not going to put on win 7 again and not format for a very long time i think even if the beta is better than vista.

This happens in Vista with old securom games (lotr battle for middle earth, for example), and the fix was to run the game in compatability mode not for xp, but for windows server 2003. And you also had to give yourself full security rights fot the game (one tab over from compatability, click on your user account and give full control).

The problem sounds exactly the same, but the solution probably wont be.

Thank you all, I'm patiently awaiting TAGES response so I can try once more, hopefully with the right "tweak" this time. :)

Windows 7 compatibility

Post by yuranduran »

Hello everyone,
I have an issue with starting X3TC on Windows 7 64-bit. It seems like Tages doesn't recognize my original X3 DVD (game fails to start with message "Insert original disk...". It works fine on Windows XP, so I haven't any doubt about my disc. Any emulation soft like Daemon Tools or Alcohol doesn't present on my system.
Did anyone was able to play X3:TC on Windows 7? How it was possible to you?
Thanks in advance.

Windows 7 doesn't currently have compatible TAGES drivers. TAGES are aware of the situation - when they'll release drivers for Win 7 is anyone's guess though. Note that this problem only applies to the DVD version - the steam version should be fine on Win 7.

I don't know if this is right but I will put this question anyway. Is a trick known to make the drivers compatible(run as administrator, compatible mod, etc.)?

Until now the only problem, for me ,with windows 7 is that this game doesn't work on windows 7.

Has somebody tryed with older Tages drivers?Maybe will work.

not to my knowledge... try it and see :)

but don't hold your breath... this is why you don't run a beta OS on your main machine

I've merged the recent posts on Windows 7 with the main thread on the subject. Please read back if you haven't done so already. :)

@amtct, currently i can get no games that use TAGES to run, even from ones from a couple of years ago I have even tried running the Tages64 setup file in compatibility mode and as administrator , it doesnt work. So only thing we can do is wait for TAGES to release an update, which i doubt willl happen before the RC is released, (but this is only speculation on my part. Only Tages can know when they will actually release a compatible driver). However the steam variant which uses online verification, apparently runs nicely, and if other games are anything to go by there will be a nice performance boost when TAGES do support Win 7.

For those that are interested it appears that the RC1 of Windows 7 may be appearing early April, While Microsoft are officially saying 2010 for RTM of Windows 7 ,Unofficial Rumor puts it maybe as close as Sept. 09.

A Microsoft official on Radio 4 last week stated second half of 2009... so September might be a good rumour...

i didnt pay good money for a protection system to not allow me to play regardless of os , if tages and egosoft got their finger out there could already be a fix for people who want to use the software THEY LEGALLY PURCHASED on Windows 7 , its funny all the other stuff i play runs even stuff as old as 2001.

You didn't "pay good money" to play on Windows 7 because that's not a supported platform for the game, just like MacOS isn't a supported platform for the game. You paid for a game that stated that it was for Windows XP and Vista, and that's what you have.

TAGES are already working on support for Windows 7 and will no doubt have it working well before the final release version, though neither the copy protection nor the game will be fully supported on that platform before then. In the meantime, if you are running a beta OS then you should also have a "live" OS environment for your real-world applications, so you should be able to play the game just fine.

Now, this is the second time you've tried to turn the discussion of Windows 7 into a discussion of copy protection. I suggest you drop the subject, or risk having further posts removed and locked so that others can continue to discuss the specifics of running the game on Windows 7.

I don't know what you're all whining about - Windows 7 x64 here and it works perfectly. I've had zero issues with TAGES or anything else. Didn't have to do anything special, just bought the game from Steam as normal.

Yes, as already explained, the online-activated version of TAGES used with the Steam version of the game works fine. It's the disk-check version of TAGES used on the DVD version of the game that doesn't yet work.

Hope this problem will be resolved ASAP as I'm now Windows 7 x86-64 Beta tester too and I have the same problem as explained above.
BTW I don't think Microsoft will modify the way how kernel works with drivers in Inter-Beta Phase (Beta, RC) so it's time to start coding the drivers as it'd be competitively fine for Tagès to be the first to support W7.
