Julian ran into the main hangar, his blaster pistol drawn. Five armed mercenaries on GSS payroll ran in behind him, each carrying a modified Argon Carbine. The lead mercenary came up behind Gardna, covering the area directly in front of him. Julian lifted his pistol up to the same height as his eyes, holding the grip with his right and steadying it with his left. He stepped into a tense combat stance and moved quickly across the hangar to the nearby Argon Buster stood on support struts near the main entrance. Julian stopped by the Buster and took cover behind the fuselage. He leaned out and looked down the small gap behind the ships lined up along the wall for maintenance. Nothing. He moved back into cover and glanced across at the mercenaries. He held up three fingers and pointed in the direction across the room from him towards the Argon Nova Gamma 1, where Jo had been working earlier. Three of the mercenaries nodded and moved off towards the Nova. The other two he signaled to move down the hangar towards the currently sealed bulkhead at the end of the large chamber. Julian himself then moved out of cover and slowly made his way down behind the row of ships lined up against the wall. He led with his pistol, covering all of the notches and possible hiding places before him. Stopping half way down the line of ships, behind another Buster, Julian looked around him. The cables linking the buster to the wall were dangling low out of their moorings and were smoldering gently. Upon further inspection, Julian saw that the cables had suffered a blaster shot. The plastic coverings were melted and the metal of the wires fused to one another. Any lose ends sparked gently, fizzling in the still atmosphere of the hangar.
He removed his comm from his belt and flicked open the channel he had set before, linking him to his mercenary employees.
“Halla, anything?”
“Negative Mr. Gardna, theres nothing here”
“Sturn?”
“No boss, no sign of anything alive”
“Thanks guys”
Julian flicked the comm shut and returned it to his belt. He turned and sat down on a power cell feeding into the Buster, pressing the muzzle of his blaster pistol into his right temple.
“Damn it” he cursed under his breath, pressing his eyelids shut. After a few seconds, he stood and composed himself. He returned his blaster to its holster and made out for the open hangar to rejoin the mercenaries.
“Come on guys, back to your duties, false alarm”
The mercenaries nodded and lowered their weapons. The mercenary leader signaled to his men across the room and the five of them began to walk towards the main entrance. Julian stood in the centre of the hangar, looking around at the lines of fighters. Some were in pieces for repairs, some bore vivid battle scars along their lengths.
Narrowing his eyes, Julian unhooked his comm unit from his belt once more.
“All right Jovi, you want in on the action, you’ll have to move quick” He flicked open the comm unit and dialed the number for the Bridge.
“Bridge”
“Gardna here” Julian said “Is Captain Rider on the Bridge?”
“No I believe she returned to her cabin sir”
“All right, thanks.”
Julian closed the comm and began to walk towards the hangar bay entrance. He dialed another number and brought the communicator up to his ear.
“Yes? Dr. Torrik, have the plans for The Mole drawn up in neat and begin construction as soon as possible”
Alright, considering the fact that I havn't posted in yonks, here you go. But thats it for today! I am trying to revise for my AS Levels here!!!
Julian strode into the research lab and crossed over to the group of technicians gathered around a table.
“Sorry to have you work into the night shift guys, but something’s come up which has changed a lot and we really need to press on”
“Its all right” Dr. Hal Torrik addressed Julian directly from across the table, looking slightly disheveled as if he had just woken up.
“I appreciate your work Doctor” Julian nodded and walked across to a console set into the work bench opposite the table. He booted it up and waited for it to load, staring through the port hole at the revolving stars outside. Revolving.
“Wait a second, has any one noticed anything strange in the last few minutes?” Julian asked suddenly, turning to the group of techs.
“No sir, why?” Torrik asked, looking puzzled.
Julian frowned and looked at the revolving image of space through the port hole again.
“I’ll be right back” he said, turning for the door. Torrik could just look on in wonder as Julian left the room as quickly as he had entered.
Julian turned right down the corridor and made for the lift shaft at the end of the section. He passed several techs hurrying to the lab he had just left on the way who stopped and looked at him questioningly. He just nodded at them and told them to carry on to the lab. He reached the elevator and stepped inside, flicking the switch to close the doors and activating the voice recognition system.
“Bridge” he said, fast.
The female voice chimed “Confirmed” before the doors closed fully and the elevator shot off into the bowels of the ship.
Five minutes later, Julian stepped onto the Command Deck of the GSS Samarkand. He walked across to the command chair and leaned on the rail in front. The Bridge was at yellow alert and everyone was too busy at their stations to notice that their employer had entered the room. One Ensign at the helm finally noticed Julian and turned around to register him. Julian raised his eyebrows at the mans post, which showed the ships thruster vectors displaying an uneven pattern leading back across the last eight minutes.
“Whats going on Ensign?” Julian asked, indicating the screen.
“Sabotage sir.” The Ensign reported, seemingly unphased.
“What” Julian’s tone darkened.
“Eight minutes ago, someone manually tampered with the starboard thrusters, sending the ship into a spin. There is no long term damage done, but the saboteur fired all of the thrusters at once, frying the retros and depleting the fuel cells. I’m afraid we’re stuck here sir, for the moment at least”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Captain Rider is on her way now; we were just about to contact you when you entered the Bridge”
“Yeah, I saw the spin from the science lab on deck three”
Julian turned to the console behind the command chair and brought up a miniature schematic of the ship. He adjusted the view to show energy and saw for himself that the whole starboard fuel cell network for the ships maneuvering thrusters was black; signifying no power.
“We managed to rectify the spin sir, but it used up most of the other fuel cells. It’s going to take a while for them to charge up.”
Julian thought for a moment before turning back to face the Command Deck.
“Comms, where is the Truax?”
A young woman sat at the communications console tapped at her keyboard for a few seconds before turning to Julian.
“Getsu Fune sir”
“Right, call her here; tell Jamieson it’s a matter of dire importance. Also, Captain Archer should be back on board the Agamemnon now, send him a message saying I will be contacting him on a private channel”
“Roger that” the communications officer nodded and returned to her console. Just at that moment, Jo Rider entered the Bridge, looking refreshed and wearing her command overalls displaying her rank of Captain. Julian nodded to her as she entered.
“Good, Jo, I was just leaving, you can handle things from here?”
“Yeah, Jules, what happened?”
“The Bridge crew will fill you in, I have to go. I’ll talk to you later” He smiled and took her hand. Squeezing it, Julian looked into her ice blue eyes for a moment, before releasing his grip and turning for the door.
And...ahem...its Dark_Angel, I had to put RS at the start because the name was allready taken. It stands for 'Rheinland Sentinels' but thats another story that doesnt belong here. And to be frank frank, I cant be arsed to go into it.
Nice read DA. I've been inspired. I might come along with my own story soon. I started writing a X story a while ago but never put it on the boards. I'm going to start anew as I don't like my former story.
Excellent read! Only just caught up with the last two installments. Nice suspense in the hangar and cool idea for sabotaging the ship. I am curious to see what the purpose is.
Gillian Sherwin entered the quiet Seminar room and looked around for Julian. He was stood across by the window, staring out into space. An image of Captain Grant Archer’s face hung suspended above the wide circular table.
“What is it Julian” She asked, taking a seat by the face of Captain Archer. Julian turned to face them both, a grim look on his face.
“The situation has worsened, we have a SpaceTech spy on board and I have no idea who it could be. The only people I trust right now are you two and Captain Rider.”
Sherwin looked too shocked for words. Archer seemed to take the news better however.
“Do you have proof of this spy?”
“He shot at Captain Rider in the Samarkand’s hangar bay and later sabotaged the ships starboard thruster jets. This ship is going nowhere.”
“What do you propose we do?” Sherwin asked, looking from Archer’s face to Julian.
“I’ve ordered the Truax to move to our position immediately. If she gets here in time, we will be able to shift the plan ahead of schedule. I already have my team of techs working on constructing the mobile drilling device we have for accessing the asteroid. I was thinking I dock it with the Truax and then we jump through to the Unknown system, with the Razor and the Agamemnon flying cover.”
“Didn’t you say something about creatures that eat metal composites?” Archer asked inquisitively
“Yes, that’s why I’ve ordered the Xanatos to be covered in this plastic film substance out science teams have developed. Truax will take us up to the fringe of the nebula and then drop the drilling vessel, which will be picked up by Xanatos and flown into the nebula and to the asteroid. I will personally lead the team. I need the Razor and the Agamemnon to defend the Truax out in open space. Can you two do that for me?”
“Shouldn’t be a problem” Archer smiled and nodded, the large holographic image of his head bobbing up and down.
“Yeah, we can do that” Sherwin agreed. “The Split will probably send probes through first. By the time they realize we already have a large task force in there, the task will almost be complete.”
“Good, I’m leaving the Samarkand here, and taking as little personnel off her as possible so I don’t get that spy with me. The last thing we want out there is sabotage.”
“Agreed, when do we take this plan into effect?” Archer asked.
Julian looked at him directly. “As soon as the Mole is designed and built and the Truax gets here Grant, until then, we wait.”
“Roger that” The image of Captain Archer faded out and left Julian and Captain Sherwin alone in the seminar room.
“A SpaceTech spy Jules, really?”
“That’s what Jo said”
“My God!” Gillian rocked back in her chair, running her hands through her hair.
“I want you to keep your eyes open, look our for anything suspicious”
“I will Julian, don’t worry”
“Good” Julian turned and walked for the door. The door slid open gracefully and he stepped outside and turned into the corridor, leaving Gillian inside pondering on what she had just heard.
Good read! So Jules is trying to trick the spy. I guess one of the easiest ways to find out is to call for volunteers and then not take any of them because the spy is likely to be among them. Little he can do if left behind.
You have my most sincere apologies. I am a busy man you know!
The GSS Xanatos was a Teladi Osprey, a vessel bought by Julian many years as added muscle ago for his solitary excursions across the Universe. Back in those years, Julian couldn’t afford to support crews, so he simply had the Xanatos kitted out with an A.I. system that allowed it to make tactical judgments and control its self as efficiently as possible. As Julian always preferred to fly in his Nova; Alpha one, the Xanatos usually rode shotgun, able to eliminate anything hostile that came in its path. At this moment in time, the Xanatos sat precisely 100 meters from the Samarkand with a small army of technicians in space suits drifting about her hull lazily. Each technician held a hose connected to a portable canister and were covering every square centimeter of the ship with strange transparent foam. The foam seemed to pile up on the metal surface of the Osprey before melting into a wafer thin sheen that solidified and added a strange glint to the M6. Commander Victoria O’Brian sat in her command chair playing a Teladi card game with her five crewmembers.
“I suck at this.” She said in resignation as her ventral gunner, Mik Harlson won for the fourth time in a row. “Thank God I’m not a Teladi; just think how my mum would be pretty pissed if I lost a gambling match!”
“We didn’t place any stakes.” Callum Duponte commented as he gathered up the cards.
“Thank whatever Gods there are.” Victoria laughed as she stood up and stretched. “Hole Sonra how long have we been sat there?”
“Around a Stazura.” Duponte replied, shuffling the cards.
“Jesus that long huh?” Victoria asked absently as she watched one of the space suited techs drift by the main screen, spraying the plastic substance across the plasteel of the window. “Well, I’m gonna go hit my bunk for a while. Get some sleep before Gardna calls us up. Julianos, you have the helm.”
“Roger that Ma’am.” Her second in command, a Teladi named Julianos Laertis IV replied from the command chair on the raised platform above the two other seats at the helm.
Turning around, O’Brian headed off the command deck and into the small staging area behind that lead to all the other compartments of the ship. She turned right and moved around the dorsal turret access ladder to get to her quarters. The automatic door slid back into its berth as she stepped across the threshold. She sprawled out across her bunk and yawned just as the communicator rang. Sighing, she punched the node in the wall and a small holographic image of Captain Archer of the Agamemnon appeared.
“Commander O’Brian, I’m not interrupting am I?” He said, his burly face filling the holograph.
“No sir.” Victoria said, sitting up on her bed.
“Excellent. Mr. Gardna has a mission for you.”
“You have the details?” She asked, retrieving a hairbrush from her side cabinet.
“I do indeed. He wants you to fly the Xanatos through Rhy’s Desire and into that new system so you can map the Jump Gate area and transmit the coordinates back to the fleet so they can jump through without having to traverse the Split system.”
“Yeah I think I can pull that. What’s the mission ETA?” Victoria ran the brush through her hair several times and then returned the brush to the side.
“Two stazura from now, eh, Mr. Gardna will be joining you.”
“Ah, I’d best put my best dress on then huh?” she chuckled.
“Hah, yeah.” Archer agreed. “Just be prepared, he’s being fussy about the whole plastic spray business, expect him to go inspect it personally.”
“Will do, thanks for the heads up.” Victoria cut the link and lay back on the bed. So the boss was coming across to supervise the mission personally? That means he sees this as a pretty damn important assignment.
After thinking on the matter for several moments, Victoria decided to go round up her crew and set them straight. After all, Julian probably wouldn’t like Teladi gambling on one of his ships in a crisis like this.
Like Phoenix from the ashes! Hey, good to see you back, mate!
Wow, that is going to be quite a trip. Travelling by foot through the system to the gate in a tub like the Osprey is going to take an age and a half. But I guess it is at least armed very well and with no supporting ships around they will be able to use PSGs in case of trouble.
The Teladi Toucan cut her engines and came to a stand still a few meters away from the Xanatos. The exterior hatch on the vessel’s starboard side emitted a series of escaping puffs of gasses from the hydraulics before the door slid outwards and along the side of the hull. Two bulky space suited figures exited the TP class ship, attached to the interior by long umbilical cords that acted as their life lines out in space. Neither of the suited figures supported propulsion units and simply kicked off from the hull of the Toucan in order to drift across the gap to the larger Teladi Osprey. It took them approximately two minutes to travel from one ship to the other. As they reached the Osprey, the lead figure lifted his arm up and back down again, signaling to the Toucan pilot. The two life cables came free of the Toucan and the TP began to rotate around back towards the Samarkand. The dorsal hatch on the Xanatos swung silently outwards and another bubble helmeted figure drifted out, this one in a propulsion unit. The two figures from the Toucan bounced across the hull of the Osprey and greeted the third space suited figure before dropping into the Xanatos and out of sight.
Julian Gardna let the airlock seal above him as he clomped into the oxygenated main staging area of the M6. He released the catches on his helmet and lifted the large plasteel bubble from its rests on his neck ring. Jo Rider lifted the space suit’s torso up and over her ample figure as Julian sat down on his large artificial behind.
“We’re getting good at that.” He joked as Jo stepped out of the bottom half of her suit.
“No, I am, you’re still as slow as a Demeter when it comes to getting undressed.” Jo said in return, shooting him a sly glance. He smiled and shook his head as he wriggled his arms out of the suit’s matching limbs.
“Steady on love, let me take you out to dinner first.”
“Don’t flatter yourself.” Jo grinned as she removed her jumpsuit and cast it aside. She wore a plain white vest with her utility belt about her waist and a regular pair of black slacks. She gathered her suit and stowed it skillfully in the correct compartment before turning and walking through onto the command deck. Julian removed his torso and then clambered out of the suit’s legs. He was in the process of removing his flight suit just as the airlock hatch slid back open and the third space suited figure clambered down through the gab in the ceiling. The large humanoid lifted up and released the catches on its helmet before removing the bronze tinted bubble. The face of an attractive human female in her youth met his eyes.
“Lieutenant Baker, it’s good to see you again.”
“You two boss.” Lieutenant Stephanie Baker nodded as she clomped across the room towards a terminal set in the wall. Her short mop of dark hair bobbed as she swayed with her steps. Baker was a strong, hot headed turret gunner who was one of the best shots in all of Argon space, excellent at forejudging the movements of an enemy fighter before they moved. Julian had recognised this at an early stage and assigned to his top exploration vessel straight away. She was an attractive individual, with a strong sense of what was morally right and a deadly turret hand. She had the important role of dorsal gunner on board the Xanatos; the turret with what was arguably the best angle of vision out of all of them on a Teladi Osprey.
Julian deposited the parts to his space suit in the locker next to where Jo had stored hers and moved into the command center. The command section was similar to most other M6 interiors, only this one was laced with stocky Teladi design. Commander O’Brian sat in the command chair next to her second, Julianos Laertis IV; the young Teladi male Julian had hired in Teladi Gain. Julianos was a skilled freighter pilot and had a lot of experience under his belt to say he was relatively young. He had always favored a more militaristic career to his regular slow trading lifestyle and to the dismay of his mother, had taken Julian up on his offer to join Gardna Space Systems as an escort Corvette second. Julian was fond of the Teladi and he knew that Julianos eventually hoped to command his own M6, but Julian would only grant him permission to command one of his other Corvettes when he knew him to be ready. For the moment, the young hot headed Teladi had a lot to learn.
Julian stretched and made his way up the access ramp to lean on the rail separating the raised platform from the lower consoles. Commander O’Brian was engaged in conversation with Jo and Julianos was looking at a dataslate of possible trajectories through Rhy’s Desire.
“Alright people, I want to get this mission under way as soon as possible, so if we could run through preflight checks I would appreciate it.”
“Way ahead of you boss.” Victoria smiled as she looked across at him. “We’re ready to go on your mark.”
Impressed, Julian stood back and regarded O’Brian with a calculating look. “Okay, lets get underway then. Head for the Rhy’s Desire Gate and don’t expect a warm welcome.”
“Don’t worry Jules, we’ve got it covered.” Victoria sat up and thumbed the internal intercom switch on her chair arm. “Alright all crew members to your stations. That includes gunners.”
Her voice echoed throughout the ship and immediately everyone stopped what they were doing and headed for their duties. The ventral and rear gunners left through the door into the staging room and the pilot and navigations officers sat down in their seats at the front of the sloping wall of the command deck. Julian and Jo stood up on either side of Commander O’Brian and watched as she ordered the ship forwards.
The GSS Xanatos’ engines hummed to life and began to power up. Within seconds the ship was gliding forward on low impulse and picking up speed. Julian knew that the ‘Mole’ construction time was still predicted for another 72 hours, giving him ample time to get through Rhy’s Desire and into the unknown system. His biggest worry was the Split system. He had not included any escorts in his mission plan, for fear of their lives. He had lost too many good personnel all ready and he was not about to sacrifice more needlessly. A lot hinged on this mission and it was imperative that the Xanatos survived. He was confident however that his ship would be able to withstand what the Split threw at it, with 375 mega watts of raw shield energy and a balanced range of weaponry from Hornet missiles to Gamma HEPTs and Beta PSGs, he hoped that the Xanatos would be able to fare well against attacks from multiple fighters. He hoped to avoid the capitalships, as the Split would surely have reinforced their defenses now and would be ready for a full on capitalship invasion. Feeling nervous for the first time in a long while, Julian gripped the steel railing on the command deck of his Osprey, praying to whatever Gods there were to look down on him and give him their strength…
