CTD with Exception code: 0xc0000095

Post by TomWilson »

I've been having the same issue for quite some time now and have been avoiding a technical support request.
I can not reproduce the issue with a specific event, it can happen after 1 minute or a few hours.
My save is a modified terran defender start, yet the issue occurs with a clean unmodified start.

I've Reinstalled the OS
Tested different versions of CCC
Tested different versions of the realtek sound driver, purchased a sound blaster x-fi (which I thought cleared up the issue, there were no ctd's for a week)
Updated directx
Reinstalled X3TC (X3TCUpdate1.0.1_to_2.6.exe > X3TCUpdate2.6_to_2.7.exe > X3TCUpdate2.7_to_2.7.1.exe > X3TCUpdate2.7_to_3.0.exe - All downloaded twice for CRC)
Hard drives are error free, memtest (wall time over 18 hours with 0 errors) prime95 (over 12 hours) and intelburtest (50 pass standard)
Registry is free from stray keys and i've not installed any obscure 3rd party codecs

Fault offset is always at the same location 0x000d2beb (2.7.1) 0x000d2cab (3.0.0)

Thanks for any assistance
Tom

If you are using some form of ALchemy-like application to get surroundsound and EAX with TC and your X-Fi or onboard sound then that is probably your problem. ALchemy is and always was unstable with TC. I use my X-Fi with speaker layout set to 4.0/4.1 for TC and have disabled ALchemy for TC.

Wow, you sure did run some tests there...

It's difficult to hypotesize about what the problem could be...
A couple of things that come to my mind are the patching process: was the starting version a 1.0 and not a 2.5 (gold edition), for instance?

The other thing would be the script editor logging option, which gave me a problem somewhat similar to yours (CTD, but because of inflated savegames), even though it should require a long amount of in game time to manifest itself.

Oh, and I really doubt that this could be the problem, but since you installed/reinstalled the Catalysts so many times, there could be old bits and pieces lying around (sometimes Catalyst seems not to uninstall cleanly, leaving parts of the old drivers around).
If you want to double check for it, you could use driver sweeper.
(Codec sniper for a list of installed codecs, just in case...)

Good luck.

Not sure if that was a question... Yes Terre 95 is a int overflow.

I don't use EAX with X3TC and my system is set up for 2/2.1 I only use headphones.

I own the original 1.0.0 DVD (it came bundled with a video card) however I could not locate the registration key for tech support and purchased a gold box and have reinstalled both to be sure... Now I own 2 copies of x3 and x3tc... :)

My save games 15MB (is this standard?), logging is off.

I use driver sweeper/ccleaner and gspot.

Heh, if I were you I'd buy the superbox too
No, seriously, I asked because the gold edition (which comes with both reunion and TC) comes with TC prepatched to v 2.5, so if this is the version you have installed, you should follow a different patching route than the one you reported in your first post.
BTW, it looks like they updated the patch download page: now there are only three downloads... it may be worth a try.
"X³: Terran Conflict 2.0 -> 3.0" for the gold edition version, I guess...
TomWilson wrote: My save games 15MB (is this standard?), logging is off.
Yeah, that's fine. Mine had reached like 120 Mbs :)
TomWilson wrote: I found the following post today and I think it could be the same issue... [...]
But that's a reunion issue... and the OP said it had to do with targets switching.
I somehow doubt that it could be the same... even though it does have the same error code (but I think integer overflow is as generic as they come...), and besides, it looks like the OP there didnt' get any suitable answer after all...

Another reunion 95 error code seems to be here, and the OP solved it by disabling the sound card...
Actually, if you do a google search like this, you'll get several hits, while limiting the search to "terran conflict", they drop to 6...

I'd echo de la Serna's suggestion to try disabling the sound card entirely. If this stops the crashes then you've at least narrowed down the cause even if it's not, in itself, a long term solution.

The only other thing I can think of to suggest, since you've been pretty thorough already, is the possibility of a problem with the PSU. Power problems can have very peculiar symptoms and can also be hard to track down and test, and of course this is a purely speculative suggestion anyway.

Does anyone know if you can get the "300 page X-Encyclopedia" on it's own?

I have read that post (and a few others like it) and did try uninstalling/ccleaning the realtek sound system and the HDMI ATI driver along with disabling the Azalia codec in bios...
CBJ wrote:Power problems can have very peculiar symptoms and can also be hard to track down and test
It's a brand new Corsair professional HX850W power supply, I normally run a hybrid ATI/Nvidia system and have ran the OCCT power supply test pushing both video cards and cpu. I removed the Nvidia card when I reinstalled the OS, the power supply is not an issue. However your right it could be an obscure hardware issue and I do want assistance, I will loosen my ram timings and restore my original front side bus speed.

I was able to enjoy over 4 hours of crash free game play last night when I stopped using the monitors to track targets, however I still cant force the issue to happen with specific events.

I'm disappointed with the lack of technical support regarding my issue...

I've started a new vanilla game invested a month into it and have started crashing again.
It has nothing to do with the target windows (monitors) as I previously thought. The last two crashes were during combat when PBG's were used.

I would like to request that someone with technical expertise from egosoft review this thread.

Yeah well Egosoft (a company of less than 20 employees I believe) have an army of people just watching Tech Support to resolve your problem...

In your last post you said you were going to do some things but you never provided any further feedback on the outcome of making those changes...

To be honest the tech heads in the community and CBJ (from Egosoft who haunts this forum the most) are scratching their heads as to what the problem could be. It does seem to be an obscure and unusual one.

Ok so what has changed in your system since then? An updated DXDiag would be good to start with please.

From your OP I notice your system is reasonably overclocked. I wonder if it's possible that the CPU is getting itself into a pickle? X3TC is known to be CPU limited and it is probably pushing the core it is running on quite hard.

What's the CPU temp?

What happens if you revert your system to it's stock settings and timings?

The system when overclocked is stable and never over 50°C (Q9550 Tcase = 71.4°C) however it has been at stock core and ram for the last month. The only changes to the system since the last diag are updated ati drivers (and ccc has been replaced with tray tools)...

The game was operating great for the last month, today I stated the OFF plot and added some PBG to my Hyperion Vanguard and after doing so crashed twice...

... didn't mean to sound like a kha'ak in my last post ...
just a bit frustrated.

Did you actually use the PBG and then it crashed or just install them?

I'm beginning to wonder if the video card is having a hiccup...

Did you say you have an Nvidia card? What happens if you install it and the latest drivers? Left field suggestion I know but maybe worth a try...

I swapped out the HD 4890 for a 4870 (against my better judgement) the results remain the same.
The issue can not be reproduced with specific events, the BPG just increases frequency of said event.

A complete shot in the dark.

Does your Karaoke software have video playback facilities, I'm just wondering if a third party codec is bumping itself up the ranks and getting in the way.

The "CT Karaoke filter" is part of the X-Fi software package, I let it install everything (it's a bloated mess I need to clean up).
I didn't even know there was Karaoke on my system... I better uninstall it before my wife finds it! :P

Unfortunately the issue was present before the X-Fi card was installed... Terre if you think of anything else your help is definitely appreciated, as is the suggestions and input from everyone else.

---

So let me rehash... I've started a new game (vanilla v3.0 w/ BP v4.1.01, USC Commander) with no problems for a month (768-05-07 6-13:49)... got some credits, capped a few gooders', equipped my Hyp-V with PBG's and just started the OFF plot... combat now includes flames and gamma...

I found a few other newish posts that may be related.
- x3tc stürzt neuerdings ständig ab (Translated: X3TC crashes recently declined steadily)
As far as I can tell this is the exact same problem...

- Switching Targets Crashes the Game
It's Reunion but something tells me this is a related issue, and I don't think it's just sound related as Crashing X3: Reunion would suggest...

- Lock-up wjth Kestral and Turbo Boost (Event log and dxdiag)
Intriguing... it's the same fault offset with unrelated events.

Fault offset 0x000d2beb (2.7.1) / 0x000d2cab (3.0.0) I wish I knew what was going on here... offset load address? absolute? why that address?
There are too many places the overflow could originate... target acquisition, damage calculation, object transparency, etc... Hardware, drivers and codecs all appear to be fine so I will look into software dependencies.

DirectX
- X3TC root folder version is: 9.22.949.2248 (d3dx9_37.dll originally D3DX9D.dll) modified 3/5/2008 - 3,786,760 bytes
- Gold edition dvd contains the same version within Data\ as does SysWOW64\ ... DirectX should not be an issue.
Libiconv
- X3TC root folder version is: 1.9.0.0 @ 888,832 bytes 10/25/2003 - On the DVD there is a different one @ 892,928 bytes 1/14/2004 and still states v1.9.0.0 ... Strange but whatever should be fine.
Jpeg library, ImgSource, Zlib compression and xml management all have updates out there that may improve performance... whatever all fine.

I converted the Soundtrack: Windows Media Audio 9.2 - 48 kbps, 44 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR (current install is still using this) when the issue started I did try a few other things like... (btw the wife is out of town for the weekend, and iben'drinkn' so this post, yeah) I tossed all the s\ audio through sox with V, r, a few %% added some bass and set all the lasers @ 22.05 and 3D/SFX @ 44.1 fixed a few audio headers and ended up with a hell of a lot better audio performance with no skipping or stuttering (not using this currently *** unMODIFIED ***), but it still crashed, so I busted open editor 2 and changed effect 172 err 179 (Plasma Disperser) and the gamma reduced some particles yadda yadda yadda didn't help...

It would be so nice if the source for the x3 engine went public, I bet it would be pretty easy to toss some AI activities at another affinity, maybe even a full on redux...

Might as well throw in a chunk of the latest log, who knows someone may see something?!

I remember sometime back when de-bugging a beta, that renaming the 'd3dx9_37.dll' would stop it crashing on some machines, it may be worth a go.

That is something I was looking into last night however after searching I discovered the following.

Yes, thats correct. If you remove the d3dx9_37.dll from the game folder, the game will look for the same dll in the windows directory. It will not use other other d3dx9_*.dll files.
I'm testing the new ATI 10.11 driver (ATI Stream SDK v2 driver suit), I don't expect any issue resolution from this driver but it sure is a nice change for all the ATI users out there... 10.11 release notes

I seem to be having the same problem, although with far less technical expertise to fall back on. I updated my video card drivers. Same issue. I've installed a new sound card and downloaded the most updadted drivers for it. No dice. I uninstalled anything with a codec and have the same result. I removed the d3dx9_37.dll from the game directory and still the same problem. I even just completed a full hard drive wipe and OS install so my computer is as clean as it is possible to get. After updating all of the relevant drivers, installing the game and bringing it up to 3.0 + bonus pack, I reload my saves and:

Faulting application name: X3TC.exe, version: 3.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c447143
Faulting module name: X3TC.exe, version: 3.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4c447143

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\EGOSOFT\X3 Terran Conflict\X3TC.exe

I hate to clutter up these pages, but perhaps my DXDiag will help anyone working on this so I've included the 64 bit version. I love this game, and am actually paused in the middle of a DID thread as a result of this. I hope someone can determine what the issue is and help to remedy it.

Unfortunately Scion I don't think we should expect any resolutions forthwith (or technical support/expertise from egosoft for that matter).

I have not entirely given up on the game, I've not played in the last month but I do still check the forms every week or two.
During the holiday I added more ram and replaced my WD Raptor with a OCZ Vertex 2 so I may set up a dual boot with XP x64 (on the raptor) just to see how the game reacts with my hardware under XP...

For some reason I am reminded of the movie fight club...

Take the number of vehicles in the field (A), and multiply it by the probable rate of failure (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement (C). A times B times C equals X...
If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Scion one bit of advice I can offer ...Salvage Insurance... every few minutes during a battle...

EDIT: Oh snap, your the pirate story guy...... Love it, man that's a good read! I mean for real, epic read! Nice work!!!

Hi guys, I get exactly the same problem.

I note I have very little in common with either poster except that all three of us have Radeon cards (mine is HD 5700), and both the first poster and I also have the same Razer keyboard though I am fairly sure its a graphic based issue. Certainly considering my reasonably high end rig the game performs noticeably slower in busy areas than on my old (much slower)machine which did not have this issue, though my old machine had a different graphics card. The game crashes are more common in areas with a high poly count, particularly dense asteroid fields. Targeting window open also implies its a graphics issue. I can provide DX and system info dumps if required though I doubt they will be helpful.
