X3 Reunion - Crash on targeting issue

Post by Le Roo » Mon, 24. Dec 12, 12:34

I have a problem with X3 Reunion ver. 2.5 running on Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The game was purchased and downloaded from Steam and has not been modified in any way. The problem is similar to others already posted and occurs when playing in the Simulator – Combat Test Level 1 (I have not tried any other game options yet). Every time whilst playing this level if I switch the target a few times using the ‘Home’ key the game will crash with the following error:

Code: Select all

“X3 has stopped working – A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.”
The windows event log reports the following:

Code: Select all

My system has the following components:

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770K
Board: MSI Z77A-GD65
Memory: 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680
Sound: ASUS Xonar DGX

I have read that sound can be the major cause of this issue, currently I have the on board sound disabled in the BIOS. In device manager I have two sound devices reported as active:

ASUS Xonar DGX Audio Device
NVIDIA High Definition Audio

Any help in resolving this problem will be greatly appreciated – here is my DXDiag report:

There have been numerous reports of crashes caused by Asus Xonar drivers, so the very first thing to try would be to disable that device completely and see whether the problem goes away. If it does then sadly I'm afraid you'll either have to use a different sound device or join the fairly lengthy list of people waiting for Asus to do something about their drivers.

Other common causes of crashes when changing targets are codecs (though you don't seem to have any of the known problem ones) or mods (but you say you don't have any installed).

Thanks for the reply CBJ. I did a quick test - from Device Manager I disabled the Asus Xonar card then tried to run X3 Reunion again. Now I'm not sure if just disabling the sound card in device manager is as good as removing it completely, but it did leave me without sound  , however it did not stop the game from crashing when I use the 'Home' key to switch targets. Do you think this test was good enough? I also tried changing the processor affinity so that the X3 executable only used 1 CPU, but this did not change anything either.

My memory brought 'HsSrv.dll' to mind. I think the sequence is, do a search for all instances of HsSrv.dll, rename them oldHsSrv.dll, then see if things work. I think it had something to do with the way EAX was/is handled by the Asus drivers. You can always undo the name change if it does not work.

Thanks Terre. I tried renaming the HsSrv.dll files, but this did not change the status of the problem. Also, I turned off GX option in the Xonar DGX Audio Centre, but this did not change resolve the issue either :(

I had another look around the forum and found a couple of other things to try.

Firstly I turned down all the graphics settings to their lowest and tried playing the game, but it still crashed.

Secondly, I tried minimizing the monitor window - the little window in the top left corner that tracks the ship you have targetted. This stopped the crash from happening while I was switching targets so this could be an acceptable workaround for the moment - I assume the monitor window is not crucial to gameplay? Also, does this shed any more light on what the problem might be? I can provide further information from the event log or dxdiag if you think this will help?

Thanks again for your time :)

Just another update, although minimizing the monitor window seems to work for the Simulator levels, it does not work for the Normal game. After starting a normal game and going through the scripted bit at the begining you are dumped at a gate - for me it always crashes at or shortly after this point :(

In the mean time I also changed my BIOS settings so that I only was only running on 1 core and Hyper Threading was turned off. For me this did not fix the problem, but I read that some people have had success with this.

You don't have the ASUS Gamer OSD installed do you? This too has been known to cause problems.

I agree with CBJ ...Asus Gamer OSD does cause problems...that is if you have it installed. It took me quite a while to figure this out. To bad because Asus SmartDoctor gives an error if you don't have Gamer OSD but with Gamer OSD it crushes the X3 game.
Many forget that isn't the good they want,it is the purpose of that good.
