Re: Trump Presidency
Feels (via UK based media) like Trump's been a little quiet for a few days. Worried it's akin to a WW2 Doodlebug...

We can take bets:

you left off ending democracy, bringing back segregation, and lusting after his daughter.

Another day another MAGA verse child sex trafficking ring. This one allegedly involves Erika Kirk, widow of recently deceased Charlie Kirk and close friend of J.D. Vance. Honestly these days it seems like a prerequisite to make it in this administration.

Re: Trump Presidency
Trump called an emergency press conference, he is now as of time of writing, 25 minutes late. He probably crying his eyes out and having several diapers changes. (and ketchup on the walls)
Going to be interesting on who he blames, and what he will try next. But there probably no mechanism to do any refunds. Even then, it probably will take a long time to know where all that money went too, even if we can guess where a good portion has indeed gone too.
I wonder how long until all the tariffs get removed? and how much we will see Trump screaming at the GOP if they side against him. This could get very ugly.
Now 35 minutes late.
finally shown up

already saying total BS
Edit
Slurring his speech, and totally delusional, and still claiming he ended wars. What a fool.
Dementia on full display, at times, what he even talking about? and he keeps on repeating words a lot. This man is a total fool, and a near brain dead one at that.
Anyone else watching this? he is totally confused and just rambling now. he still saying he has the power to enforce more tariffs.
Edit 2
He rebuilt the military?

Is he wrong? If I understood him correctly he is basically saying f the supreme court, I don't care, executive is going to execute. I don't see anyone willing to actually stop him from doing so.matthewfarmery wrote: ↑Fri, 20. Feb 26, 19:21 [...]he still saying he has the power to enforce more tariffs.

Re: Trump Presidency
As far as I can tell:
* The president does not normally have power to impose tariffs unless so delegated by Congress, which has not happened.
* Trump used IEEPA as a pretext to bypass the normal congressional rules.
* SCOTUS ruled that IEEPA does not include the power to impose tariffs.
[If anyone's understanding of this is better than mine, please correct me].
So whatever else is going down, I don't think anyone has to pay attention if he throws a tantrum and says "ANOTHER 10%!"
I'll be interested to see what happens.

He is now using an unused law which allows him to put a tariff of up to 15% for a maximum of 150 days, while attacking SCOTUS and calling them names for ruling against him, he never learns.
BBC wrote:Trump signed a proclamation imposing the new 10% tariff under a never-used law known as Section 122, which gives the power to put in place tariffs up to 15% for 150 days, at which point Congress must step in.

I assume that law is a bit less flexible in how tarrifs are applied compared to what he previously did with the 'tarrifs are on, tarrifs are off again'?felter wrote: ↑Sat, 21. Re: Trump Presidency
It has a time limit of 150 days, so if he's trying to get leverage, it's not likely to do anything much.
One question that has been asked: What problem does this actually solve?
(The obvious answer is that it's a way of taxing the US population without looking like you're taxing them).

Re: Trump Presidency
The fact that the law in question requires congressional approval to extend the tariffs over 150 days.
And as it happens, there are likely to be legal challenges against the section 122 tariffs as well. Given that SCOTUS just prevented him from using another mechanism to introduce broad based tariffs, not only does it seem unlikely that they'll let him have this one, I would suggest it is a very strong possibility that before an appeal is brought to SCOTUS, temporary injunctions will prevent them from being enacted.
We'll see; the US legal system can be pretty arcane.

Re: Trump Presidency
Oh, there will be dodgy maneuvers like that.
That being said:
1) Someone will sue to have these tariffs ruled illegal within a very short time (I have already read reports of lawsuits on the way).
2) The courts will almost certainly not permit the tariffs to continue pending cases if SCOTUS has already declared that the president does not have the right to impose tariffs (which, I think, is the big point he seems to fail to grasp - the court wasn't saying that the president went about imposing tariffs the wrong way, it said that the president had to work through Congress to impose tariffs AT ALL). Section 122 is not actually a law to permit the president to ignore Congress, it's a law to provide for emergency tariffs to be imposed whilst Congress is still going through the necessary motions.
3) The big weak spot of tariffs from the president's viewpoint is that they must work through legal mechanisms. He can't simply ignore the law on this. If the courts decree there aren't any tariffs any more, they disappear.

Re: Trump Presidency
Aside from the whiney cry baby orange Hitler, I think the most absurd part of this is Boofmeister Cavanaughty's dissention essentially saying the only reason not to overturn the tariffs would be incredibly difficult to find a way to pay back all of the illegally collected revenue. That's it, that's his only reason for the dissention. Not the legality of it, but the inconvenience of having to give the money back to the people that paid the tariffs.

"The government stole a lot of money, and it's going to be very difficult to give it back. So we shouldn't stop the government stealing money."
It's not a reason for dissent. And frankly it's not the court's problem. It should be along the lines of "You stole the money, so it is your job to make appropriate recompense."
