Compatibility update published for X: Beyond the Frontier and X-Tension

Post by Gregory »

We know how passionately you play our games and how many of you enjoy revisiting the beginnings of the X series every now and then. To keep it that way, we have just released small patches for X: Beyond the Frontier (1999) and X-Tension (2000), which now ensure the functionality of both games on Windows 10 and 11.

We wish you lots of fun with X: Beyond the Frontier and X-Tension!

With ultrawide monitors (3440x1440) these games won't launch. Now X-Tension loads the splash screen then goes back to desktop. (Windows 11)

If I change the Windows res to 1920x1080 they launch fine.

To be fair, the original aspect ratio for those game was 4:3. Even 16:9 isn't real ideal. Not sure if ultra wide ratios would be actually a viable option.

There was a new update for X-Tension published yesterday, fixing issues with certain monitor resolutions.

Also, if you own the disc versions of X: Beyond the Frontier and/or X-Tension, you can now download the new compatibility update from our website:

Was I asking for UltraWide aspect ratio? No I wasn't.

Thanks for fixing it Egosoft.

Hello ... I recently bought X:BTF on GOG, but I cannot get it working on my Asus ROG Z13 tablet/laptop. Windows 11, Nvidia 3050 mobile. When I run it even Egosoft logo after first picture is messed up. I tried all possible setting through F11, but nothing helped. Anyway it runs OK on my Macbook pro 2017 in bootcamp on Windows 10. Do you have any clue?

@ merli: See if anything here helps as Win10 and Win11 are quite similar.

I tried install direcx9.0c, no success. Tried 16 colors .. the same result ... I think something with direct3D, but I am nor such guru to be able fix ir up... I am going to try install X2 if it is better ...

Have you tried running those games in a previous OS compatibility mode? (XP Service Pack 3 might be a good one to start with.)

You might also have to cap the fps while playing them as those games were never intended to be run on such powerful cpu/gpu systems.

Hello, sorry for necroing this thread, but I found the solution to the problem described here:

I actually had the same issue, or a similar issue. In my case, all the graphics were completely glitched out and textures were randomized, and vertices were stretched to another star system. It'd crash after about 30 seconds of this. Since the solution isn't explicitly stated, I figured I'd leave it for others to find if they have the same issue. I really only found the path to the solution by accident anyways.

The problem is caused by your computer using integrated graphics, on the CPU, instead of your video card. You'll have to either specify not to use integrated graphics for X:BtF, and X-Tension, or enter the BIOS and completely disable it, which is recommended, as it just causes a ton of issues anyways. It might not be the same problem, but if you have the same issue as I'm describing, here's the solution. I hope this helps. :)
