Who need shadows? No matter how powerful rig I have I always switch off or reduce them to minimum coz they are FPS killers and nothing really useful.

The only games that I used shadows are the ones that made them practical like Thief series.

Edit:
1. Lip sync for aliens in the videos when they speak or is it like old?
Why do you need lip sync for aliens that don't even have lips or have completely diffrent mouth than humans, so they could make same sounds with completely diffrent face/lip experession?

Sigh dx9 meaning no native multi core support and no multi gpu support.
What's next requires steam and/or constantly on internet connection?

shadows make HUGE difference in the way you perceive a game. Just compare shite gamebryo graphics with the second witcher.

I have to say that after X2 I lost interest in X games, X3 and TC just offered more of the same, I did not feel they really brought anything new to the gameplay and actually found them less fun. Yes there were improvements like the interface and graphics but this was let down by crap economy, over complexity and needing to devote endless hours to the game before you actually got anywhere.

Now I know that my last three negatives are actually positives for many of you. But for one I am glad that Egosoft is actually bringing out something new rather than the same old game in a prettier package.

As for not being able to fly 300 different ships, meh. Don't really care, in X3TC there were only ever 5 or 6 ships I really flew, and of them probably only 4 regularly. It sounds to me like you get a similar choice in Rebirth - your own ship which is customizable (cool), 4 or 5 different drone types you can fly (cool), and sounds like improved control of fleets (cool).

I do have reservations - NPC interaction was never a strong point of previous X games, and it sounds like you are really tied to the plot to progress or customize your ship.

Though if the plot is fun rather than frustrating, then I don't really have any problems with that.

DX9? No problem with that at all, the scenes I've seen look pretty damn good.

The more I hear of the game, the more I am looking forward to giving it a go.

No problem, you're doing fine! and thanks for the info, seeing most of the video clips in one place is easier for me to get a grip on the overall picture. ..Ta! :D

I agree 'pixel', I'm also looking forward to the new game. DX9?....does seem strange that :?
Perhaps including the latest DX is or was going to be too much extra work, in the time frame allowed for development?
Oh!, and yes, I hope the animation of characters has had a complete new facelift as well, here's hoping
edit...But most important for me is...whether the game is FUN to play, so I'm not too concerned with loosing the older X game content, other than the build, trade, fight and explore themes. If they're still in the game, (which i believe they are), then I'm happy. The game had to move on imho. so goodbye dust and cobwebs...lets hope Egosoft have had a good 'spring clean'.

This is the playership

Here some trailers and animation concepts from the gamescom 2011.

Known facts Confirmed by Bernd Lehan

There will be only one Playership
Ships are modular you can attack every section like Engine Shield or Weapons
You can go into a room behind the cockpit
You can Control Drones by using a 3d optical Interface

The game uses DX9 not DX11

Sorry for my English but i want to let you know
"there will be only one playership" does that mean, that we only can fly that single ship (the player ship), or does it mean, that we only can possess one "directly steerable" ship at a time?
(not like in x3 reunion when i had a whole bunch of ships and decided which one was fitting in my undertaking.)
cheers
Z.

I couldn't care less about wether it is DX9 or DX10....

The reason I still play X, is that the series was always fun to play

All these new games seem to have 90& development time for graphics and 10% for control, story and concept.

Any body remember the old days of Monkey Island and Leisure Suit Larry????

Those games were fun to play and you had to think about what you do, not like most of todays game are only like "hey look at this beautiful graphics, so lets take a gun an hold the left mouse button until this level is over...."

the more info gets released the more im disappointed. i planned to buy the game as soon as it was released, now im not even sure if im going to buy it at all.

it has absolutely nothing to do with the other X games, they should have picked a completely different name.

oh and LOL @ DX9, so much for "this is the biggest step our company has ever done".

Everyone has taken this "room behind the cabin" to mean walking around their ship. I suspect a button that say Go To Room, which will jump direct to a static background image with whomever is in the ship at the time represented.

For those who say don't care about DX11, DX9 is good enough, maybe you need to actually see some DX11 effects. Then see how DX11 is far more optimised to take advantage of current generation hardware.

"Current generation hardware" is not what the majority of people uses.

I really support then trying to make the game playable in as many systems as possible and we, not having to fork out extra money to play the game. I find it frustrating that after one year and a half of expending more than a month of my salary on a system, I can not play the games in top settings, because is easier to use more resources than to optimize.

I don't care how you 'walk' around the ship, it should be fast. If an alarm rings when something happens, I want to be back in my command chair fast, and not looking at an animation of someone taking a seat while my property is under attack....

Hi guys. I'll update the "what we know about X:R" thread tomorrow hopefully. Don't mind posting to the forum from my phone but there's no way I'm gonna start trying to do that (including editing the posts & setting up the quotes & links) from a poxy iPhone :p

Sli and crossfire work just fine in dx9, thank you very much. quad sli, not so much.

dx9 games can be multi-threaded, multi-core.

dx9 is fine.

a whole bunch of whiners

after all this years of x games egosoft knows what they are doing and what players want, they have this whole forum for it :)

as for one player ship GOOD, as stated its because develeping is so much easiers and so much more easy to modifiy

I bet the game is going to be awsome in so many ways, and espacialy when moders start clawing into it

drones are totaly awsome for tacital reasons as well is micromanaging fleets
with NPC interaction

you probably have captins and such so in a large fleet battle you can destroy a ship with the captin inside so the whole fleet loses a lot of tactical knowledge because the command is taken over by the closest ranking officer and he is not that good as the caption, maybe he is a pussy and a global retreat is the only way he knows :)

or maybe the caption is on some of smaller ships so you have to find him first with your spydrones o scannerdrones then destroy him

thera are 100 ways to do thing just as before, now they actualy function and are not implemented poorly

dont know why so much negativity over this game, after years spent on this forum all I can say is **** YEA!!!!

I was wishing for a whole new game/engine since x3reunion and now that its coming i cant play x3:tc anymore because all I can think is how its all going to be better in rebirth

A good name you have there Buzz! Seems right for you!

Big thanks to Whiteblade and Dietger for their input, you guys are marketing it better that Egosoft!

Ok some of my fears laid to rest, the sandbox options were very important to me, so its good to know its still important to Egosoft. I will be very disapointed with just 20 hrs of play!

One question about the DX9 thing; does the Xbox use a version of DX? :gruebel:

I think the wonderful modders are going to be even more important with rebirth.

Does anyone know just how big the universe will be in Rebirth? It sounds as if its going to be much smaller?

The 360 uses D3D9 with some D3D10 features, or so I understand.
EDIT: Incidentally, the original XBOX was named such because it was built around the DirectX API.

DX9 is perfectly capable in modern games (though I admit D3D11 is exciting from a technical standpoint), and has next to zero bearing on whether a game supports multi-core systems.

I'd be willing to bet the decision was made to develop a D3D9 engine because:
A) The Egosoft team have a wealth of experience with D3D9 from the old engine.
B) Research may show that a large portion of their target audience uses D3D9 graphics cards.

If you design a game using D3D9, users with strong systems can have all the graphics options on for the best visuals, while those with older hardware can turn off some of the effects and still have an enjoyable experience. An engine that uses D3D10/11 only, means anyone who doesn't have a capable D3D10/11 graphics card, simply can't play the game. Either they have D3D9 only (which is getting less common) or they have low-end or early D3D10/11 cards which just aren't up to the task at satisfactory resolutions. I'll take 1920x1080 D3D9 over 1024x768 and tessellation, any day.
