Do it slightly differently myself. Agree on the low approach angle - do tend to aim to approach from the side (rather than straight down towards the landing pad). However not at all keen on the slow part. I lack the patience to do anything other than a full speed approach & often fly the last bit upside down so I can see the landing pad more clearly (particularly in ships with bits of the hull that obscure the bottom 1/2 of the screen). At least 50% of the time I'm approaching the landing pad from entirely the wrong direction. None of that seems to matter - have had remarkably few issues with the docking computer. Every time (no matter how reckless I've been flying on approach) it manages to level out my ship & turn it round, if I was indeed approaching from the wrong direction. Probably does a better job of it than I could manage myself!

Aah, I'm see it now, you are trying to make a fast "emergency" landing. With M ships, you need to approach slow and low for auto-docking. The easiest is to stop over the bay and descent. When you are enough low, the auto docking with be triggered. Indeed that with S ships, you can approach faster. But in both cases, S or M, you need to be OVER the landing bay.
But keep in mind, that enemies can continue shooting your ship in the landing bay. The good news are that this will trigger the station to respond to the fire as long as it isn't of the same faction as the attacker.

Games done some great things but it literally lives upto it's name "Foundations".
It's got the foundations set to be a great game, just needs more content and balancing then we can have something to really contest with X3.

As for Equipping ships? Please do consider changing the prerequisites of what the ships need like full turrets, Shields etc.
It just doesn't make sense building a Carrier/Destroyer/Frigates with no weapons on them.
All you would need is to increase the reward money, to subsidize all the new additions you would be adding to the ships which will cost you more in resources to provide.. It would better reflect the new prerequisites.
I feel really passionately about this, it's one of my favourite missions, or would be if you can build fleets for a Faction to help them win the war and those ships take part in it. Would be excellent to watch them fight and feel, you're playing a part in that Factions War.
