Yes you can do that, but in a game like Rebirth the player is going to be one of the mayor sinks for the economy, true that it may not be the case at the beginning, but it will be by mid/later game, so the player should be able to expend their money freely, and ships, weapons and drones should be available for purchase.

That only really happens once Omicron Lyrie opens up, though.
