Ok, I got my boxed retail copy of TC today and am just playing through the tutorial...
When it comes to destroying some debris, i go to fire and alas, it seems i have no weaponry.
Am i just being stupid?
Tutorial help...

No, you're not, you're just a humble merchant.
The tutorial was designed for a fighter character. It has little use : it just makes you dock at a station, grab cargo and shoot containers.
You can skip it.
Besides, do not wonder if there is a scenario for the humble merchant. There is one, but by the time you stumble upon the first mission, you will certainly be filthy rich and experimented.
If you want a guided start, choose the terran or argon defender scenarios.
