Flak is the only new one currently available.

It looks like there are 3 other weapons in the works but currently not available...
  • Railgun: Ultra long range S/M gun which cannot turn, so locked onto facing of ship.
  • Some sort of charging gun weapon. Possibly like the one from XR.
  • Cannon: Data points towards this being a gun form of Flak.

Toughest and most heavily armed M freighter. Has reasonable speed as well, only beaten by Paranid freighters.

If you can find a use for such a freighter currently I do not know. Supplying stations in hostile space maybe? Maybe with the up coming pirate mechanics it will make more sense. Until then it seems better to use conventional freighters and have them drop cargo to pirates rather than duel them.

You can buy the muon charger and the railgun, they're teladi and paranid weapons respectively, they're available from their docks.

It is EXACTLY the sort of ship I'd choose as an early game player-flown freighter.
Significantly faster than either Tern or Vulture, but still has a decent cargo capacity for it's class.
Would also have far fewer concerns about potential hostile encounters than if I was flying either of the others (1 fixed gun mount + 2 turrets > 1 turret).
That fixed gun mount is also invaluable in some non-combat situations (lockboxes, shooting mines, etc) so significantly increases usefulness for certain missions (again compared to the other Teladi M freighters).

I’d get a Demeter Sentinel for that role. Not sure about usefulness of weapons for a freighter, getting away from hostiles with superior speed is better. Don’t care about lockboxes.

Still, nice to have some variety.

by the time you reach that point in the early game, would be objectively better to stick to the usual Nemesis than this.

Nemesis, really?
When I'm looking for a general purpose early game M freighter to fly myself Nemesis is pretty much at the bottom of the list of suitable ships.
You are aware it has by far the lowest cargo capacity of any M ship? It's practically useless for my purposes.
Guess all those guns are nice to have but for me in the early game a decent cargo hold is absolutely critical.

Sh1pman's suggestion of a Demeter Sentinel has far more merit, as well as for evading hostiles high speed also has a strong bearing on the profitability of early game trading.
However, Cormorant's main gun still VERY tempting, primarily due to it's utility for completing various missions that are effectively impossible for ships armed only with turrets.
Like to do missions in the early game as a means to improve rep as well as to bring in the credits.

cargo? 5 M guns + 2 M turets on a Nemesis make more Cr. and reputation as the bigest cargoship...

Then you clearly playing the game differently. The boring and dull trading task I leave it to the AI. I make money by fighting and boarding ships. For that, I need a decent M ship. And Nemesis is the best M ship.

Glad at least some people see use in this ship for its role we had in mind.
The model still has some smaller visual issues which will be fixed before 3.0 goes live.

I really hope that Egosoft will do much more such "kitbashing" post 3.0. X4 needs more ship variety as well as adressing the issue that many ships use default stats for missile/drone/deployable storages...making them looks like copy/paste.

Its really great for players that want to do space trucking but still want to open those lockboxes they find along the wayand still have at least some combat capability.

Now we need the Hyperion :) M luxury transport ship, with an external S dock. Fair combat capability, fair cargo size (like 6000?) 3 turrets and 1 main gun :) Very good shielding and super expensive.
Perfect player ship, that isnt OP. Then add mass npc transport missions, like the marine transport from AP (or even workforce?).

Maybe Egosoft will get a taste for it and sell shipbuilding plans for real money as DLC in the future, have heard that others are successful with something like this

While you're at it, should introduce refitted L ships for pirates. It would be amazing to see a Marauder Helios with extra M and L turrets

Decided it might be fun to try out the Cormorant & see just how good it is as an early game ship.

To do a proper test started a new game, flew between Ministry stations until I had the rep & then immediately bought a low spec version (all I could afford at the time). Since then been using it to haul cargo, do missions, etc while progressively upgrading it. Frankly it's been a wonderful little ship - not perfect but ticks all the right boxes as a highly versatile ship for the early game.

Has proved to have sufficient cargo capacity to be worth using as a freighter & (one thing I'd overlooked in my initial appraisal of the ship) that cargo capacity also makes collecting salvage MUCH more viable. In the past I'd just leave it there. Would have taken dozens of runs to collect it all in, for example, a Peregrine (my early game ship last time). Cormorant though can hold several 100k worth - reckon so far must have collected salvage worth at least around a million or so. Has probably been one of my more profitable activities.

However that did bring me into conflict with the people (primarily SCA) who created that salvage in the first place & they seemed a mite displeased with me hoovering it up. However Cormorant does have guns & so far they've proved effective for light combat, e.g. against a handful of fighters & the odd SCA Minotaur Raider. Current armaments are Beam mk2 main gun + pair of the new Flak turrets (bit short range, but damage is decent enough & provides a very pretty light show).

Have recently completed the PHQ missions & have started tinkering with Cormorant's subsystems. Only basic mods so far (still waiting for my 2nd Cormorant to return from it's Venture, hopefully with something better), but they've been enough to offset some of it's imperfections - Polisher chassis mod to increase speed & handling, Twister engine mod to further improve manoeuverability (at cost of reduced strafe) & Mistral weapon mod on the main gun (increases cooling & reload, though with reduced damage), theory being when you've only got 1 main gun perhaps it's best if fires more often & is slower to overheat, even if it doesn't hit quite as hard as it once did.

Overall been having a really fun time with the Cormorant - definitely recommend it. Now just hoping the Split DLC will have something similar (planning to start a fresh game when that comes out) - something akin to the old X2 Iguana would be absolutely fantastic.

SCA go hostile when you pick up cargo they made jettison via their hacking (or threats)? That would be pretty cool.

Well, SCA shoots NPC ship which drops cargo. I pick it up.
SCA (still lurking around) spots that cargo in my hold, insists I drop it &, when I ignore their demands, they turn hostile.
May not be specifically coded that they get angry when someone nabs 'their' loot, but the overall effect is the same.
