+1 for Samsung TSSTcorp SH-S223F DVD-RW.

Waiting for TAGES to reply, but since their website has no technical FAQs and denies any problems, they clearly couldn't give a toss so I'm not holding my breath.

Disabling Autorun doesn't help, but I can get X3:TC to run if I keep taking the DVD in and out of the drive until it stops going mental (repeatedly speeding up and slowing down). Not ideal, but at least I can play!

I have spoken to TAGES recently and am assured that there are no known problems with drives other than the Toshiba HD-DVD model, which is caused by a fault with the drive's firmware. If you do not here from TAGES within 24 hours of emailing them then try emailing again for a response. Do also check your spam filters to make sure their replies are not being binned.

Also having trouble with SH-S223F DVD-RW. Infact it broke my first one, rendering it unable to read DVDs at all, and although the replacement struggles on i can't help but feel its going to pack up the ghost sooner or later.

It also struggles with fallout 3 though so maybe its something to do with reading dual layered dvds?? i'm not really sure.

TAGES are claiming that my drive must be damaged (surprising, since the game installs fine and I've had no problems with any other programs), so it looks like I'll either have to buy another drive or repurchase the game through STEAM. Grrrr

Hmm, sofapod's post makes me think that maybe my drive IS the problem (assuming Fallout3 doesn't also uses TAGES).

Time for a new DVD drive...

Tages havent even bothered replying to my email and now my DVD drive will only read CDs and not DVDs. Thanks a lot.

Edit. You shouldnt have to be buying a new optical drive just to play a game. People complained a lot about starforce but Tages is far worse and it caN suck my balls for all I care. I cant even watch DVDs since buying Stupid Terran Conflict.

Indeed I have to agree that Tages is making some problems. A while since I've used any other dvd now, but suddenly I have big time problems reading other DVDs. Now I just tried installing C&C3 TW and it would barelly read the dvd and not even manage to install it. But CDs like Call of Duty works fine..

I have a Samsung - SH223Q on aVista 64bit (sp1).
This all started after I got X3TC

It is highly unlikely that TAGES (or any other copy protection system for that matter) is actually causing your problems. Drives can and do stop working sometimes, and it's easy to blame the copy protection of whichever game you last installed without any real evidence that the two events are related.

If you are having problems with TAGES then contact their support people as outlined in the sticky thread at the top of the forum. If you don't get a reply within 24 hours then try again, and check that your spam filter is not filtering out their replies. If you still don't hear from them then PM me and I will try to chase them up for you; I will need details of the dates and times of all the emails sent and the address they were sent from.

Chalk up another SH-223Q death on Vista x64.
Worked fine this morning.

FedEx delivered X3TC this afternoon which installed fine but said I didn't have the disk when I tried to boot it up the first time. It ended up running once after taking the disk out and putting it back in but since then my drive reads nothing. Not the game and not anything else.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, uninstalled and installed the newest TAGES drivers, newest firmware, up to date drivers for the drive itself, autoplay set to "take no action" for every possible action (tried it the other way too because I had it off by default) and all the drive does correctly now is open and close the tray.
Oh, and flash it's seek light.

For the record, I run a dual-boot Vista64/XP Pro system and the drive is dead in XP as well.

Very unimpressed.

Information forwarded to TAGES support. The clock's running.
