so instead I'll just drop the subject, with my apologies. 😅

Following the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Republican South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham's younger sister, Darline Graham, to fill his seat for the remainder of his term, continuing a legacy of family members stepping in to take the reins of power from their kin. She an unelected person who will hold the senate seat until January 2027 instead of calling an immediate election which they should.

Which is curious, as Trump also said that the sister should take his place. But then the sister attacked Trump saying, that she wasn't informed beforehand. If the sister has the job, then Trump would have been pulling strings to get her there.

Well, to us they should. But according to the constitution...
The Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution (1913) established direct election of senators, as well as a means of filling vacant Senate seats. If a vacancy occurs due to a senator's death, resignation, or expulsion, the Seventeenth Amendment allows state legislatures to empower the governor to appoint a replacement to complete the term or to hold office until a special election can take place. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Some states require a special election to fill a vacancy. A few states require the governor to appoint a replacement of the same political party as the previous incumbent. The date when a senator appointed to fill a vacancy is succeeded by a senator elected to fill the remainder of the term depends on a number of factors.
https://www.senate.gov/senators/AppointedSenators.htm

It includes a table of several senators that were nominated and have yet to be elected, as well as the historical outcomes for all (i think within reason). So depends upon South Carolina state requirements I'd guess.

Looks like Lindsey Graham had some skeletons in his past. And seems that Trump might have used that against him. Also, people are now coming out of the woodwork, saying what a horrible man he was. So this story is far from over.

So Steven Miller held a speech again with the usual motives, the left are terrorists, we are the last saviors of a dying America and so on and on. Whenever I see Miller speak I feel like he read De principatibus but did not understand any of the context it was written in and instead just thought that what Machiavelli was describing sounded tough and cool.

By all accounts POTUS' speech today was a waste of valuable oxygen.

Once again, a lot of Democrats are failing to understand what a sea change Trump is and has been. From The Hill:
The Hill wrote:Speaking on MS NOW moments after the speech ended, Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) said he was “embarrassed” that Trump had delivered what Warner called “a whole series of falsehoods, accusations, I believe aimed at trying to undermine America’s confidence in our system.”

“This is not the normal back-and-forth,” Warner added. “If we simply this blow this off as another Donald Trump rant, we do that at our own peril.”

On the other hand, Democrats and liberals seemed gleeful, from an electoral perspective, at Trump’s decision to spend time re-airing his grievances at a time when most voters are concerned about the economy, the cost of living and other more practical concerns.

Dan Pfeiffer, the former Obama aide turned podcaster, wrote on social media that he understood why some of the major networks were not airing Trump speech.

“But from a political perspective I would like this speech beamed into the house of every voter in a battleground district,” Pfeiffer added.
Warner gets it. Pfeiffer does not. This isn't an election strategy in the conventional sense; this isn't about Republicans getting voters to the polls, splitting off centrists with a wedge issue, or even changing the system to favor themselves. This is preparation for flat-out overturning the results of the midterm elections. "Scary scary TRANSGENDERS!" and "Scary scary SOCIALISM!" don't seem to be reaching people furious about fuel prices and another forever war fustercluck. At this point, Republicans have given up on any kind of electoral victory, or even a stalemate. They are laying the groundwork simply to refuse to swear in Democrats, or at the very least to sap their political capital with endless litigation and FUD about "rigged elections."

Oh I dunno, it should clarify to anyone who was still uncertain precisely what is being cooked up with regards to "democracy".

In other news...
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c79gw4lj89eo
Trump Media & Technology Group, which owns Truth Social, is launching a paid service to give Wall Street firms high-speed access to its most influential posts.

From 1 August, instant updates will be delivered from "the highest-ranking" accounts, it said. US President Donald Trump currently has the most followers on the platform.

The company behind the app hopes it will create a steady new source of money for the firm which is currently loss-making.

It is likely to be aimed at financial traders who want to see market-moving news fast. Trump’s social media posts often cause sudden swings in global markets, especially when he writes about trade and tariffs.
I mean; if it includes Whitehouse officials/family messages, then... depending upon just how much faux delay on posting a message is behind-the-scenes fabricated, it sounds a lot like President sanctioned insider information to me. I mean, who gets to investigate if it has been altered to manipulate market opportunity? No-one I imagine :D But DJT as major shareholder will benefit from the profits created from the sub fee.

Not surprised. It makes official/rolls out what I think most already assume happens anyway (just currently its an inner circle rather than everyone who wants to pay).

You're right about its intent.

I would suggest, however, that this is not likely to be particularly helpful to Republicans. By all polls they're about to take a massive drubbing in the Midterms, no matter what they do.

US reaches deal with Saudi Arabi to enrich Uranium with the potential to make nuclear weapons

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/us ... r-AA28tROL

The deal would also allow Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium and reprocess nuclear waste, both of which are potential pathways to making a nuclear weapon. The UAE agreed to forgo both of those when it signed a similar deal with the U.S. in 2009.

A very curious story, i only have german sources, but is that real?

The US Department of Justice is currently investigating US citizen Sam Tunick. The accusation: He allegedly destroyed evidence upon returning home from a vacation at the end of January. This argument could have far-reaching consequences if it holds up in court, as Tunick merely used a security feature of the operating system he was using.......

Kinda, here's Ars covering it (English), guy isa Cop City activist who was put on a terrorist watch list and was pulled in when entering the country.
Allegedly he was asked to provide his pin, and instead gave the wipe code for his Graphine OS phone. As a result the phone deleted itself.
He's being charged with destroying property to prevent seizure.

The case is going to be interesting.

I'm unsure how this ties into a Trump thread as it sounds pretty much like normal policing or border security. Still, two deductions occur to me after the further information:

1. He obviously had something to hide that he was prepared to sacrifice his phone and contents over - whether that was contacts, anti-authority stuff, child porn, or just personal e-mails that would embarrass his or others' families, etc. There's always more to things than apparent in the headlines.

2. You would expect an experienced digital investigation agency seeking evidence on the phone of a suspected activist and conspiracy believer to have some inkling that the suspect's phone might have safeguards, encryption and kill-codes and not to trust anything the suspect provided. Or was it just a normal immigration official trying to get a quick result?

Can think that maybe there's a more nefarious reason, but how can we know. For example, he went on holiday - did he, or was that a "front" on the assumption he's actually a really bad egg, and as the stop on return would supposedly indicate, he was meeting/up to no good :D

My immediate instinct was "what powers do the border control have that police don't" as to why they accosted him at the border, rather than any other time.
One of those is being able to access your phone with no warrant, no probable cause justifications.

There's literally *no* legal oversight of the search/access, it's a freebie - and at that point, I'd understand him toasting his phone.
They had all the time necessary to apply and obtain a warrant to access his phone if they had genuine concerns...

They didn't.

That was a definite *choice* they made. So, why?

Stinks. But that doesn't also discount that maybe the guy is a "wrong'un". Who knows.

To me it'd sound like they had no probable cause, no warrant. So personally, why would he be charged with wiping the phone? They'd need to prove there's an actual valid reasonable grounds / suspicion / investigation (imo). The 'ol "nothing to fear if there's nothing to hide" is outdated. We're firmly in the realm of them being able to download the contents of your phone - photos, conversations, emails, call history, everything. Fairly sure that even the US agencies aren't allowed to spy on their own citizens in the US, so why should this border rule allow them to suddenly do so with no legal oversight / judgement?

But it doesn't matter what I think :D it's the US. But it absolutely stinks. Also, opinions only based on what's read, there may be far more not known.

I certainly wouldn't jump to an assumption that Tunick had something naughty on his phone. He has multiple Constitutionally-guaranteed rights to privacy and security; he is not obliged to be a willing participant in the violation of those rights.

Hell, there's nothing particularly notable on my phone, but I'd do exactly the same thing. I'm a member of a minority the current administration is aggressively targeting, and at the very least they might use my contact list to harass people close to me. I've also worked with law enforcement often enough to know just how frequently someone is willing to "enhance" the evidence just a bit.

Under Trump, there is no innocence until proven, or has it always been the other way around in the US?
My smartphone, my PIN – and privacy!

Where is the evidence he was accused of, like being a pedophile? Dont say it was on his phone only :gruebel:

What comes next, that no laws apply to anyone earning less than $10 million, while those earning more can make their own laws?

To be honest this applies in the Uk Too…

Recently I had the Dwp demand that I send them all transactions on all bank accounts or lose all benefits!

Was I under investigation for fraud? No
It was a compliance check for Universal Credit

Needless to say I did not do that and went and found a job

But I am still hacked off that they cut off everything because I would not give them 5 months of my life and I feel my human rights where violated so I can understand not giving phone data.

Fear not, Citizen! Your Friend the Computer reassures us all that the innocent have nothing to fear! Now... would you kindly submit to a completely optional and very brief urine test, body cavity search, gamma ray scan, and biopsies of your liver, heart, lungs, brain, and large intestine? Please note that hesitation signifies guilt, Citizen.
