No Suitable Graphics Card Detected

Post by Blaine25 »

When I start the game on Steam I get a message that says no suitable graphics card is detected. Will this game just not work for my system or is there a fix for this? Thanks in advance. I have the following system:

It looks to me like your GTX 1650 is sufficient for the task, however the information about it is sparse. Did you re-install Windows or anything of that nature, since you purchased your laptop? I wonder if there is a driver issue.

Edit: You are using the oldest possible driver for your video card. That can't be super good. Please go to https://www.geforce.com/drivers (this is the official NVIDIA driver site) and download the GeForce Experience program under the "Automatic Driver Updates" section. This is a program that will keep your video card drivers up to date, and provides a bunch of nifty features you might want to explore at some point. You may need to create an account with nvidia.

After you have updated your video drivers, try X4 again and report back what happens. Good luck!

Make sure that the game exe is forced to use your GTX 1650 and not the onboard Vega 8 graphics chipset which is indeed unsuitable for the game.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've only the had the computer about a month or so and have not reinstalled windows. I just updated the drivers and restarted the computer. I still get the same error.
The full error message reads.

X4 Startup error

No suitable graphics card detected
Please verify the following:
-check that you have installed the lasted graphics card drivers
-ensure that your graphics card is supported (X4 requires at least an NVIDIA GTX 780/970 or AMD equivalent)

Exitcode 212

Thanks again, but I still haven't got it to work. I tried changing the filename to X4.exe -gpu:2 but it won't let me type ":" into the file name.

Hmm, maybe try a space instead of a colon? Or check this.

'-gpu:2' is a commandline parameter, you add this in steam as a launch option. if you use gog galaxy then (if they don't support launch options):

"You can also add this same setting in config.xml in the games settings folder:
Adding:
<gpu>0</gpu>
in the root section would be default, any other number would fix a selection."

EDIT:
<gpu>2</gpu> in your case

Yes, sorry. I didn't notice that you were changing the filename and not the command line.

Well I wasn't able to get it to work in the cmd prompt, it kept saying that x4.exe is not a recognized command. However, I was able to make sure that the better graphics card is selected by going through Display - Graphics Settings- and selecting x4 for high performance. Unfortunately though, the game will still not launch.

From the DxDiag for your GTX 1650:
  • Current Mode: Unknown
    HDR Support: Unknown
    Display Topology: Unknown
    Display Color Space: Unknown
    Color Primaries: Unknown
    Display Luminance: Unknown
and all of these DxDiag entries for it are totally missing:
  • Monitor Name:
    Monitor Model:
    Monitor Id:
    Native Mode:
    Output Type:
    Monitor Capabilities:
    Display Pixel Format:
    Advanced Color:

The Vega 8 onboard graphics chipset has all those values set up. It looks very much to me as though your GTX 1650 is not set up to recognise or work your laptop display so you probably need to go into Windows and set up your display devices and then maybe update/reinstall the driver. There may even be a hardware connection problem with it, but I hope that is not the case. (I'd be very surprised if it is just X4 showing graphics problems!)

Blaine25 can you please describe the physical connections between your computer and your monitor? What I mean is, are you using the built-in monitor on the laptop or do you have a cable plugged into the laptop, leading to an external monitor or tv set? Maybe both?

Ok lets do two experiments.

First, take note of exactly which hole at the back of the computer your HDMI cable is plugged into. Observe if there are any other HDMI holes you could use instead of the one you are using.

Does the built-in monitor on the laptop work ok? Try unplugging the HDMI cable and running X4 ONLY on the internal monitor.

Then, after you determine if it works or not on the internal monitor, try plugging the HDMI cable back in, but use a DIFFERENT hdmi port on your laptop, if possible, than the one you used before. You can keep using the same port on the monitor-side, that doesn't matter.
