X3 reunion saved game files in platform switch

Post by kmiller1610 »

My new computer says my saved game files are corrupt.

Old platform: XP Pro, P4 2.53 ghz, Geforce 6600 AGP

New Platform: XP Pro P4 2.8 ghz, Nivdia 7800 AGP

Using version 1.4.03 of X3 reunion

Versions match and the program recognized the saved game files until I started loading them.

Help?

Did you by any chance forget to install some scripts or mods you used in your saves?

Nope it was a clean install. My guess it that it doesn't like the difference in video drivers. The 7800 is a big jump from the 6600. All of which sucks, if it's true. Ahhh the baloney they fed us when we left DOS and moved to Win95.....

X3R or X3TC?

Drivers won't matter in terms of saves being corrupt. Are you sure your previous version was 1.4? That's very old even if it's TC.

@OP, Having you tried updating Reunion to a more recent version?

And though I'm not certain in this case, a DXDiag report might be needed.

I like the game before all the new ships, so I installed it just before the add-ons. I had played the game through 5 or 6 times using more recent patches. But that was with a previous install. When I did this intsall, I intentionally stopped patching at 1.4.03. It was a total reinstall of the hard drive. I do have all my saved game files from previous games and they did have scripts, but I don't see how that could have affected anything.

I'll try switching video cards. The machine is new and I have not made a huge commitment to it yet, but this is the first game I wanted to try, my alternate life: X3....

If your saves had scripts in them and your new install is vanilla then your save games are incompatible.

No. The game state is the same on both machines. No scripts on source. No scripts in destination. The saved games with scripts in them are from previous installs and stored in a separate area on the hard drive.

Unless I can find some different information, I will try switching video cards.

So what saves are you trying to use?

I am trying to get the save game from the source machine (vanilla installation) to load on the destination machine (vanilla installation).

Refer to the first post in the thread for descriptions of the machines.

So here's what I tried today.

I went to the destination machine, started a new game, transferred the save game to the source machine and it loaded with no problems.

If the installations are somehow incompatible, why would this be the case?

I have decided to reinstall the destination machine. I think I may have installed the patches in the wrong order. Of course, this makes no sense...

However........

Both machines say 1.4.03 April 2006 in the autoload screen.

But once you load the games,

the source machine says 1.4.02

the destination machine says 1.4

I am fairly sure I skipped one of the incremental patches in the destination installation.

I also tried downgrading the video card in the installation machine, so that didn't help.

And that fixed it. Apparently, I had applied the final patch prematurely and had skipped a small, incremental patch.

Thanks for listening. Glad I could help myself.
