How many do I need. The description says they have something like 3KM range which seems rather short.
Also, do I at all need them if I have autominers?

You don't *need* any, but they are moderately helpful for finding mining sweet spots (autominers will do what autominers do, they don't care about probes). There is also one type of mission you need them for. So I'd say 5-10 is a nice number to stock up to
