They should change the title from "X Rebirth Tools" to "X Rebirth Extraction Tool" (which we already have anyway). A manual is not a "tool" per se.

This announcement of a tool that already exists has pretty much dealt a death blow to the prospects of ever modding this game. It is now finally clear that Egosoft has no intention of providing additional real tools for the modding community.

I did read the announcement! , but pie in the sky "later" doesn't cut it given the lackluster/non-existent modding support we've seen thus far.

It is not new, but there is not much there last time I checked.

I'm taking the lack of tools as a good sign. It's possible Ego doesn't want to give us any more tools because they are changing the way things don't work. Once they've untangled the mess they created, they will give us a way to take the ball from there. At that point, we may see some of the more talented modders returning.

"X Rebirth Tools" is about 3rd entry from the bottom of the list window on my system.

I'm re-extracting the whole game because of 2.0 and I want it to be clean.

That's :
- select X Rebirth in Steam as a root folder
- select "new" in the diff box
- click on import catalog, select #1
- wait for the list to open
- tick "keep folder hierarchy"
- click on import catalog, select #2
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #3
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #4
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #5
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #6
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #7
- wait for the list to open
- click on import catalog, select #8
- wait for the list to open
- click on extract all
- select a new output folder
- wait (1 hour).
Done.

An easier way of extracting all cat/dat files would be to create a .bat file with the following content:

XRCatTool.exe -in 01.cat 02.cat 03.cat 04.cat 05.cat 06.cat 07.cat 08.cat -out "..\X Rebirth_unpacked"

Provided the XRCatTool.exe and the created .bat file are in the X Rebirth folder, clicking on the bat file automatically extracts the contexts of all catalog files to the folder "..\X Rebirth_unpacked". The specified folder must exist already and can of course be replaced by any other folder as well.


(To create a .bat file, simply create a new .txt file, enter the mentioned content, save it and change the file ending to bat afterwards.)

In fact, a simple solution made by stk25 already exists since day-3

Simply paste the provided *.exe into your X Rebirth folder and execute it. It will extract the game cat/dat files in another folder, next to the packed one.
