X4 Player Logo Collection

Hello

Since release I was about to create a custom logo collection and with 3.0/Split Vendetta releasing it feels like a good opportunity to do just that, so here it goes.

I have already a few made based on popular Sci-Fi shows/franchises so I'll upload those first and will expand this as I find inspiration to do more, I'll post here every time the list is expanded.
If you like one that is not here feel free to point out to it and I might add it at some point.

The files will be uploaded to google drive in a folder that allows you to either download all at once or single files.

Installation
Download the files and place them in \Documents\Egosoft\X4\{steamid}\logos if the logos folder does not exist just create it.
Logos will appear next time you load a save game in the Empire tab in the player info menu.
Each logo has two files the actual logo file and a _glow.tga tga that adds some effect when looking at the logo in the shadow. The glow is not manadatory, if you dont want it just delete it from folder.

My pleasure. Just added standard glow map files to all logos in case anyone wants that, if so just DL the *_glow.tga file and place it in same folder.

This "just" adds an effect to the logo when you look at it without "direct light".

Galactica is no problem I might even have some stuff arounf from mods of the past, more agressive split I will look into it and see.

And yes, the Hand one is quite large. I did not want to delete the detail. On small ships you don't really see it but on L ships up to stations you get some very crisp detail.

Added a BSG logo I had lying around and an attempt at something Split with some aggressiveness, not great will have a go at another time.

Also added Tycho Station logo from The Expanse

I created one for the Young Gun start for Val Selton (It was designed to be glowing, for that you have to copy the image and add the _glow suffix to the filename):

I've been using Sabine's Logo so I edited it a bit.

Gave it a facelift with the colors from the show. Sadly I tried but can't help with the mirroring on ships as it is done weirdly in the game.

I like the Emblem and V4, the others with the noise backgrounds I'm not a fan. I'm from the "less is more" school of design and as such would always suggest to go for simple though clear designs instead of ones that put things on top of other patterns, that usually leads to clutter and is a detriment to the idea behind a logo, which is to convey something as straightforward as possible, while being identifiable.

Yeah, in real world logos must remain identifiable when they get much smaller, get turned black&white...
In this case only the first works because it's a unique shape (but the small details on the lower two parts shouldn't exist).

Ketraar's signature logo is a good example. You could take the KET part and it would still be recognizable (as very small, in B&W). It's the unique part in that one. Industries part is semi-useless and wouldn't work alone since it's not distinct enough typeface (ok it actually is but would require enough repeated sightings). If industries-logo would have to be made, the first three letters of it could be made unique similarly as KET now is.

I suggest practicing with minimalist restrictions. For example one letter + specific colour. It's challenging but very possible to make an identifiable logo based on that, just by selecting a suitable typeface (font) and then what kind of feeling you want to evoke with the colour choice. Some colours like yellow/red are dynamic, green is eco/money etc, blue is calming... The typeface is ultimately still the far more important part since it could appear as black&white.

As a graphic Designer myself I prefer the two last ones.
Though making the logo distinguishable in any given scenario is paramount in "Commercial" Logo making, who can tell (and see) the fine lines of some parts of the "Coca Cola" lettering from a distance? It's just that the logo is so established that our mind fills the gaps!!!
The "obvious" choice both in lettering and design would be representative of what the company of the logo is about.
Be ready for RL disappointment though. My experience (over 25 years) tells me that if the graphic designer does only one sample the customer will reject it and if more are made the customer always chooses the one the designer hates!!!

EDIT: I'm sending you the link for some of the logos I've made and use in the game feel free to use them (especially the "Teladi" one is rather hillarious. For record purposes my company (when I had one) back in Greece was named "Guernika Laser Typesetting" so I use "Guernika Laser Teleporting" in game(!!!). Guernika might seem too "aeristic" and "elitistic" but the truth is that I returned to my office after spending 3 frantic days in it preparing and then running to deliver and then falling asleep in the taxi that was taking me home (my x-wife told me so when I managed to wake up after some 32 hours of sleep) and what I saw was the picture of Guernika (the city) with the last German bomber slowly vanishing in the horizon!!!

Dude too soon! That still infuriates me the most. Also when you try to "update" designs to be more with the times but then people want 1984 style stuff in Times New Roman... :headbang:

Using very established logos as example is not really good, since if you are making a new one you don't have the luxury of decades of brand recognition. More often then not in my experience the brand name is what holds a logo back. Anyway dont want to derail this more then needed, so my last advice is to start doing stuff that feels good then expose them to the world and evolve from that.
