I'm in a similar position to the OP, except I have the game but uninstalled it to save on SSD space and now I'm waiting for a point where it's worth the bandwidth to download it again.

It's the sandbox late game with a huge trade enterprise and a war fleet to protect (and perhaps expand) it that's kept me in the series for years. It doesn't sound like that's quite there yet in XR so I think I'll stick with AP for now but it's encouraging to hear things are progressing and maybe even a new game.
Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!
