Yes, hopefully, they are gone now. They didn't suit X at all. I'd rather have more maxi game, thank you very much. And having to mod them all out is so tedious. :P

This is hilariously wrong.

Egosoft can aim for what they think is X4 but the consumers decide whether or not they hit that mark.

In the same way that X:R was billed as the 'next' X series game, almost no one bought it post-launch. I think as a community, we have stopped trusting EGO when they make claims like that. This is why we are all asking very specific questions during the stream.

It looks as if in their quest for more ships with interiors they reduced uniqueness of designs quite a bit. Inevitable i guess, unfortunate as it is... i love the original X3R ship designs - they look like someone designed them and didnt just cobble them together with some simple blocks and chamfered them a few times..

I just hope they are going to reduce the amount of primary colors and general color variety per ship, because right now it really looks as if some kid grabbed into his lego crate to build it, no matter the color.

Pretty sure it is egosoft that determines what is 'X4' and what is 'X Rebirth 2'.

Please tell me what would constitute what you consider to be 'X4' ?

What is your criticism exactly? I can't understand any of you who are saying this because I find it to be absolutely ridiculous.
To be fair, it's like Bernd said. The older X games had just gotten too bogged down with features that were added on that it became difficult to support. Part of the reason X Rebirth happened was so they could have a fresh start. In that respect it makes sense that this game would feel (at least on the surface) closer to X Rebirth.

That's not necessarily a bad thing though. X Rebirth really did serve it's purpose and should be a great platform for future enhancements. I'm hoping at least some of those new flyable ships will have a rear turret like the old novas though, or let you fire all guns at the same time (but drain your weapon energy super fast - like firing 4 PACs or HEPTs together).

At any (fire) rate ;) the ships need to actually have some variety instead of just being cosmetically different. depending on their stats and load-outs we should see something roughly equivalent to m5s (scouts), m4s (interceptors), m3s/m3+ (heavy fighters) and so on. As long as that variety is there I think the older fans of the series will be happy and comments like Stars_InTheirEyes's will eventually die out.

Looking forward to 2018!

Gotta admit that I found the design of the nova very.... underwhelming, odd even. I assume the larger ship we see later is the cerberus, which also looks a bit generic. They arnt designs im going to fall in love with and I felt the same about most ships in XR too really. I'm hoping its just because it's wip, although beating the X3R designs is a tall order. They are some of the most memorable ships in games/sci-fi imho, the disco and barracuda have always been my faves. And hello KJ :D

That is currently not planned. If any good gameplay reasons for this feature appear, this decision can be changed.
It is not necessary to have a reason. It can be just an alternative way to do something. Not mentioning greedy players, or those who pilot an unique ship and do not want to loose it because he flied too far away, or being in some dead-end situation, or cant pay for repair right now, or greedy, or very greedy.

To recall, X3 had direct control, menu>click>done in 1 second, but I expect some elements will stay changed as in rebirth, like selling/buying, when a virtual emulation of trading (fake unloading/loading goods) takes a place which eats time.

Two concepts is getting married, as previously noticed. Subject: future is bright, but without hype.
Oh, I just hope a keyboard (a thing with buttons) is still considered an input device. Controlling everything with keyboard is faster when you've played over hours.

My opinion, after watching this stream for X4, and the Star Citizen Gamescom presentation, I am more optimistic and excited about X4. By a long shot.

How do you rename a ship using nothing but a controller? (Alternatively, how do you use a keyboard on a PC while wearing a VR headset?)

...

Honestly, I think that trying to make a game series like X a general-public product was at the core of the X-R launch debacle. Maybe Egosoft even submitted the game for distribution on console platforms but got denied access due to the many issues X-R had at the time.

Whether Egosoft is trying to get more players to buy their games or not, I'm afraid 4X games are forever destined to address only niche audiences (most people just want to get distracted from reality for 30 mins to an hour; see CandyCrush/your latest twitch game).

To Egosft : the X series is by far the most unique experience I've come across since the NES days, not to mention the most inspiring. So please don't steer off the course you've laid for yourselves and your customers. But reality being what it is, even that might not be possible...

Still, hang tight, hang true. We'll be here with our wallets ready, it'll just be harder to convince us this time.

Godspeed,
LPA

Edit : typo
How do you type anything on a console (or Vita for that matter)? - By using the on screen virtual keyboard, which i also happen to have just used to type out this reply and which i often use to type/enter much longer messages...

Really a console like or maybe more so in particular, the PS4, can do all of the gaming related things a PC can do, and 95% of the multimedia things they can do, the latter perhaps just a little slower, if at all.

(One of the only ways the PS4 is more limited for internet applications than a PC is, is only due to its' nature as a primary gaming device, in that the system dedicates most of its' memory to gaming related tasks, leaving little for multimedia tasks.

For example, i often type out either relatively long posts or take quite a while researching what i want to type and in that time forums like this one like to sign you out if you've been "idle" for too long (even if you've been writing a book in your message...) .
Of course, if you've timed out, most sites won't just let you re-sign in while leaving you on the text entry page with all you want to say left intact, on a PC this isn't really a problem due to their not having any reasonable limit on how much you can copy and paste, however while the PS4 and other consoles are perfectly able to copy and paste things, (as i recently found out pretty painfully while typing out a long message on the Elite Dangerous forums) the system can only copy about three or four paragraphs of text before it runs out of such memory, meaning that you can lose a lot of text if you forget/don't realise this.

In practice it means that if i'm planning to post any messages of any decent length that i usually type and post my opening paragraph in a message with "More to follow" posted at the bottom of it while i edit in all i want to say several times, adding about a paragraph at a time... :) .)

But still for gaming related tasks, i haven't seen a PC do ANYTHING a PS4 or similar system can't do, as well or better... :) .

After seeing incredible Star Citizen gamescom presentation/demo and X4 a day after that I'm more than happy about the situation of space genre these days.
X4 looked very promising to me and all I need is Linux support. I was pleased to hear that with X4 the series is leaning more and more towards simulated living breathing universe.

As a big fan of crowdfunding and Early Access I think it would be great to have the game on Steam EA. Lots of public testing and valuable feedback from testers can't be a bad thing.

Joystick support

Post by Nosscar »

I have 1439 hrs in x-rebirth, which mainly supported xbox pad and keyboard, i could get my x52 to work, although this was not ideal and conflicted with the xbox controls in many ways.

for those of us that do like to use a joystick\flight stick, will this be fully supported.

i am liking the feature set so far, i just hope that the game is fully tested and bug free on release, i would like to see an early access release, and i hope there is a big push on optimization to get good frame rates for the mid tier rigs.

I now own the gtx 1060, 6gb vram, but my fx6300 cpu always lets it down a little, but i am hoping x4 will run better than x-rebirth did.

Not only that, the potential of the new Map/UI stands to fix a real problem with the X Trilogy with a real solution and launch it to a new level of gameplay. I'm happy for all X Universe players and space sim fans because this is innovation in the genre not covered by the other developers.

Overall the presentation and stream spoke to fans and those interested in X Universe in an open and friendly manner, I think it was well received, well attended (I certainly enjoyed it).

I loved how Owen ordered a ship to fly somewhere and you could actually see how it undocked and flew away. Very immersive :)
Also this RTS like map is fantastic.

Comparing this presentation with the one from XRebirth you can really tell the difference how instead of them showing lots of "pew pew pew - explosions - nice graphics - the end" to "in depth trading, empire management and gameplay".
I feel legitimatly hyped right now.

I am only worried about bad performance and bugs at release.

Thanks egosoft for your truly enormous effort to keep satisfied your followers since X-btf.
X4 Foundations, seems to be a worthy continuation of the previous trilogy.
Keep it up and your followers, not only the "old ones" but the new as well will never leave you.

A question though, if it possible to be answered at this early stage of the game.

What the PC requirements will be. Not the minimum ones.

I'm optimistic that since X4 uses similar tech to Rebirth, it won't be hamstrung as severely by technical problems at release.

I'm glad it's not Rebirth, but I'm also glad it's taking some new approaches rather than trying to carbon copy X3, which is a fantastic game that I'll always be happy to go back to. Anyway thanks for a great presentation guys, X4 is looking good and I'm excited to see what you will do with it.

Hey all,

I'm actually very encouraged by what I've seen during the presentation and am possibly experiencing the first tingles of potential future excitement :)

One thing I would like clarity on though, if it's at all possible, is ship customisation. As we can fly every ship, I'd imagine we'll have similar shield and engine options like the Skunk has now. Additionally, I expect we'll have many fixed - front firing - weapon options, again as the Skunk does now.

My question though is what about the ships with turrets, something the Skunk does not have, but Capital ships do in X Rebirth. Capital ships in X Rebirth were touted as being "customisable" just as X4's ships are now. However, we all know there was no customisation other than fit it, or not. I.e. you either choose to install a turret / other surface element or the slot remained empty.

What I really hope X4 does here is allow for true customisation. I.e. if a ship has for example a "small" turret slot, all small turret class weapons could potentially be fitted, perhaps subject to some race tech limitations. Basically, how X3 did it. I liked X3 :)

For me, being able to make a given ship fit into a variety of roles is a huge part of the fun - something X3 and those before it had, but X Rebirth did not. I'd like to have the choice of fitting rapid-fire anti-fighter weapons in my turrets, such as the HIT/MA, or the heavier Plasma weapon or even a missile of some kind.

So, the question is are turrets truly customisable or is it like X Rebirth in that we either choose to populate the turret or we don't.

This might seem a relatively small thing for me to focus on considering all the excellent changes from X Rebirth (the Map, soooo much better) however, the total lack of true customisation on my larger ships was a disappointment. I could not customise my Capital ships for different roles as the early pre-release information suggested.

On another note: There was mention of some sort of early access. I think this might be a good idea considering the mess X Rebirth was in at launch, despite - one assumes - an intensive closed beta. How Egosoft choose to go about this is, of course, up to them. They could open the game up as a true early-access title or follow a similar model to the DLC testing which provided good feedback and allowed for testing on a much wider range of hardware. Personally, I'd be leaning towards the latter option.

Scoob.

well, in the combat footage, there's notably non-matching turrets equipped by many of the ships, and the ways the turrets are placed certainly look modular as opposed to predetermined. They looked to me like there were a lot of unfinished turret assets though so its unsurprising they didnt show off any kind of customization.

edit:

ie, seemingly non-matching turrets in this screencap

I am a fan of the x3 trilogy. played for many years, and still loving :)
didnt played the x-rebirt, when i saw the trailer and the critics, was very dissapoitting.

hope this x4, will be more like x3, with old mecanic, and of course with this merge of art and new improvements.

As many already said, i am moderate optimistic.

however, good work Egosoft on trying to bring the wishes of many x3 followers to this new x4.

yea i agree this looks to have taken the best features that defined this series
and gave it the x-rebirth polish it looks to be a great combination to restore my faith in a once great series
Been a huge X-series fan for nearly 20 yrs going back to beyond the frontier - felt disappointed in the direction egosoft took with rebirth but hoping x4 shines aswell as the x3 trilogy
