Is trading with the revamped dynamic economy fun?

In X:Rebirth I experienced utter frustration as I tried to buy fusion reactors in Buried Treasure to build the plot station. They are produced in batches about every 15 min, and they were gone from the station making them in mere seconds. (I did try to find alternates means of "acquiring" the goods, but this post is about pure trading.)

This makes me hugely skeptical about the dynamic economy in X4. It's all well and good to masturbate about all the CPU cycles being spent simulating every ware going around, but in the end this is still a game and it has to be fun and somewhat player-centric.

So, how does the game deal with resource shortages gameplay-wise? Does it cheat to ensure you can get at least a minimal amount of the stuff you need, or is it possible to reserve resources even before they're produced (Preorder Simulator 2018)?

Before someone brings up the realism argument, they removed time limits in missions in X Rebirth (and I believe X4) because they were frustrating for players... even though it's way more realistic for missions to expire at some point, or even for the competition to race you to finish the same mission and reap the reward in your stead.

My memories of trading in X games:
- X2: Fun. I made most money by finding resource shortages in the BBS articles and bringing stuff there, or looking around for missions to sell my existing cargo at a higher price.
- X3:TC: Ok, a bit harder to turn a profit from my memories, had to go with large volumes.
- X:Rebirth: setting my actual alarm clock to rush to the Trade menu and get the wares right as they're produced. Watching YouTube videos in the meanwhile.
- X4: ???
