Whether you buy the game or not is up to you I would suggest. However, it is my view that the game is presently salvageable and I simply suggest that the post-launch dissapointment energy is redirected to that end - either through modding, or lobbying egosoft to fix what they got wrong.
I think I am precisely doing the latter by posting on these forums. As for modding: I mod games that I like to make them better. Modding is an occasional hobby of mine, not a full time job - I can't do the job of the devs.

It is either that or watching the series fail, frankly.
So you say I must buy it for the good of the series?

Now as to the direction of the redesign - you are viewing it from a functionality perspective, not a development perspective. From a functionality perspective, it is clear there is far less interaction in this game.
But I suspect that we need to understand the redesign Egosoft had to undertake for this reason; Egosoft had to start again, from the ground up. That's not easy.
No, but neither does it mean they lost their entire experience with space sim games.

It is not so much that they wished to remove the ability to control fleets, freighters, trade etc from all corners of the universe - it is that they simply didn't have the resources to reimplement the huge database of work that had gone into the previous games on this front.
Except Bernd has stated that the removed them because it didn't fit with their vision of a game, that vision being an Xbox game. They didn't run out of resources, they decided that controller compatibility is more important than ship commands. A clear design decision that they are on the record for.

X Rebirth I think can surpass the earlier games, but it needs time. It needs modders. It needs scripts and new commands and new assets and a new UI.
What you are saying is that the engine could carry a different, better game. Which is true, but requires developing a completely new game. We won't be seeing that in months, it will take years.

Certainly Egosoft should have done a much better job. But they haven't, or couldn't. What we are left with is a choice - take this flawed product on board, or abandon it entirely - which will likely split the series.
I would suggest the way forward is to await the mod tools and see if this mess can't be repaired, with or without the devs.
But again: If I don't have the option to buy the game with the caveat attached that my money should go into developing the game I want. I can only give DeepSilver/Egosoft my money as a carte blanche: They can do whatever they want with it.
If I could donate 50$ to the modding community in some form of Kickstarter to completely remake the game, then sure. But that's not an option I have currently.
