I dont think you have to start again, a lot of peeps are well up the promotion ladder and have huge empires (like myself)
BUT, I am seriously considering starting again for the 1.4 update, as I would like to build my empire in a different way (possibly a mining empire), and also now know which sectors are the best for trading.
With no offense to your scenario building skills, Apoch, (you have to work within the confines of the current engine and game features) I'll believe THAT when I see it. Right now the only thing an Osprey needs to remotely be concerned about is a Khaak M2... and Xenon Trawling (flying back and forth through huge hordes of 60 or 70 xenon fighters in formation around a M1 and watching two or three surrender or explode violently as PSG detonations blast the entire cloud) has long been a way to raise combat rank.
I've captured Xenon 472 and Xenon 534 sectors. I've a lot of factories there. If a Xenon Invasion starts with the new patch I'll have to build a strong fleet so defend that sectors.....
Oh Ancients help me please
Sometime we called them Gods
Later we called them Angels
Today we call them Aliens
They are our Fathers
Hence the disclaimer that I'll believe it when I see it. As the weapon and ship balances stand right now there's no way even a dozen M2 can threaten a player. If changes in 1.4 make it so attacking a Xenon sector in a Bayoman or even a Nova is suicidal I'll be quite happy... but as long as PSG work as they do currently I will remain a skeptic.

But the three hundred ships that got 'critical errors' in their navigation calculations and slammed into bases, asteroids, or simply spun in place until a Goner ship crashed into it (ahh.... spaceweed....) weren't free... at least they consumed resources to rebuild.
Surprises breed whining in games. A lot of people complained about the hidden changes (undocumented) in 1.3 ... why wouldn't they do the same in 1.4... especially since it appears to be changing even more things.

It's gonna be good, and I'm looking forward to it...
But I'm sure as hell backing up my TShips, TBullets, TCockpits, TRockets and TLasers before I install 1.4.
You should too.
Call me a Paranid or just plain paranoid, but I feel that a MASSIVE nerf bat is about to be swung, and the results might just be less pretty than you'd like.
Using PSG and strafe I am certain I could beat a dozen, yes. Especially in a M6.
Osprey would do it fastest, probably, but Nemesis would get it done. A Perseus would be a challenge because there's less room for error due to the lower shields but it should be possible. I'm guessing I could SURVIVE against a dozen in a Bayoman but I admit that lining up and killing a M2 with the APSG would be a very dangerous thing to do, as one second of sustained fire from the PPCs would destroy a max shielded Bayo.
M2s are too big to engage against even numbers of enemy M2s. Take way too much damage and are too expensive to repair. It would take a small targetting profile to pull of a battle against a dozen... and a bit of flying so that they were hitting each other in the crossfire couldn't hurt, either.
The biggest reason why people are able to trounce M2s is because the AI sucks at fleet coordination.
One on one, I can beat an unlimited number of Khaak or Xenon M2s in my Osprey. Quite easily I might add. But, when AI (once in a blue moon) decides to coordinate its ships, it's a different story. When you have two Ass Blasters chasing you, you better be hitting Shift-J faster than you can say "Bluish Snout"... No matter how quickly you fire your PSGs, your shields won't soak up the damage from concentrated fire.
Big ships have their place in big COORDINATED battles, when more damage is being thrown around than even an Osprey can soak up. The name of the game here is to take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Which is what a capital ship does best.
