Reminds me of one of the clones from the cult film - bladerunner, the one in which the hunter's job is to terminate 'boosted' clones/aka replicants who had returned from the edge of space (this likeness does not detract for me) and it could be this is what the replicants were doing out there - it would add a final twist to the tale!
